Savage 110 Desert Tactical - Out of the Box Accuracy Test

In this video I test the out of the box accuracy with the Savage Desert Tactical 6.5 Creedmoor. I tried a large variety of factory and hand loaded ammo to see what this rifle likes. So far I'm very impressed with the new Accu-Fit - Accu-Stock and the overall accuracy with this rifle. I think it represents a huge value with it's features: heavy threaded barrel, adjustable stock, aluminum bedding, adjustable accu-trigger, and 20MOA rail included for less than 700$. I was pretty let down by the ejection problems I had the day before. However, the issue may be solved. I will do an updated review on this rifle after we get more time with it. As always thank you for watching, sharing, and subscribing.

    My boss bought a stealth a few months back. First shot would load but would be a little rough amd gritty. Pop that first round and it would go bang but would not eject on its own. Everytime he'd try to rack in the next round it would hang up everytime going into the chamber and never fully make it. Ended up having to send it back to savage. They had to remove material in a few places on the bolt. Got it back and that thing is super smooth, WAY better than any savage action I've ever messed with. And shoots damn accurate with hornady 120 and 129 gr. I'm wanting another 6.5 and was leaning towards Savage since they have plenty of lefty options. But I hate the thought of having to deal with sending one back and waiting all over again and it seems more people are having some ejection issues.

    The only thing to consider with the Ruger American is that the fore end can flex on you. This Savage has an aluminum chassis that prevents that. The Ruger also has a heavier trigger. Not to talk you out of the Ruger, just some food for thought. What about this video makes you want to go that way?

    To tell you the truth, the initial groups you were getting scared me. Especially with a rifle like that. That thing should be "MOA out of the box". I have a bunch of savage rifles, in almost every caliber. They all shoot MOA with almost every kind of ammo I buy or load.The same goes with all the Ruger American rifles I have, all are under MOA. I agree with you about the Ruger stocks, they are kinda cheap. I'm not too worried about the stock flexing though. More than likely, I will modify them or replace them.

    I got one of these in January soon as they came out. Definitely should come with the Tactical barrel shaped bolt knob. Now they have changed to an AICS magazine too. Mine has been iffy on accuracy, some days a tackdriver and others, not so good. Or is it me having bad days. Also have weak ejection, I hear that crops up on Savages on occasion, they will replace the ejector springs on request. It is a real good looking rifle to me, I want it to work, will keep playing with it. That American Eagle ammo is something else, Also real accurate in my 10BA Stealth. Now I see they aren't making it now, was a "limited issue". Huh? Thankfully 140 ELD's with 4350 will do it too. Like your vids, good work.

    Funny story but the S&B rounds I purchased for my 338 Lapua were also difficult to eject out of my savage and when I went to reload them they would not seat in the shell holder. On the chrono they registered a sick rate of speed at 3362fps on average with a 250 grain bullet with a SD of 60fps which leads me to believe all their rounds are not very accurate in regards to loads. Plus after only being shot once they were all difficult to resize so I ended up throwing all the brass to the side for use only in emergencies.

    Love the videos. Ever since you got that gun I wanted one. I finally purchased one off classic firearms. My question to you is what's your thoughts on carry this for a deer rifle and us the stock ridged. I bought this model for kind of an all around gun. Hunting, targets and just range time. Also some of my other savages have flimsy stocks so I hoping this one is stiffer. I wanted the tactical model but the one I thought I ordered was the fluted barrel I realized I didn't get the fluted barrel but wasn't a deal breaker.

  • @ChuckinTV

    @ChuckinTV

    2 жыл бұрын

    This might be a bit heavy for an all round rifle. However, it is perfect for spots you don't need to carry it too far. I would consider it a perfect open field rifle if you have a spot to stretch the range out 200 yards and beyond. The weight actually helps with staying stable on rests and bipods. These 110s are fully aluminum bedded to the fore end so you won't have to worry about the stock flexing.

I took mine out of the box ran a snake through it and headed to the range... I was all over the place with grouping. Checked action screws and they were loose. If you haven’t already checked it out, you should. My .308 is a consistent .6-.7MOA shooter. It will group my Hornaday 150 FMJ plinking loads at 1MOA or a little over. I’ve been eyeing the 6.5C brother to add to collection. Only problem is I’ve got a Ruger Predator in 6.5 that shoots about the same as the savage 308 and I can’t decide if I’m gonna spend the money on upgrading the stock or buying another rifle. I spent two or three days taking my brand new Savage 110 apart and accuracy and polishing everything I could. That included the entire Action Bolt Oak Ridge Spring and picatinny rail. All stuff down and inspected and lapped if necessary. I left the bar of the barrel of his two different grits. And David Bowie High polish. Broke it in with some TMC about 30 minutes, I think and then started. Shooting gold medal match in .308. The best 3 round group was .33 in. Flawless rejection. Click on my teeny tiny gun channel to see how I did it. I had that Savage working so damn smooth And feeling in shooting like a done four times its cost. It just took. A little TLC in a little bit of research. I even changed the bolt spring pressure And a few other things to bring it more into what that should have come like from the factory. A bunch of stuff. Long somewhat boring 45-minute video on all the things I did. On my gun Channel. I never shot long range precision rifle in my life and shot a .33" group my first time out. Honestly, the rifle did most of the work.

    Im liking this rifle, though I dont own one. Have several other Savage rifles and they are all shooters. The only Creedmoor chambered rifle I have is a Ruger American, but I have a couple 260 Rem rifles. Interestingly I found my rifle really liked the Lehigh Defense Controlled Choas 122gr. Found success with H4350 from 40.0gr to 42.0gr, R15 from 38.0 to 40.0gr, and H Superformance 44.0 to 46.0. All loaded to 2.800". All of these loads produced 3-shot groups of 3/4" or less at 100 yds. To be honest though, this rifle will shoot darn near anything decently. I have to suggest if you are truly looking for accuracy results, lose the bipods and get a good front bull bag for bench work. Way too much bounce in the front for great accuracy, IMO. On a side note, my 260's will not stabilize the LH CC bullets. Different twist rates and bullets yawl in flight. Keyhole the target at 100yds.

After that it would literally cloverleaf pretty much anything u put in it n still consistently shoots sub 1/2" groups. Sometimes how a rifle shoots straight out of the box can be very deceiving about how it will shoot after the barrel has been broke-in.

The first thing i did was drop it in the MDT XRS chassis and then added a Area 419 Sidewinder Muzzle Brake. It wasn't my first choice brake, but it was in stock and i needed it asap. I borrowed a scope off one of my bigger rifles a Vortex Razor HD GEN III 6-36X56 FFP. I shot it at 100 yards to get on paper, then 500 yards to test tracking of the scope, then 1000 yards to check real accuracy. It was shooting sub MOA at 100 yards. The ammo i was shooting was the Hornady 147grain match. Its the only 6.5 prc off the shelf ammo i like. This is a great rifle if you want to build it up a bit. But just off the shelf its a little below average.

    I generally don't let the barrel get hot when I'm testing different ammunition. The reason why is to see how much variance there is between the cold barrel shots and the following warm shots. As a hunter I'm more concerned with the cold barrel shot. That's the one that matters. Sometimes it makes no difference in the point of impact. If the difference between warm barrel and cold barrel isn't noticeable that is a good thing.
