A DEAD GIVEAWAY That Your Fish is a Female

So today I was editing a different video, when I glanced at my 210 gallon aquarium and saw my Salvini cichlid acting incredibly, overly aggressive ( they are normally just overly aggressive)...when I took a closer look I saw why! This fish normally shows female traits, but also show's male traits because of her high rank so I wasn't 100% confident that it was a female, but when I saw her egg tube lowered...without a doubt I know she's a female! Now of course only adult females will drop their tube (the tube comes down when they are about to lay eggs, then goes back up when their finished)...but hopefully this video can help you if its your first time with cichlids!

My Bolivian Ram pair, male and female, both have something that looks like an egg tube.

My giant female blackmoor gold fish has it and my female bettas have it too ( the so called egg spot ) , and I’ve noticed it also in female barbs ... I think it’s a characteristic common in many fish
love the light orange one!lol

thx for the suggestion but not likely to find one big enough. and if i did, it would be very expensive. stuff like jd's are not common here in trinidad, so even little guys would cost $150 or more.

Its common for these cichlids to go through mood swings and attack (some times killing) their partner. It best to provide hiding for the female that the male can't fit into or dividing the tank for some time
My green terror just laid eggs. I'm thinking of dividing off the tank so she or the eggs dont get eaten. I dont have another tank to move everyone. It's a 75gal. All tips & suggestions are welcome. What should I do ??? Is that a good idea.

Do you have a male to fertilize the eggs? If not the mother will eat them herself once she realizes their dead.

@@dwsdarius yes I have a Male Jack in the tank .they get along fine but . Like you said she ate the eggs 😥😫 .Hopefully next go around they will get lucky
Is this just for American Cichlids or can this apply to mouth brooding Cichlids as well?

Mouth brooding cichlids will have their egg tube exposed as well...the thing is that it doesn't last as long with mouth brooders, probably for just a few days because they already have a nesting spot, their mouth...whereas American cichlids can have their tubes out for weeks finding and defending a nesting area until safe to lay

If the eggs turn white (when they are laid they are almost transparent), then thy are unfertile and that's one reason why the parents my eat them...the other reason would be because they just are bad parents...some cichlids (for some reason its more common with parrot cichlids) just don't know how to raise their young...that's the case with my green terror pair

i just got 3 in today its really touh trying to sex them but if i end up with more than one male maybe we ca make a swap male for a female

Yes, if the tube is down than you can expect eggs shortly, regardless if you have a male or not

I bought a beautiful Green Terror the other day. I had been wanting a male. The clerk in the pet store kept calling it "He." What a turd he was, He just wanted to make the sale. It's a female and I didn't even catch on to check.

Yeah it could have been an honest mistake - like the way some car guys call their Hot Rod a "She." I shoulda been paying attention. Now when I do get a male and have that pair, I'll end up with tons of babies and will never lack for a male again.
