So, what did I think of that finale then? Let's find out if this finale is what it is, be that just a finale for fun, or a real palooka.

Highly disagree, the 3d model looked amazing ! And the “I eats me spinach” line was dope too because if you remember how Saitama explained to Genos and Carnage Kabuto how he got strong, and how dumb and absurd his explanation was, Popeye gives Saitama an even dumber and more absurd explanation on how he’s gotten so powerful. This episode got me thinking. A Saitama MU/Fight isn't represented good because of how much he gets bodied, or how much he stomps, it's represented good by how much he ENJOYS the fight. I loved his last monologue, every bit of it, and it was very heartwarming in the end.

I would also point out that there's nothing wrong with it being a death punch. Saitama doesn't normally do that against humans because he doesn't want to kill humans, but this is Death Battle; by their own rules, any characters' moral qualms about killing are assumed not to exist, so it's reasonable that Saitama would approach this fight the same way he would against any monster he sees; explode them with one punch and then carry on shopping.

I still don't understand how or why Mikasa's death is so memed on. That aside, this episode was...something. It delivered in a way I don't think any of us were expecting. I do not care about Saitama, largely due to the toxic side of his fanbase. And yet seeing him so excited, so fired up, so genuinely happy...it made me feel something. Seeing him shed tears of joy as he got his humanity back made me...happy. This is the kind of scene you'd get from a well written fanmade Death Battle, but to see it on an official episode? There’s literally not a single second of this fight that I don’t love. Everything about this fight was done masterfully imo. The music, the jokes, the animation changes, the actual battle itself, everything landed for me in a way that I never expected. It also helps that I have wanted this fight for literal years. I still remember being in High School thinking about possible combatants that could match up well against Saitama and thinking of Popeye. It was one of those match-ups that seemed ridiculous at first, but kept getting better and better the more I thought about it. This fight surpassed my expectations in a way I never thought possible, and that couldn’t make me any happier. Not only is this one of the easiest 10/10 for me, it might very well be my favorite episode. I might even put it above others like Iron Man VS Lex Luthor, Goku VS Superman Round 1, and Balrog VS TJ Combo. Those fights are still absolutely amazing, but this one is on a whole other level. The two biggest reasons are because 1- This fight will probably age better than those other episodes when it comes to its animation, and 2- This fight has a ton of respect for BOTH characters. This isn’t a repeat of Goku VS Superman where Death Battle spent a ton of time trash talking the winner to appease the fans of the loser. This feels like everyone on board legitimately liked both characters and wanted to portray them as well as possible. This fight honestly made me feel like I did back when I was a kid first discovering Death Battle. My respect for the show is the highest it’s been in years, maybe ever. If the future season finales are even HALF this good, they’ll still be amazing. Btw, I don’t personally have a problem with 3D Popeye. It feels like it was meant to be a joke to have the old cartoon character look as “gritty” as possible. It’s ugly, but I don’t think it’s unpleasant to look at. I bet they were originally planning to use a more faithful Popeye, but found this model too hilarious to not use.

At first I was like "bro wtf why is this a fight Popeye would literally obliterate Saitama lmao" but by the time I got to the animation it's honestly the second best episode of the season. Saitama is perfectly represented, and the voice actor is the most accurate sounding voice in a very very long time. And Popeye literally being Popeye throughout the fight was also perfect as well. Something I want to point out about this episode that I absolutely love that neither Nemesis nor Biff mentioned, the sound design. It has a flawless blend of both the impactful and satisfying sound effects from modern anime and blockbusters, and the silly and charming cartoon sounds of a classic cartoon. It's not even that it mixes both at the same time, they're used in the right places at the right time. The start of the fight is very cartoony and intentionally lame, and so drums and "phew"s sounds are used, with my favourite bit the piano when Popeye fixes the wall. But then when Balderdash kicks in, Dragon Ball sounds are used to escalate the fight. Following that is pinball sounds during the light speed battle. When the fight goes sprite based, there's a good break between the 2 commonly heard styles and shifts to 16 bit sounds. Going back to Hand Drawn, for the rest of the fight it's all satisfyingly impactful sound design with the only cartoony sounds coming from Popeye. In fact, during the SFM battle, there are NO cartoon sound effects at all. It's only after the death where sound effects are back to silly, making it feel more like a classic cartoon. I value Sound design so much in filmmaking. It's why Hulk vs Broly feels so mediocre to me and why one of my least favourite episodes is Metal Sonic vs Zero, but also why I still hold Batman vs Spiderman and Thor vs Raiden in such high regard despite Season 1 stuff. This episode is an amazing example of how to edit the sound of a battle. I even love how muted the planet explosion Saitama leaps off is.

