Everybody could laugh at eachother with no hard feelings in a perfect world... but we live in a world where these same people who are getting laughed at were treated miserably throughout centuries based on their looks and skin colour.. they weren't allowed to share the same public bathrooms, sit in the same restaurants and were deemed unworthy of basic human rights. So when european/white people crack jokes at black people or non white people.. it carries a bit more weight. White people would feel the same way if they were in black people's shoes. Moaning about it in this day and age won't change anything people do need to move forward.. but poking jokes at those people based on their appearance is a shit go.

Sure, calling someone an animal is not racist but particularly calling a black person a monkey has a lot more history than red heads being called orangutans. In fact I have never heard a redhead called that. In Europe at some football games, in the past they threw bananas on the field to make fun of black people. It’s saying that they are inferior. If you don’t mean to say they are inferior than why not he was a Gallagh or donkey? Monkey specifically is used because of racist tropes that suggest that black people are “less evolved” than others and “look like” apes because of their dark skin. If you don’t get it what can we do but you will keep finding out that there is many people that are offended by calling black people monkeys.

I attended a Rugby International between Australia v Samoa which Australia won easily 76-0 in what was expected to be a close game. I was seated with a large contingent of Samoan fans having got my ticket from a work mate who was involved in the pre game entertainment as one of the traditional Samoan dancers. In the after match speech the captain of Samoa thanked their teams sponsors Polynesian airlines and then said But the way we played tonight they'll probably makes us paddle our canoes home! All the people around me burst out laughing and applauded his comment. What has happened to the days when you could laugh at yourself??

@@lapalad l am the daughter of a Welshman!!!! AND l lived and worked with the indigenous in the Pilbara for 11 yrs. As l said l connected to the humour you commented on in your original post. Plus l enjoyed a lot of Sams humour, but he often went right over the top, as he did here.

Aboriginals / African Americans have been hugely discriminated against for hundreds of years with abject slavery and genocide.
