My great great grandpa fought with this regiment. (He’s only my second great grand father because the men in my family have a habit of marrying very young women when they were very old.) I have studied this regiment throughly and love the book, The Bloody 11th. These men fought in many of the fiercest battles of the civil war, and they were the oldest unit in continuous service from Pennsylvania. Of the 1,890 soldiers who served, only 340 were left to be discharged by the wars end. Somehow my great great grandpa was one of them. So though I am very family with Sally the hero war dog, here I sit on a beautiful morning bawling my eyes out. The men loved this dog, and the dog loved these men. Absolutely beautiful. Rip Sally, you were a good dog indeed.

My great-great grandfather served with the 11th (out of Greensburg) as well! Luckily he made it out.
May she RIP what a smart and patriotic dog she was.❤
I searched and searched all over the battlefield and finally found sallie! Now I visit her every visit ❤
I love visiting Sallie. Such a poignant tribute. I always want to pet her but I don’t. 😊
It's always wonderful to see loyal Sallie remembered!
There stands Sallie like a stone wall!
Love the story, love hearing Gettysburg history
My Great Great Grandfather served with the 11th (William Walthour) out of Greensburg. My siblings and I grew up with my mom telling us stories of Sallie and visiting Gettysburg many summers. Was just there this past summer and had to stop and give her a pet. Love to see Sallie getting some attention.
I have my copy of "The War Dog" very good book!
9:33 GOOD DOG!
Thank you Tim for sharing your knowledge and interesting pieces of Gettysburg's history.
She's a true hero rest in peace Sallie
Excellent, one of my favorite monuments in Gettysburg. Every time I go there we stop at that one for sure.
Tim this is a great story Tim. Loved it! Thank you for sharing! I remember this monument well. Visiting Gettysburg. 💯👍
Love Sallie the War Dog!!! ❤❤❤
Thank you, Tim. I find these fascinating and informative. Keep up the great work!
Great story of a great mascot, friend, and a wonderful soul
Tim is great as always. Love the dedication photo. Was this monument moved? Whose house is in photo ? Was fence marking where stone wall was ? I love that after more than 40 years visiting Gettysburg, I still learn something new EVERY time I visit.
Nice job Tim, always a pleasure to wait for monuments Monday.
Smart dog!
Great video Tim, and Sallie was a pretty astute mascot.
Another good job Tim. What breed of dog was Sally?
Another exceptional video Tim (& ACHS)! Thank you so much!
Can someone clarify? The monuments book says Sallie died in Oct of 1864 at Hatchers Run (first)

Sallie died on February 6, 1865 at Hatcher's Run.
These are so good, but I would suggest that for each video a locator map be displayed which would help viewers who want to visit.

That was my recommendation on last week's video as well. Maybe if we keep asking, we will get it. 👍

@@AdamsCountyHistoricalSociety I absolutely will!
Did I see a spotted lantern fly land on the monument at 5:28 of the video?😆
What breed was she? That statue looks Pitbull -ish.

She was described by Colonel Richard Coulter as a “brindle, bull-terrier, of a fine breed.” If you are familiar with the Little Rascals, Pete the Pup would be a good comparison….basically what we would now call as an American Staffordshire Terrier without the ears being cropped.

@@Joe70445 Thanks Joe, my name is Joe as well. I'm familiar with the Little Rascals. I was a kid in the 70's watching re-runs. Thanks for the info.
Women, rebels, and democrats!!! I Love that....
So Sally hated women, rebels and democrats? I can understand him hating democrats.
How would a dog know if someone was a democrat!?
