I’ve been running those book fairs since 2008 and some things have remained staples: the erasers that look like smart phones and the ones that look like Xbox controllers. Also, the “Spy” (uv light) pens are ever-popular as well as finger pointers, like primary classroom teachers use with reading charts, Word Walls and such. The only thing that changes about those things are the colors. For example, we are always given 4 different color variations of the uv light pens, usually black, white, and two others. The prices have remained pretty much the same until very recently. I now have former students coming back as teachers. One asked about the “smelly” erasers. I had totally forgotten about them. They really smelled good. Oh, the chocolate calculators have always been around though. Their scent really lasts for a very long time! And yeah, books. We do sell books.

@@luigi7834 Dog Man and Cat Kid Comic Club. If you don’t know what those are, they are the graphic novel spin-offs of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. Those are the most popular. Oh, and Jory John is popular with the K-3 set. He has a series of picture books that are good for learning about emotions and attitudes and such without being preachy. The OG is called “The Bad Seed.” For chapter books, historical fiction / adventure books are popular, like the “I Survived” series by Lauren Tarshis. But mostly graphic novels are super popular. For girls, anything by Raina Telgemeier is popular.

Funny that you say that because when ever the scholastic book fair happened one or two men wearing clown masks and other wired shit would arrive in a giant tricycle covered in weird shit, You would see them at local fairs very occasionally. they would ride around the school Neighborhood, park their trike at the front of the school and would drive off after a few days, about just under a week felt like a fair. the tricycle terrified the shit out of me as a kid, it had a fake Decapitated head on the front of it. the book fair was cool Though lots of good memories there with friends.

Sameeeeeee. We werent that poor but my mom NEVER gave me any money for school, not for the book fair or to buy snacks, and when the book fair came around I would always see my friends buy stuff and I was just standing there. Mind you, it hurts even more because I was a nerd. From 1st grade to 6th grade, my lunch periods consisted of going to the library and reading (more like devouring) a book every day. So you can imagine, the book fair with cool new books that I couldn't buy. I swore to myself that if I had the disposable income and my kids liked reading, I would never do this to them. It was a HORRIBLE feeling.

At my school we had used book fairs. They weren’t scholastic. Like every Christmas people would donate books and then we could go around and buy beaten up books (they were never in good condition, it was like buying old public library books) for more money than a new one would cost! I don’t know if scholastic did book fairs here in Ireland, but if they did we didn’t get them.

I stole one of those pens that retracted when you folded them in half in the fourth grade and some girl found out and tattled on me but the librarian was like "oh no I remember you paying for it, cause you did right?." That's the most guilt I've ever felt in my life and had she not been so gracious it probably would have been the start of a light criminal streak. That's why the first part of Les Miserables will always make me cry. Sometimes just giving somebody the silver will cost you nothing and will mean for them everything.

You brought me back, I remember girls being just the scum of the earth in elementary school. They got joy out of telling on ya, they didn't like anything that was cool, and they acted like they were made of glass (break out crying from the lightest push). I think it mostly stopped after maybe 3rd or 4th grade, but before that they were basically unlikable, moving land mines.

Me being a naive child, optimistically approached the librarian (who was hosting the book fair) and asked her what books I could buy with a dollar. She escorted me to the sucky five page book section and she said they were all a dollar. I left empty-handed and disappointed.

I was the nerdy kid during the book fair that actually liked looking at all the books, and going to the book fair in middle school was how I found one of my favorite book series to this date, and 2.) The scholastic catalog nostalgia made me remember I BEGGED my mom to buy me Dora Adventure to the Purple Planet for the GameCube as a kid, because “it was educational”
