Civil War Artifacts & Happy Independence Day! | Gettysburg 161
We make our annual trip to The Horse Soldier Antique Shop in Gettysburg to check out what Civil War artifacts they've come across over the past year. Then at the end of the video we have a special surprise for Garry as he gets to take a relic out to the battlefield.

The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Part cure of not having been to Gettysburg in the last 5 years is knowing that this team of historians will always make me feel like I am walking the fields with them. As far as the Horse Soldier is concerned I have spent hours of previous trips inside that shop studying case after case. However there is always that feeling when leaving that I will have to return as soon as I can to see what I missed and what new items have arrived. Thank goodness that they keep their website updated on a daily basis which serves me well until my return! Happy 4th from Long Island!
Thank you for preserving America’s small history.
Garry you need to buy that, I think you really love that book.
love going to The Horse Soldier Shop--its a store and a museum experience
No matter your background there are always opportunities for learning something. Well done by the Horse Soldier, Garry and crew. Happy Independence Day from Louisville KY.
The Horse Soldier is a must, and has been for many years!
Much respect to the owner of the Horse Soldier bringing authentic memorabilia for those who want to own a piece of real history. The segment at the devil's kitchen with the diary of Lucius Larraby (sp?) was heart tugging.💔 I have always been more drawn to the stories of soldiers and civilian involved in the civil war, a lot more than the battle aspect. Thanks Garry and Kris.
Outstanding artifacts.
Happy Independence Day from Indiana.
Amazing video. Thank you Garry and team for another awesome video!
Amazing Artifacts from the war - Thank for sharing
As usual from the American Battlefield Trust, an outstanding insight into the Battle of Gettysburg. Happy Independence Day from Iowa City, home of the 21st and 22nd Iowa (Grant at Vicksburg)
Deff a must visit while in Gettysburg, so many things to see there not just from the Civil War either
Gary, Kris, and Sarah Thank you for such an always encountering and engaging experience and video adventure, Happy Independence Day, the artifacts of the aide station really expand the perspective of the ACW there at Gettysburg, and onward, The ACW was one of the first modern wars, and the drill manual of 44th NYSV INF story of Lucius Laraby, and the regt facing the 4th Texas and 4th Alabama...very real and moving. James L Gould 4th Texas Inf died at Elmira NY CAMP
I love the Horse Soldier, bought s ome of my first Civil War artifacts from here way back in the early 1990’s 😎👍🇺🇸
I served in the Infantry with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. In our armory are a number of captured weapons from America's enemies that we have taken in battle and put on occasional display. I think our last taken was a Dishka machine gun from the Taliban but it got blown up by an IED during transport at the tail end of the battle of Marjah. Anyway, seeing that inscription on that butt stock brought a mighty smile to my face. Such a great American military tradition of taking captured weapons from our enemies so we can gloat about it. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent video Garry !!!
You got my full attention when you shared with us this stuff is for sale. I had no idea there was such a place. Thank you for making my Saturday great!
First time I went there I thought it was a museum. Couldn't believe it was all for sale. They have incredible stuff there. If you can afford it.
My great great grandfather, Henry Richards was a member of the 12th Illinois calvary , it brings me great joy to see his flag that he served under. Just wish I could get a better picture of it.
Largest Civil War museum of actual artifacts is in Bardstown, KY.
3:32 that Second National Flag is so clean that I thought it was just the battle flag by itself the first time I saw it.
Fascinating - Thank You
Happy Independence Day from Tennessee

Thank you for this video .
Excellent video!! Thank you!
My husband and I’ve been to Gettysburg a couple of times but this video makes me want to go back. How proud I am of our brave union soldiers who fought to hold our nation together and to rid us of the horrors of slavery. How sad they would be to see what our country is becoming. The desecration of our nation’s flag that they defended so honorable is really disheartening. The Union forever! Happy 4th!
Outstanding job!
A wonderful video as have been all of the Gettysburg 161 videos. The insights on why and what happened and then seeing the actual ground are a wonderful adjunct to what books tell you, especially for someone who lives 15,700 klm away from Gettysburg.
I love this stuff!❤
Horse solider is awesome
This channel has made me realize i need to get back to visit Gettysburg!! Such wonderful videos the last few days, thank you! Very moving experience at the end, when you brought Lt. Larrabee's manual out to Devil's kitchen site! Gave me chills!

