Satisfying Restoration of a Painted Mid-Century Modern Dresser

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

----------
In this makeover, I take a refinished dresser back in time to its original wooden glory.
This dresser was floating around on Facebook Marketplace for weeks before I stumbled across it. The seller had written that it would be perfect for a refinishing project, and that's exactly what I picked it up for. This piece was constructed with 100% solid elm -- even the sides of the drawers -- which is a rare and valuable find, so I had to go with a full wood stain restoration to bring out the beautiful grains. It had been previously chalk painted with some stenciling on the door; the chalk paint was peeling and chipping everywhere, due to a lack of proper prep work on the wood prior to painting. This made it quite easy to just scrape off most of the paint, with some help of a paint stripper.
If you enjoyed this makeover, please like and subscribe to see more. And if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer your comments.
Thank you for watching :)

There's two types of people: the "paint everything" crowd and the "painting over wood is sacrilege" crowd. I'm just happy any time a piece is kept from a landfill for a while longer. If painting it keeps it in use another five years, and then someone buys it and restores it for another five years of use, that's ten years it wasn't in a landfill! This is a beautiful restoration and anyone who loves the natural wood look would be happy to have it in their home ❤

Exactly! Who cares so long as it keeps the piece in use. Plus, watching so many of these videos I’ve learned sometimes wood gets damaged to the point it’ll never be aesthetically pleasing even if it’s still very functional. I myself don’t have the skills to remake and replace those parts. I could manage painting them though. So there’s good reasons to enjoy both styles. I personally like a mix. Just brought my newly painted nightstand into my bedroom tonight! Mine was really beat up, damaged during a few moves. My husband’s was fine. I painted mine and left his. Everyone’s happy and it all still looks great together.

Some pieces it’s sad to see painted but all wood pieces aren’t created equal. Just because something is wood doesn’t mean it’s a quality piece. There are furniture pieces that aren’t well built and it’s not the end of the world if that pine 70’s piece is painted.

From what I can tell, even the repainters agree. It's just that a lot of salvaged furniture isn't real wood, or is just peeled veneer/ doesn't look good raw. When they get real wood, they don't seem to paint it, thankfully.

I love how you repeated the tapered rice grain shape of the new wooden handles that was found in the original handle. Speaking as a former art school student, It really ties everything together and makes the whole piece look more cohesive. I feel like the new piece would look really nice as a hutch for storing plates, cutlery, tablecloths, etc in a dining room

When the shabby chic and farmhouse look was popular I knew it was only a matter of time before people started to undo the hideousness of that awful trend. Nice job, it looks so much better and classier!

I have so much furniture from grandparents that I'm wanting to restore. Not paint, restore. This has inspired me to do it even though it's a big job. I don't have all the fancy equipment but I have enough to do a good job. I didn't know a stain could be so beautiful, thank you.

Thank God the dreadful chalk-paint-everything phenomena is turning, I hope!! I've seen so many great pieces of furniture ruined. It's like the 60s when period features were ripped out of homes and now we're desperately trying to put them back!! Well done you!! I've subscribed!

Yeah, for as much as I love the look of worn out, old furniture, I can never say I've liked chalk painting.

I hate painted furniture. I love seeing the wood restored to its former glow. Beautiful job.

That transition at 2:32 hurt with how perfect it was 😳 I replayed it a few times and it’s so subtle it’s wonderful

I can't believe someone painted out such gorgeous wood. Lovely to see it restored. Just because we can paint stuff, doesn't always mean we should! You did a lovely job. It probably looks better than it did new!

The grain is soooo pretty! I like your homemade handles that replicate the existing metal one! Young man, you are handsome and talented!
