Schilke Mouthpieces 1930's to 1960's and beyond......

Brass Mouthpieces & Mutes
Episode 2.
Schilke (Early) Mouthpieces
Did you know Schilke started making mouthpieces as early as the late 1930's?
I show you my own small collection of E. Lewelynn Personal Models, Schilke Alpha Numeric and some fabled Laskey (Herseth) Rims.
Get yourself a nice beverage and sit back as I walk you through some examples from 3+ decades.
Note: I say refer to alpha numeric in the video - what I meant to say was Alphabet (slight brain slip there...)

I had never played a Schilke mouthpiece until three days ago. It's a 15A4, and I absolutely love it.

That's a REALLY groovy collection there...If I were you, I'd send some of those to the Schilke shop to have them make copies of those early models as a comparison to current versions. Here's a lil' model history: models 24, 22, 20 & 18 were all formerly models "R" for Renold Schilke, they were his personal models and he'd use them with a Delrin (plastic) rim, #24 throats & Schmidt backbores. Model 20D2d was a copy of Georges Mager's European model, model 18C3d was a copy of a piece Herbert L Clarke used, 17C4 was made for Thomas Stevens and was basically a Bach 1c with a wider/flatter rim, the 17C2 was a copy of Thomas Stevens Mt. Vernon Bach 1c, the 17 was a copy of Will Scarlett's Bach 1c, the 14C2 a copy of William Vaccichion's modified NY Bach 1 1/ 4 c, the 14 is a copy of a NY Bach 1 1/4 c, the 14A4 was Allen Vizzutti's model he used while attending Eastmen school of Music in the early '70's, the 14A4a was initially made for Forrest Buchtel in 1970 when he was playing lead on the Woody Herman band, the 13B was made for Frank Lisanti, a Chicago-based trumpeter/teacher, the 13A4a was made for Mike Vax in 1970 when he was playing on Kenton's band, the 12 was made for Joe Summerhill, another Chiacgo-based artists from the 1950's, the 11 model was a copy of Bud Herseth;s NY Bach 1B, the 11A was a copy of an old Bach 7E, the 10A4a I think was made for either Lloyd Michaels or Frank Minear, the 9 was Edward B Lewellyn's piece, the 7B4 was a copy of a piece used by Murray Klopovsky(sp) and the 6A4a was made for Chase, though the model sold to the public is NOTHING like the original design-I have one and had Schilke copy it to make ava to the public finally

I have a couple of the Laskey copies of the Herseth rim also. They came from a National Opera Principal player who retired and I bought his collection.

Ok, watching the clip, the first piece was a model B, currently model 9, with the K (7B4) rim...the second piece was a model S (for Thomas Stevens)...the "J" model is current 12 model..that model "P" is a mystery...don't think it stood for Piccolo but I'd like to know the dimensions of that one...or have Schilke copy it to compare to other models...interesting...the model with the 1172 backbore was indeed made by Scott Laskey and that was HIS backbore design he used on ALL his custom/stock pieces

I have Schilke mouthpiece that I was told that it is a piccolo mouthpiece. I think it is a cornet mouthpiece. It says Schilke 22b

The "B" model (currently the 9 model) was a copy of Edward B Lewellyn's piece-basically close to a Bach 10 1/2 c...all models with the letter "R" indicates Renold Schilke...the K rim was for Murray Klopovsky(sp?)...the "J" model (now the 12 model) was for Joe Summerhill, a Chicago-based artist back in the '50's. Let me know if you'd ever sell the personal Lewellyn or either the "B model

Hi Paul, sorry you'd have to be a little more specific. Chet played a number of horns and mpcs during his career. Best bet for vintage mpcs would be Josh Landress Brass or Austin Custom Brass Both are top operators. There is also a couple of specialist stores in Tokyo that has unbelievable collections too. All the best with your hunt.

@@thebrasscellar those Tokyo sellers are total scalpers! They do have a few really amazing finds, which they no doubt bought for 1/4 or less than what they’re charging now!
