I need more buzz in my life........

Brass Mouthpieces & Mutes
Episode 3
Harmon Mute Comparison
Never fear - the horn introductions will return again soon.
In the meantime there is this little video which compares my originally purchased Jo-Ral Bubble mute from the mid 90's (NB: it is modified a bit - and I explain that) and an Original 1930's-40's Harmon Mute from Chicago which came from Smith Mute Restorations (link below).
Which do you prefer and why?

Thanks for checking out the video. I too like the Harmon sound quite a bit. As for teaching - haven't done any of that in quite some time. If I get a chance it might make for an interesting video though.

I was gonna say that's the theme to Cinema Paradiso, but I scrolled down and saw it was a Chris Botti song... (wink) Great romantic movie, one of my top 5 ever faves. That's a mellow trumpet? I would like to see a shallow mouthpiece, bright laser trumpet comparison with the mutes vs this vid.

Great video, love the comparison there i think the harmon sounds a little fuller, which i prefer. I just bought a new harmon and Im looking into ways to give it more of that buzz, would you recommend making the dents, and does the loosening of the top part also work on the harmon?

Not sure I recommend anyone to modify their brand new Harmon - but if the seam is loosened it should rattle more - thus creating more buzz. It's pretty much a one way street here as putting it back if you don't like it is difficult. Proceed with caution and small adjustments each time if you do.

How exactly do I loosen the seam?

Does anyone know how to adjust the stem on a vintage tin harmon mute? My stem is too loose and falls out easily. I would like it to stay in and be adjustable without it falling out.

    1) Needle nose pliers are needed to close up (a little) the entry hole on the mute, you have to do this from the large opening on the mute, pinch and rotate, with the stem in. 2) A less drastic or invasive way is to put some tape on the stem - obviously use something that is waterproof.

Indeed. Been following him for about ten years now. My personal CD collection : Chris Botti, Bobby Shew, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Clifford Brown, Chet Baker and Miles Davis and Kenny Dorham - likely 90% of my collection in those few players.

The 30's Harmon, no doubt about it. The Jo Ral is much brighter. Too bright for your Committee.

Hi David. Yes, I tend to agree with you - listening back the 30's Harmon is my preference also. Thanks for checking out the vid!
