I’ve been on the battlefield many times and this monument is always a must stop and reflect. Very touching.

I drove on numerous school bus tours for Meyersdale Schools back in the 90's. The tour guides included this little tidbit about Sallie. "There were two things Sallie hated, Confederate rebels... and... Democrats!" Good pup Sallie...

That is a very specific statement that has its very own story and history. And yes, it is pretty accurate to the temperature of the nation at that time... and apparently today.

This is now my favorite of your stories, you do a very nice job relating the history of that special monument. Thank you.

I absolutely LOVE the obscure things that we humans do for keeping important parts of history alive. Just think, the dog was SO important that they made sure they had it on the monument and left that space in the picture. CRAZY. The little pup that bound them all together.

It's always wonderful to see loyal Sallie remembered!

People think my dogs are crazy and dangerous. But they are probably just like Sallie Ann... protective of the ones who show them kindness.

I try to pull out the "human" part of all the site I visit. I think it is where the REAL story is found. We are quite the odd creature.

Brindle bulldog, or Bullterrier. Something like that. Thank you, they are awsome dogs, being bred and trained right.

Sally Ann moved me because I am a dog lover. And it is one of the more odd stories of the Civil War.

Great little video, and very informative. Almost brought a tear to my eyes. Wondered if the 1910 photo used mentioned any of the vets who attended the ceremony? My gg-father Samuel Reed Hilins 1943-1914 was to have been there. Would be nice to have a pic. of him. Thanks

Funny that back then, when true order and discipline was so severe, that they'd be allowed to have a mascot like that.

I think nobody initially took to the ownership and she was just a random dog running around. Until she started doing cool things... then it would have become a Morale issue once it came to question of putting her down or keeping her away. But then again... Pennsylvanians :D (which historically are always the ones with dogs beside them in all the wars)

@@ODDySEEy I mean that's how it always starts, stray dogs on base. Then the troops get friendly with them because the troops are still kids for the most part. But the difference is nowadays if they catch you with one you get burned. And the dog would be euthanized. In fact they're proactive in that they try and trap the dogs and euthanize them. Or have been known on many occasions to just go around shooting them.