10 out of 10 finale. Everything is perfect in delivering the characters, the animation, the song was very good, the moments like Popeye's funny putting back the wall to its place, the punch where Popeye can't read the sentence Death in Japanese, the chunk of the ocean moment before turning to 3D, the clash of Death and Spinach, and that wholesome moment of Saitama having fun that feels more wholesome than All Might vs Might Guy, and the last moment in the fight. All of this brought to together to make the best fight in the season and finale in the show.

While certainly a product of it’s time, Popeye is a genuine inspiration to me. He’s a gruff, honest, but super sweet sailor man who enjoys the thrill of a good scuffle. He’s ugly and not exactly what you imagine a protagonist looking like (usually clean cut and generally handsome), but Popeye doesn’t care. “I yams what I yams”! I’ve been going on a bit of a spiritual journey recently and I’ve noticed that my confidence boosted after watching this Death Battle (unironically). Seeing a character that was a massive inspiration for me finally showcasing to the world how much of a badass he truly is genuinely got me teary eyed. I fucking loved this matchup. I've wanted to see Popeye show up in a DB for a while now, just to see the hosts list some of his feats, and this was everything I expected and more. I didn't think it made much sense as a season finale, but...I mean, jeez, with the different animation styles as they break reality, it just....It felt like a tribute to the show and all the different styles they've used, which is fitting for the finale of the 10th anniversary season. I admit, I normally dislike using Saitama in VS Battles, I feel he's far more...Roger Rabbit then Goku, but, then, that means putting up against a gag character kinda makes sense. I even love how they managed to preserve Saitama's gag by having him actually finish Popeye in one punch...Until spinach. And, I admit, if you're looking an opponent for Saitama, Popeye actually has a shocking amount of commoninalties (IE hilariously strong gag characters known for their odd appearances, and who became as strong as they are via absurdly mundane means, namely, basic exercise and good nutrition respectively). This was, like Goku VS Superman, a season finale that felt like it could ONLY have been a season finale. It was everything I wanted, my only problem with it...Is that it didn't last longer, because I feel like I could have watched these two fight FOREVER. And, when my only problem with a DB is that I wish there was MORE of it, you know you've got a winner on your hands. Solid 9.5/10.

If I recall, the only time we have ever heard Saitama actually excited for a fight was during the dream sequence where… yeah, it’s a dream and it get played it off as a joke when he wakes up and is disappointed that he is still overpowered. But in this fight against Popeye, if Saitama was in this situation, he would most definitely be happy to actually square up against someone who he can actually be serious fighting against. To be thankful that he has lived long enough to finally reach this moment (even if he were seconds from death). In that sense along, that what helps to sell this fight. Pretty sure if you had him angry or upset at any time against Popeye (other than how bored he is of his own strength), that would have gone against his character. Other than that: Hyper realistic 3D Popeye was way too uncanny to deal with…

I am so glad that this epsiode did as amazing as it did, the season started with a 10/10 and ended with a 10/10. I dont think there has been a season that has even done that. This episode was just........spectacular. it makes me so happy on how they were choreographed, written, treated, everything was just what I wanted. The fact this episode rivals Goku v Superman is a massive feat and it contending to be my all time favorite, just amazing. This is such a well made fight, and absolutely deserving of a 10/10

Honestly Season 8 amazed me, considering that the first half took place during a rough time in my life I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it. But it brought back my love for Death Battle that Season 7 almost killed, and was filled with tons of episodes that I truly enjoyed. There was only one episode in the season that I could really say I disliked (Shao Kahn VS Akuma), other than that the worst of the season is just decent, which is a big deal for me. And really the finale was the last seal that this season needed for me to consider it one of the best of the series. I'm really excited to see what they do for Season 9 and I'm definitely looking forward to it......although who on Earth is Boba Fett going to fight??? Also please please PLEASE Death Battle make Cole McGrath VS Alex Mercer happen, I don't know if I already mentioned that but if I did......well uh shit-

