Thank you for watching! Since this is strictly a deadbolt lock with electronic controls, there is no way for it to physically close the door and then lock. However, depending on the door you install it on, there may be options for spring hinges or hydraulic closers which would close and latch the door every time it is opened.

Is there a way to change the hand of this lock? I have a left handed door (when looking from the outside) and I can't figure out a way to make it work.

The built in alarm was only included on the Sense and Connect (BE479 and BE468). As to its function on those models, it will sound if there are more than 3 incorrect code attempts, or if it senses impact against the bolt. A decent feature in a lock, but I believe it wouldn’t taken up too much room in the Encode for it to be practical.

My encode deadbolt lock no longer locks (after a couple years of working fine). I get 3 blinking sets from the red lock button on the bottom right. I've changed batteries and also reset to factory settings numerous times, however the issue persists. I'm only able to lock it by manually turning the deadbolt.

I would contact Schlage customer support. They are very good at warranting their products and have a pretty quick turnaround time.

So i have a dumb question, but is there anything in the schlage series that is like the encode, but as a handle set instead of a deadbolt? I really want this, but I would rather have it as a handle set instead of a deadbolt... is there anything with these same features, like that?

As of right now, unless you get into the commercial access control lines, Schlage doesn’t offer any lever sets like this. The new J series is supposed to be coming out with connected versions (Bluetooth and WiFi I think) and they have levers and deadbolts. But I’m not sure why you would want an electronic lever if you still have a regular keyed deadbolt? The setup I always recommend and use is the electronic deadbolt with a passage function lever or knob. That way you never accidentally lock yourself out :)

@@LockPickingPatrolman all i had was a locking knob and no deadbolt. So I went to home depot yesterday and got the vertical handle with the push button/ lever and was gonna get the encode for a deadbolt. But they were out of the encode, so I'm not too happy right now... but this style handle doesn't have a lock, so I had to drill out the door and install a deadbolt anyway... I was hoping to not have to but still get the functionality of the encode...

@@Phred_Phlintstoner yeah everyone has been out of the encode. But it uses the standard deadbolt prep so you’ll be good there. As for the handle set you bought and installed, there are no locking versions of those even with just a key. But I’ve done several installs with encodes and handle sets so you’ll be good there!

I bought that handle set, brought it home, put it on, and it just doesn't look straight... it's like the bottom piece got bent or twisted slightly... as far as the deadbolt went though, I don't have any jigs here, and the locksmith I've been trying to train with just had his wife pass away, so I didn't want to bother him for his, thus my hesitation for installing a deadbolt. But I bought the only jig they had at home depot (the ryobi wood door jig) and that was a total piece of garbage... the gf buys ryobi everything, so I hoped the hole saw that came with it would atleast help... but yeah I don't recommend that jig to anyone... I mean I know it wasn't really intended for use on a metal covered wood door, but I really would have been better off mapping everything out with masking tape, a compass, and ruler... honestly if I wasn't already planning on replacing the door already anyway, I'd be pretty upset with how everything is turning out so far. But both the front door and back door need to be replaced eventually here anyway. And next time I'm using work tools regardless. Lol 😆 🤣 😂

The bottom post backset is usually the same as the cylindrical prep (2 3/8” for residential). A good jig makes all the difference in the world! After using the Pro Loc jigs at work, I wouldn’t buy anything else if I were going to use it more than once.

Hi, thanks for this video. Months after setting my lock up, and it working just fine, I noticed my WiFi settings in the app are now blank. Is this normal? Or have I gotten disconnected? It looks like it’s connected, and I can even see the battery level on the lock. I am currently out of state from my lock, so I can’t seem to reconnect it. I was trying to add a new code but it gave me an error msg; this is why I’m writing this. Seeking help.

