These fish are beautiful, they are among my favorite Mexican cichlids .... I had a lot of red-shaped little ones long ago by a very famous Mexican friend of mine J.M.Artigas Azas....like#15

I was told the females have that black dot on their gill plate. So, pretty sure this is a female. Did you ever find out for sure?

He’s the tank boss at the moment. Does a bit of chasing but it’s just to keep others in line. I think in a spacious tank he’ll be just fine. Apologies for the super late response

That is a male. Female are more colorful. I have a pair and they are very nice.

Females get the red belly males dont...I used to breed them...very aggressive fish while breeding...my male tried to kill my female after every time

If you look at the dorsal fin, it looks male. Also looks very aggressive for it's size..... Unrelated, but how do you have your light set up? The shadowing looks very cool.
