Savage 110 Ultralite - 6.5 PRC - Out of the Box Accuracy Test and Review

Garrett tests out the brand new Savage Arms 110 Ultralite chambered in 6.5 PRC - This rifle comes standard with a Proof Research Carbon Wrapped Barrel. Garrett added a Vortex Razor HD LHT 3-15x42 scope and an AREA 419 muzzle brake to it. Overall weight is still less than 8lbs!

Nice work, Garret. For those who dont handload or spend alot of time shooting for group size, there is so much work that goes into it. But the satisfaction of having a great group with ammo you create is well worth it.

Great video. Outstanding. What scope mount did you use? Did Savage say if other rifles had this problem as well? Hopefully this was a one off thing and will never happen again. Trying to decide on this rifle or the Bergara Wilderness B-14. Leaning towards the Savage because of the weight.

Same marks on the hornady factory match and my first reloads with 140 accubonds at the nosler list length 2.955 length won't even chamber. I also get a random scuff on the necks where it's apparently tight.

Thanks for the Video! I have been dying to see the accuracy of that specific rifle/caliber combo. Too bad about the bore issue, but glad it may have affected accuracy, as it seemed to be showing just MOA at best most of the time. I have a $65 223 barrel from Anderson that can do that with the right ammo. I also have the proof 308 barrel, and so far have been dissapointed. I was looking for bugholes, but am getting swiss cheese. My Savage barrel on the 6.5 dicks special is more accurate. I am starting to believe barrels are like women. Only one good one comes along in a great while. Anyway, great post and looking forward to seeing the results after they fix it!

Had a number of defective firearms that had to be send back. Some multiple times. On firearms, seems it doesn't matter what you spend anymore. Quality can be pretty shoddy on things that can't be seen from the outside. In your case, you can be out your money and minus a rifle all during hinting season waiting to get your gun back and maybe they fix it and maybe they don't. Thanks for truthing the whole situation. Personally, my experience with Savage is less than stellar. Hope your's comes back awesome.

I love my savage 10 fcp but I have a similar-ish problem. Happens to be a creed not a PRC but it's super sensitive to case length and buildup in the throat. Not as bad as yours for sure, just similar. I want to rebarrel to something that's not one of the recent Hornady precision cartridges. They are great cartridges, definitely breaking new ground, but I dislike the trend of the super tight throats as a means of accurizing. I dislike getting pressure spikes and fliers in the middle of a session because of a normal amount of buildup. Even David Tubb hates it. Anyway, nice rifle, I'm jealous. Those things are a deal if you get the kinks worked out.

@Reel-Lentless I totally agree it wasn't Savages fault. And yeah 6 weeks may be a quick turn around for some. The thing that got under my skin is that, had I not called them to ask about the status, they wouldn't have called or emailed a single update. They even forgot to send me the tracking number when they said it had shipped. It's not that I wouldnt buy another Savage, I just wouldnt buy it from an Online site so I can inspect the rifle before I purchase it. Other than that Savage is top notch in the warranty department.

I picked one of these up in 300 wsm about 7 months ago. I have tried 5 different premium types of ammunition, but can’t get better than 3-5 inch groups at 100 yards with the gun locked into a shooting vise. I’ve tried putting it into an MDT chassis to see it that would help, but it did not. I do notice that I really have to force the bolt to closed. I’m getting a bad case of buyers remorse at this point as it is the least accurate rifle I own. I have been in contact with proof research and they want me to send it back to Savage as they think there is an issue. I have reached out to them via email a few times but am not having much luck getting an RMA. How did you get ahold of them?

I’m sure the Savage will as well but was disappointed after the measurements. Hopefully shoot it this week. Some factory 147 EDL-M. We will see! Tried to load a Berger 135 Classic Hunter at .020 off the lands, the Savage would not close. Should have measured first. We will see what happens at the range.

Shawn Till I absolutely love it. The eye box is very nice on it. Edge to edge clarity is amazing and the colors really pop. Drie reticle is very sharp and as you can see in the video, plenty powerful enough and a small enough dot to shoot nice groups with without it causing issues covering up your holding point. - Garrett

sorry if you've already answered htis a million times, but how does the 419 hold up on the ultralite 6.5 prc? is it worth it? do you notice a significant difference? and if not what else would you recommend? thanks so much!

  • @ChuckinTV

    @ChuckinTV

I would say it’s a recommend. We don’t have any other options to compare it to, but it works great and is much easier to install than brakes with crush washers. This rifle kicks less than 6.5cm without a brake. Plus it is holding up just fine

Thanks for the review. I will say if you want a light rifle, there are a lot lighter rifles that will kill elk sized game at normal hunting ranges. Not sexy but the .308 in 165 or 180g will kill them dead. I wanted a light easy handling rifle and ended up getting a howa alpine mountain rifle in .308. It’s very accurate and light

Nice video and good work. 6.5 PRC with a high-end barrel should provide better groups than that. With 6.5 Crdmr I've gotten 3/8" groups of 5 shots at 100 yards and 1.5" groups at 350 yards. Maybe after 100 rounds the rifle will settle in and tighten up those groups. Or, maybe a Timney Trigger set at 1.8 - 2.0 lbs will improve things. I'm not a fan of the Savage Accutrigger. "Accu" - it is not.

This trigger is set to 1.3lb actually, lower than a $200 timney and it came with the gun. You must not have watched the same video I did?

Chuckin' it’s a custom savage. So it was on right away. It’s a 6.5 prc built on a long action with a long throat. ADG brass with a 147 eldm with some H1000 makes for a smooth rifle.

That gun should be shooting better than that. Iv got a 110 old 243 I think like 2000s when it was made. 150 yards 5 shot group cover with a small button.