Being out of state from the lock can present some challenges in trying to diagnose any problems. If it’s possible to have someone at the lock to change the batteries, that’s where I would start. Fresh Duracell batteries, no Amazon or dollar store ones either. Also, if you’ve changed any WiFi equipment at the house it could’ve effected it. When you get back to the lock, you can do a factory reset of it. Make sure you have the factory codes handy (usually on a label under the battery cover). If this still doesn’t resolve your issues, call Schlage tech support and they will most likely walk you through these same steps, plus a few more tests.

If I have a rental property and I use this on the door, do I have to give tenant the program code? or will the user code be sufficient?

I would not give the tenants the programming code. Instead, I would ask them what they would like their code to be and then program it in the Schlage Home app.

@@LockPickingPatrolman thanks you’re correct. So I figured not to give tenants the factory default program code. Schlage has a feature to change to a new program code. Which I can give to the tenant. This way they will be able to have access to the mobile app, all it’s features. Once they move out, I can reset back to default factory code. And repeat the process for the next tenant.

Can the codes be added from a 1000 miles away remotely? Also, what if the wifi connection goes out due to a storm?

As long as the lock is connected to WiFi, you should be able to manage any function of the lock from anywhere you have internet access. If the WiFi connection at the lock goes out, the lock will automatically attempt to reconnect. Also if the WiFi name or password is changed, the lock will need to have that information updated as well

Can we PAIR more then one cellphone (like husband & wife) into one locker ???

Just have the homeowners download and set up an account in the app. Then they can add the locks to it and have control of the lock.

If you Google “Schlage BE489 factory reset” it will give you the steps to follow. Once an Encode has been reset to factory, you’ll be able to set it up on a new account.

The most common reason I’ve seen for firmware update issues is that the WiFi is a little spotty at the lock. I would try opening the door (so it is closer inside to the WiFi) and also putting in a fresh set of Duracell batteries. Also on rare occasions, the OS of your device can make a difference. If you’re using an iOS device, perhaps try and android if you have one available.

The stock key cylinder that comes with the Encode is the standard Schlage 5 pin residential type. Typically those have 2-3 spooled driver pins, and can be a pain to pick. You can swap out the factory cylinders with pretty much any other standard KiK style cylinder however.

You need to make sure you use the same tail piece or it won’t work with another cylinder

I just got this lock and setup all the users in the house with codes. My question is how can the rest of the family use their phone to lock or unlock

When you go to the access codes screen, on the bottom right should be an option that says virtual key (or something similar). Tap on that and it will walk you through the setup. Each family member will need to set up their own Schlage app account to use the app, but as you know it’s straight forward

I've tried a thousand times absolutely no matter what I do after I scan the QR code on the back of the lock it asked me to press the button and release it and nothing happens My lock has to be dead I mean broken the batteries are fine

I would definitely contact Schlage customer service for troubleshooting. It sounds like they will probably warranty it for you.

Will not connect to wifi. I've done everything like hide the 5mhz. Nothing works. Even Schlage can't help. Total waste of money.

Schlage should warranty it for you. They’re usually pretty good about doing that. If the customer service rep isn’t helpful, try a local locksmith (preferably one with a storefront) and see if they can contact their Allegion rep for some help. I imagine they probably did walk you through this, but did you do a factory reset?

@@LockPickingPatrolman oh yes, many times. Its now "Door 12" on my app as I've reset it and tried setting it up so many times. I have fiber internet, everything else connects perfectly (ring doorbells, thermostat, smart TVs, etc). It pairs fine, but won't connect. This is the second one I've received. They determined my first one was faulty and this was the replacement lock. Does the same thing. Took it to a different property, same story, won't connect.

@@hfug8 that’s really weird, but I’ve seen it happen. Do you use an iPhone or android? The one that I saw act similar to this was set up using iPhone and iPad but did what you’re describing. My boss used his android to log in to the customers account, and set up the lock just fine. Then the customer logged in from his iPhone and it worked perfectly

Their app is awful! It doesnt respond and gives me a bunch of errors and when I restart my phone and reopen the app all the updates I made reflect, such as unlocking doors and programming unique codes. I'm not sure if it has to do with my vacation rental being 4 hours away from me in the mountains or what.
