Saying goodbye to my Ridgeline, and hello to something that angers truck people more!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I knew this day would come. When I first bought my Ridgeline in 2017, I was just driving around and carrying bikes. That changed.
Now at 85k miles, after years of trips to the stone yard, the torque converter is on its last legs. I could replace it for $5000. That would be worth it, but I'd go right back to towing stone at 45 degree angles.
So I need something that can tow more for the short distances I travel (Berm Park, the stone yard, Lowes) and I want something fun for once. I also need a vehicle that the truck crowd will hate as much as the Ridgeline, and I'm pretty sure I found it!
Depending on what filter bubble you live in, the Lighting either gets 1,000 miles of range, or about 15. The battery will also fail after 1 year, or after 2,000,000 miles. It also costs either $150,000 or $25,000. It turns out that the truth is more nuanced, and so I'll give you the lowdown after driving it for a year or so.

    People that actually do serious work and play usually get a van. Does virtually everything better than a truck in most cases. The reason pickups first got popular decades ago, was because American farmers were always hauling around animal poop or things covered in it or bulky and dirty industrial equipment, which isn't very pleasant with a van. Americans, rarely, if ever, do this kind of hauling anymore. Trucks are sold now at $50k-$100k because of fragile masculinity and posturing in 90% of cases. The Ridgeline seems like a pointless vehicle, because it is a slightly less pointless spinoff of pickups, which are incredibly pointless excess for the vast majority of their owners. I'd like to see how many American pickups have ever hauled 75% of bed or trailer payload, it's probably something like 5%.

I researched it and found it could be one of 300 things, most of which were expensive. It happened a second time while driving about 80 mph through some hills. That's when I decided it really wasn't truck I needed for my heavy foot. I traded it for an F-150 on the last day of 2016. I love the F-150. Zero issues. Be interesting to see how you feel about after 6+ months. I haven't heard much positive about that F150. I think for being around town, you will be fine. Just don't tow a camping trailer with it and expect to get far with it. I have an EV car and they are great for commuting and running errands. Long distance and/or cold winters, not so much.

    @Charlie Sipple I just haven't read or heard much positive about this particular model (EV model). From what I've read, doesn't work well as a work truck and especially towing. I don't have personal experience with this particular model truck, so he may have a great experience with it if he is just using it around town. I think my EV car works great for commuting and getting around town. Just not great for long distance or the cold winters where I'm at.

  • @ChuckThree

    @ChuckThree

    Жыл бұрын

    @@chameleonpogono fair enough, you did say “that F-150”. But the fact of the matter is no EV is going to tow well. Even standard 1/2 ton trucks (aka 1500s) lose about 50% of mpg when towing. Factor that into the efficiency drop a standard EV sees at highway speeds. Plus most half-ton/1500 truck drivers town a handful of times a year max, if at all. And most of the time in short trips. Thankfully, because towing on the interstate is way more dangerous than most people doing it know. Depending on what state you’re in and how far you typically commute, these electric mid-size trucks are perfect. Most contractor or work trucks work in a 50-150 miles radius, need a high payload capacity, need a durable be and decently high ground clearance.

    Nice truck! Just keep in mind that you're still going to be highly limited in towing and hauling, just in a different way. Based on testing from various sources, you're likely to only see 110ish miles of range depending on the weight of the tow/haul.

    I for one am glad this is the direction you went. I work in landscaping, and I recently asked my boss if there's been any discussion among upper management about making the transition towards electric trucks. He and I both seemed to agree that the technology isn't quite there yet for our needs, but it's absolutely the long-term goal for my employer, and it might be sooner rather than later that we introduce one into the fleet to start testing the feasibility of it. I'm not a truck guy, in fact I'm not even a car guy. I'd love to live somewhere where I could rely entirely on public transit and bike lanes and just sell my damn car. But beyond personal use, big trucks do have their place for certain businesses, and I hope that eventually EV technology can serve that role. I'll be very interested to see your long-term review of this as an actual work vehicle, Seth.

    The Rivian and Lightning both seem fine. They're both way too expensive in my opinion but given the costs of even fairly basic work trucks these days they're not outrageously overpriced in comparison, and at that price point I don't think I want to feel like they're just fine.

    I get the lightning purchase, but I think the powerboost (hybrid f150) would have made more sense with your location and at the current moment, with the electrical dilemma. With the powerboost you'd get a more useful truck (bed, towing, generator and mileage on tank) while getting about the same mpg as the ridgeline. Hope the lightning works out though.

    Was really pumped when they announced this. Sadly very few were actually able to order it before they bumped up the MSRP 20k. The pro model was originally announced slightly below 40k. Now the same trim is over 60k. They tried to blame "supply issues" but no other EV's MSRP jumped up 50% so there is more to it than just supply chain issues. Either they purposely lied about the original price to drive up hype or they saw all the dealership markups and figured the market allowed for a much high sale price. Then they saw the new tax breaks and bumped it another 10k. it feels like a bait and switch job. I remember telling family members to wait a few months for ordering to open up only to look stupid when they announced the price hike before opening up orders. I was a big Ford fan and the entire practice has put me off the brand completely.
