Lyrics:
I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young, for him they told her
Waiting for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waiting for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone
When the letter says a soldier's coming home

I have decided to make a comment here after some thought. I have kept this info close to my heart for 53 years now and am getting old and wearing out. This song speaks directly to me. I dedicate this comment to Sgt. Jessee Frank Morgan and Cpl . Auburn Foreman. They both died beside me on a worthless little hillside in Dec. 1965. Both were my close friends. As a medical corpsman, I did my best but they did not make it and I was badly wounded. I have never posted their names before but this lovely song seems the right place to recognize them. Semper Fi buddies and Jesse, your son is a fine young man. I talk to him regularly and told him all about u and how u died.

I am a two-time Vietnam Vet. I lost a lot of friends there, and a large part of my soul. When I was 18 and in basic I was called out to perform in the honor guard for a soldier's funeral - a friend of mine from high school. I have never stopped crying I think. The Dixie Chicks may have been reviled by many, but I can only say thank you for this song.

As the daughter of a Vietnam vet, the sister of 2 Gulf War vets, and the mother of a Iraq & Afghanistan War vet, I cry every time I hear it as well. Have you ever heard Airborne Ranger Infantry by Kristy Lee Cook or They Call Me Doc by Walker McGuire. The first one is specifically about Vietnam but I don’t think they mention a time or location in the Doc song. They’re both beautiful but heartbreaking. If you haven’t heard them, you should look them up.

This is an emotionally wrenching song. The storyline carries you, the harmonies sooth you, and the layers of the instruments fill your heart until at the end the drum cadence bruises what is left of your soul. It leaves me in tears. Every. Time.

I am of the opinion that literally every drum cadence such as is displayed in this song needs to go on for a minimum of one more measure, completely unaccompanied. When paying tribute to servicemen, just let the snare have their moment to shine as the inherently martial instrument it is.

I was born February 1967 my father was killed in June 1967. We never met. I had a beautiful mother who raised me to know my father and the love they had. He was 20 she was18. I lost her in1996 to cancer at 47 years old. When I hear this song I think of them both and know GOD is with them and me. I know this song touches a lot of us children who lost a loved one in Vietnam, and the noble people that were part of this war may GOD bless us all.

As an Veteran of the US Army, who served his country during the Vietnam War. The sadness of this song hits home. I was 17 years old. Even those the came back were never the same. She never spoke of him, my guess is it was too painful. I never knew of their story until after she passed away when we came across letters and a locket necklace with his picture. It was heartbreaking. This song makes me think of their sad story of love and loss.😪

This song breaks my heart. I served in Afghanistan and on my second tour in 2010 a very nice American lady called Betty Hidalgo, sent care packages to me and my men, she didn’t know us, we weren’t American, but when I wrote to her and spoke to her, this is her story. As a young girl her man proposed to her before going to Vietnam, he did not come home. She never met anyone else and dedicated her life to supporting soldiers overseas and it is my greatest honour to have called her my friend.

@@emily4gov thank you Emily, she was a really great woman, sadly we lost touch when I left the military, but I was always in awe of just how much support she gave to us. There were times when the resupply chopper would land at our FOB and a huge stack of American boxes would be dropped of for my team. Her and her friends must have spent an absolute fortune just to make the lives of US and British troops a bit more bearable. My daughter was born during that deployment (turning 14 this year) and Betty sent cards and gifts to me for her. The woman was an Angel.

This song hits me hard, in a very odd way: My father was a drill instructor in the army before I was born. He trained a number of platoons, and quit the military just after I was born, because he didn't want to be deployed away from family for long months/years. A few years ago, he confessed that he still gets calls from grieving widows, asking if he can attend the funerals of men he trained, that died while deployed. Most of them moved to the US because they wanted to be heroes. Wanted to go to war and put their skills to use. He showed me platoon photos of the men he trained, and several of them show almost completely blanked out faces. Almost all the men in the platoon are now dead. Almost all the men he trained have gone to war, and not made it home. It was the only time in my life that I've ever seen my father cry. He thinks he didn't train them well enough, and that's why they never made it home. Songs like this have hit very hard since he told me that.

i remember just before deploying to iraq seeing the dixie chicks on the news with all their anti-war stuff. i thought to myself "how un-patriotic". 20 years later i suffer from PTSD and think that i was wrong and perhaps they were the most patriotic out of everyone. they didnt want 100s of thousands (or maybe millions if you include the families of) soldiers to return from pointless fighting that only lined the pockets of politicians.

The first time I heard this I was in Afghanistan and it was played on the radio shortly before I was rehearsing a repatriation duty that would happen later on that evening for a Marine from my unit that was killed. Every time I hear it now, it provokes such emotion in me. I think about the dismembered bodies I carried as they made their final journeys home. I think about the families, friends and loved ones. I think about how there is now a void in so many lives that can never be replaced. I think about love. I think about war. I think about my son, and the sister he will have in 10 days. I think about how lucky I am to have life a head of me but at the same time an overwhelming sense of sadness that so many were not able to return from war and live the lives that they would have lived. I think. I reflect. I remember. Rest In Peace Damian, Georgie, Tony, John, Steven, Damien, Marc, Ben and Mick.

I'm British. But all warriors deserve my respect. I am currently in the process of joining the British Army. I hope I can do amazing things. What you have to remember is that NATO is building schools, hospitals. We are helping the afghan, police and military get back on it's feet. For the most part, we are just there to help.
