Lyrics:
Now her daddy's in the kitchen - starin' out the window
Scratchin' and a rackin' his brains
How could 18 years just up and walk away
Our little pony-tailed girl grown up to be a woman
Now she's gone in the blink of an eye
She left the suds in the bucket
And the clothes hangin' out on the line
Now don't you wonder what the preacher's gonna preach about Sunday morn
Nothin' quite like this has happened here before
Well he must have been a looker - smooth talkin' son of a gun
For such a grounded girl - to just up and run
Course you can't fence time - and you can't stop love

As fun as this song is and how incredible it sounds, as a dad to two little girls (3 and 7) this song hits me hard in the feels and gets me all misty eyed. My little pony-tailed girls are gonna grow up to be women, and it’s sad to think about 18 years just up and walking away. If anything, this song makes me wanna be a better dad. One that never lets them forget how loved they are, and that they’ll always want to keep a relationship with no matter how far away they go.

The best part about country music is no matter how upbeat and adventurous the music/lyrics can be, one tragic line over a couple minor chords (how can 18 years get up and walk away) can completely retextualize the song. Even someone who couldn't particularly relate to the story would hear that and go "damn".
Who else remembers when the country stations played this song nonstop when it came out

Yes...I remember when I was a kid and would hang out with one of my best friends. Whenever her parents drove us places, they usually had the radio on the country station and I remember the two of us sitting in the backseat singing along to this. Good times!

Best parts of my childhood were 2000-2006. I was either drifting RC cars in the driveway or putting serious mileage on my bicycle while listening to country music on a battery powered radio. Then I'd come on home and my grandmother would have dinner ready. Now she's passed on, but I still race RC cars and ride my bike. Now I have to use Pandora instead of a radio because today's music is crap, and I don't have my granny's good cooking to come home to. But songs like this definitely bring back memories for me.

I dedicate this song to myself. Lol. I literally was worked like a slave/house wife all of my life and married young. He proposed after 3 months of knowing each other, fell in love, engaged a year and married. Then children soon after. It felt good cleaning my own suds for my little family and not for my extended along with my brothers kids. Made him grow up fast too. But yes, I was out the door and left everyone to clean their own mess for a change. Married 16 years to this day.

I ain't 18 anymore, but everybody needs a taste of freedom. I see myself writin' that note, no sorry, just "I have to go!" All my life, it's do this, do that, don't think that, don't be that way, you don't mean that... Hell yeah I do! I know exactly who I am. I'm takin' off with spinnin' tires in a cloud of dust, & I ain't a comin' home. I'm gonna find my own home!
This reminds me of the good times with my daughter when she was a little girl. We would sing this song out driving and singing at the top of our lungs...I miss those days...my little girl grew up to a woman who wasn't a very good person to me..and it hurts.
High School memories. Froggy 92.9 Sonoma County CA played this NON STOP! Right before country went downhill.

I was 30 years old when I fell in love with this woman's music. I am now 46 years old and I still feel the same way after 16 years. She still makes my heart pound and makes my temperature rise. She is really great

She has the best calves in country also.
My Goodness!!Now that is a Beautiful Country Girl.
And you can’t stop love. Pretty much sums it up.
I'm not a fan of country, BUT her vocals and lyrics move me everytime I hear this song... I ALWAYS smile
I never ever get tired of this song.....

I agree with you, I'm here from Albuquerque New Mexico 2-28-2022 listening to this great song. I have it on my playlist and I listen to it at work before we open up the store. I don't get tired of it either and it's a great song for dancing.
Saw her live at lane county fairgrounds. Her voice is amazing she had some power coming out pretty remarkable. Wow!
I went to a friends house as a teenager .. I had never really listened to country music before. My friend put this video on and we were looking like wth 😂.. by the end of it we were all dancing. When I got to high school I listened to nothing but country. Great memories. Country music was sooooo good back then, I have my country jams playlist with all my jams including this one but it’s hard to go back and listen to some songs bc ones like this just unlock beautiful memories that make you wanna cry😭.. one of my other favorite songs by her is Real Fine Place to Start
I remember the first time I seen this, My reaction was the same as it is now. Sara is drop dead, Breath takingly Ravishingly Beautiful. She is a Fox. To me hands down the most beautiful woman in country music.

She's so humble in this first video...but she remains the same
I remember Sara used to sing at truck stops in Portland Ore. I worked with a man who played in the band back then.
I was only a few years old when this song was popular. Still remember listening to it on the radio with my dad in his 2000 Wrangler Sahara with top off and the doors off, riding down the open road.

I heard this on SiriusXM Station Y2Kountry: where they play country music from the first 20 years of the new millennium, the 2000s and 2010s (the best of Nashville from 2000-2019).