Loved the review, I hadn't thought about the way Saitama's animation detail gets amplified when he's fighting seriously but it would have been amazing if that's what happened to Popeye for his planet-buster punch, totally agree with you there. I, too, wish we'd got a still of Popeye's biceps doing something silly rather than the explosion animation we did get, and similarly I missed the jingle that normally plays when Popeye powers up. Minor niggles in a brilliant episode. 9:06 actually there is precedent for this. I've only seen the anime but in the first episode, Saitama gets bodied by a sudden attack of Subterraneans who wipe out about 70% of the human race. He's bleeding down his face (One more thing I'd have loved to have seen from the animation, but that's more a stylistic choice than a problem with the fight), he's outnumbered, and he starts fighting the invaders, and as he does this we get a similar speech to the one here, about this is the fight he's been looking for. There's a moment of pure joy in his face when the Subterranean King appears to avenge his fallen children... and then he wakes up. And I think that's the happiest we ever see Saitama. Doesn't take away from the VA's performance here but I just wanted to put in a minor correction about this being absent from the anime.

This season just kept topping itself (at least for me) Yoda vs King Mickey comes out, its amazing then they drop in Link vs Cloud which regardless of its issues i still love more then they drop in Goku Black vs Reverse Flash which again, regardless of its issues i still love it more and just when i thought they couldn't top Dio vs Alucard which i honestly thought was the absolute peak of this season They drop in the most creative and well animated DB ever with Popeye vs Saitama This season was an absolute banger and its a contender for my favorite season of DB.

Wow what a good episode, incredible finale and honestly meant more to me than Galactus vs Unicron ever good given how much I relate to Saitama’s boredom throughout his life. Him finally getting a fun fight and reacting to it was so cathartic, and the animation was just stellar. Easy 10/10, and would have been my favorite of the season if Goku Black vs Reverse Flash didn’t exist.

I think Goku vs Superman will never be topped. That fight had a feeling that just can't really be replicated due to how anticipated it was, how much death battle made it feel like a big deal fight for the ages (including when they teases it), and how the fight went down (even though the animation is a bit dated). The last scene of this fight though is the best ending to a death battle fight since Goku vs Superman

I agree with you when you gave a 10/10 it's the perfect finale for a season like this. Although we didn't get Galactus vs Unicron, I feel like this episode was equally if not would have been better. I genuinely love this episode and by far the best Season 8 episode that the team committed to making and they did a phenomenal job on this. The first half of the season started off slow for a bit but then got better. Then when the second half hit everything changed from here on out. Yoda vs Mickey, Shadow vs Ryuko, Blake vs Mikasa, Lex vs Doom, Heihachi vs Geese, Po vs Iron Fist, Steven vs Star, and Link vs Cloud(2021) was nice episodes to watch for me at the time. But the second half just did it for me. Batman vs Iron Man, Goku Black vs Reverse-Flash, Macho Man vs Kool-Aid Man, DIO vs Alucard, Akuma vs Shao Khan even though it was bad, Korra vs Storm, Madara vs Aizen, and finally Saitama vs Popeye. I love Both when I was younger and this season for me gets a solid 9/10.

My ONLY complaint from this episode was the pacing at the end. The shot of Saitama on Pluto where he realizes how great of a fight this is needed a BIT of actual fighting before the ending to me, not just one final collision, and that's not enough to make it lose its 10/10 status by a longshot

This matchup is a W to Saitama fans. 1. Saitama gets the fight he always wanted. 2. Death Batlle confirmed that in order to get this fight, he has to go against a toon force character who consistently breaks the fourth law. This kinda soft confirms that Saitama wins against the other two.

Popeye's theme was in the battle, kinda. You can hear a chiptune version of it for the sprite fight segment. Also, Popeye's sprites were not custom, they're from an obscure GBA game. Saitama's are from MUGEN so are kinda custom. Also, fun fact, the "SPINACH" punch also includes a slowed-down version of Popeye's laugh, which is hilarious.