Excellent video, thank you for posting! Especially the ending when you brought Lieutenant Larrabee’s manual outside into the field on the ground where he died. Very moving. Happy Fourth everyone!
Great video, Garry, Kris, and Sarah. Very informative. Really interesting story of Lt. Larrabee and his artifacts. Very moving that you took his manual out to Devil's Kitchen. The Horse Soldier is definitely on my list of places to visit once I get there.
Wow, GA, you seem genuinely moved by that experience! Good, good! I was hoping the HS would gift that to you out of friendship and for the advertisement.... and since that soldier is clearly pretty dear to you.
Those uniforms are for much smaller Americans than we have today.

This was real Good to see and thank God that I have KZread to get to see Gettysburg and about the Confederate stuff that was all interesting and Cool to know and to see all of the uniforms that they wore and about all of the different Gun's that they had and that they used I would love to get to go there and to buy some of that stuff but I can't cause that is too far away and me and my Roommate both live on a fixed income that doesn't go very far and we both have health issue's and we have a dog that we share she's a female 3 yr Old German shepherd that's named Mattie after My late Mom who after spending 13 yrs in a Resthome in poor health and in and out of the hospital with different surgeries and it got to be too much for her and on the 5/24/2021 she had a heart attack and she died there at the Resthome and she's been gone for 3 yrs now and I believe that she's in a better place up in heaven with her family and she's looking down at me as my Guardian ANGEL along with the rest of them that's up there too By
and don’t forget to donate to the American Battle Field Trust. I don’t think Gary would mind me saying, no contribution to big or to small will go unappreciated!!
LOVE this shop, shame most are rich for my blood. XD
Thanks for another great video. Is it possible that the staining on the book is his perspiration being in uniform out in the heat? Keep up the great work!
Happy 4th July over the pond. Best thing we Brits did was to loose the independence war! (We’ve got an election ugh) 🇬🇧
Safe holidays from Old West Magazine.
Garry you may want to check out my latest book on another member of the 44th NY Vol. Infantry, "Soldier of Courage, Soldier of Compassion: The Story of Captain Bennett L. Munger Company C, 44th New York State Infantry . It may be of interest to you . A great video as always!
Butterfield??? Is that the same Butterfield mentioned in the film "Gettysburg" by Chamberlain's brother? 🎶 Butterfield Butterfield Butterfield 🎶
The 4th Texas carried an early pattern flag on Little Round Top?
Good morning
Where is Devil's Kitchen? This is the first time l've heard of it. I'm 62, and went to Gettysburg in aught eight to be in reenactment 145. Must be off the beaten path.
I just thought of this, could Gettysburg be the Civil War Equivalent of Ft. McKinley? When the smoke was clearing on July 4, she could still raise the Stars and Stripes
I’ll be there with a wallet as soon as I get back to the USA in October!
Just like kids in a candy shop........😂😂

STOP GLORIFYING WAR! “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.” ~Albert Einstein
After getting beat in every major battle for two years. And Stonewall Jackson being shot by men from N.C. in his own army. The Union finally wins 1 major battle. (Not counting the two Western Fort Battles that Grant Won .The whole War was fought in the East and the South). You'd think they Won the War. Gettysburg this, Gettysburg that. What about Fredericksburg ? They Built right over that battlefield where 7000 Union soldiers were killed. And left about 40 feet of wall and that's all. I'm in many films ,filmed in Gettysburg. But enough about 1 single battle. I'm from Michigan. But I play a Confederate whenever possible. And bleed Gray. Jackson would have had Artillery on Little Round Top. I've also filmed a half a dozen times at Harper's Ferry where Jackson Won 7 Battles, where he got his artillery up a round rock mountain. At Gettysburg a Confederate Artillery Officer was on Little Round Top first and thought he couldn't get artillery up there. Then Warren a tiny weird looking Officer whose eyes looked in two directions, gets a monument for putting artillery there. Every battle the artillery took the high ground. Every time I'm there I want to push that Warren monument down that hill.
Oh, whose straw hat was that you passed?
Coolest store ever
