Saitama has gotten RIDICULOUSLY more powerful since this episode came out. Though it doesn't really matter in my opinion, because as they said in the episode, even if Saitama was stronger than him, Popeye could still win by regeneration and transmutation punch, which is why I think the result's still correct.

Fun Fact: did you know Popeye's involvement actually help create Mario? no joke: Shigeru Miyamoto while working at a very early life of Nintendo was gonna create a game of Popeye that he couldn't make due to not getting the license of the characters for the game. so he than began to create Donkey Kong, Pauline and Mario. sure, there is now an old Popeye game for the Arcade and NES as well as other consoles a year after Mario was made but the idea a game that wasn't made later gave rise to one of the biggest icons since Mickey Mouse is wild to think about. it's almost in the same league where Walt Disney made Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, lost the rights to Universal and then created Mickey Mouse. the world of Licensing it bizarre yet creates staples of franchises!

@@tacoshop7722 Mario and Popeye would get along just fine, but Popeye would actually not like Superman because of how Superman has gotten more darker in the alignment chart. Also, in response to crcoghill's comment, the Popeye short that inspired the creation of Donkey Kong is "A Dream Walking".

Saitama is actually even more impressive with the chapters that have come out in the last year, but... yeah it still doesn’t change a thing about this fight.

Shortly after this episode dropped, Saitama got a feat in the manga where a punch of his blew up millions of stars in the distance and he sneezed away Jupiter's atmosphere, then he managed to time travel and punch his enemy before the fight even started. That's obviously way way above what was in the DB, but it doesn't matter. Until Saitama gets toonforce feats where he can punch out his animator, rewrite the story or ignore all of reality getting shut off just for laughs, he simply wouldn't be able to win a fight like this.

Although, Bluto does have his moments of being damaged; plus, in "We Aim to Please", it ends with Popeye hitting Bluto so hard, the big lug turned into a sausage (I kid you not, it actually happened).

@@RossPitSharkHunter Well people are saying Bluto is durable, but he doesn't even have the reality-breaking decomposite punch that Popeye has. Heck, there were two examples of Bluto eating Spinach (from Fleischer Studios and Famous Studios, and both share the same premise of getting hurt to go to the Hospital), and he still doesn't have the decomposite punch that Popeye had, he only gave Popeye bruises to convince Olive to tend to his wounds.

Great to see Dart again! I disagree that you could replace Popeye with Daffy Duck because Daffy Duck's main role is failure. He survives everything but he doesn't win. And most toons who win do it by smarts. Popeye's one of the few toon characters defined by victory in combat. It's what Saitama would have wanted anyway.

Popeye can deal with anything that gets thrown at him. Saitama can not. In a fight he usually turns the enemy into the joke and therefore wins. But when video games or a single mosquito turn him into the joke, not so much. So, against a character who is not just defined by victory in combat, but also by always ending up on the comedic high ground, there's only one roll left for Saitama...

@@davidc. He occasionally wins, mostly he suffers while being arrogant so his suffering is funny. And again, when he wins things it's not victory in combat. But yes, he's as immortal as any toon. But that's why Death Battle likely wouldn't use him, as the fight wouldn't end; Daffy can't die but really has no ability to kill a sufficiently powerful foe either.

What I love about this is that, even though Saitama THOUGHT he couldn't get any stronger than he was then (because he couldn't imagine anything beyond it), he got immeasurably stronger.

A overall happy ending. Also Saitama loves his bargains.

As far as the price. I think they were shooting for 1500 yen (¥) which in USD (at the time of this post) is $10.16 The issue is that Japanese Yen doesn't use the cent system we do. So assuming ¥100=$1 if something was $24.26, it would be ¥2,426

This reaction was a great time! It was super fun rewatching the death battle with your commentary, and dart definitely doesn’t hurt. Saitama is probably in my top 5 anime characters, so seeing this death battle and seeing you get a glimpse of his character, it was dope.

I'm glad they went into the actual medical nature of just destroying your body lol Dart makes a good point that we're assuming that Popeye exists in a universe with the same physics as ours. The animators just really did whatever they wanted with Popeye, huh You'd think if Saitama is so bored all the time that he would just... stop working out. This is my favorite battle in the entire series.

If I have to say anything about this one, this was how you end a season given this is the Season 8 Finale but I will say, my wtf moment in this fight was when the battle went into 3D and I saw Popeye's model in the fight and that is like the most hilarious and also cursed model of Popeye like that I did not see coming. Next time, welcome to Season 9, Ris as you have 17 episodes left until you be able to catch up to where we are at and by that, I mean we would already be done with this season and already be waiting on Season 10 but good news is that with the wait for the next season, that gives you enough time to finish up Season 9 so you'll be caught up to us when we start up Season 10. Until then, see ya next week for the Season 9 Premiere, Harley Quinn VS Jinx (DC Comics VS League of Legends).

DevilArtemis (3D animator for Death Battle, also made this model) is the new Torien Crawford lol Since when would we be done with season 9 already? Since season 3 the seasons are annualy, starting within the first quarter of the year and ending during December, so season 10 was pretty much guaranteed to not start before next year. If Ris continues with weekly episodes next year as well, it's indeed possible for him to wrap up this season before the next comes out.

DB got copyright clamed and had to mute this part out 15:10 must be on the website. edit: yeah had to check on the video now and it's Wiz talking over that scene. it still works but it's just wild how one little copyright claim for like 10 seconds made DB not use audio from shows/movies/maybe video games afterwards. ironic a team gets Copyright claimed all the time copyright claim people's reactions to their videos.

Oh something that I didn't mention at all in my first comment, starting from Season 9 and onwards, the "End of Rundown" quotes are removed as they did that to avoid the risk of KZread copyrighting the episodes as when Saitama VS Popeye came out on KZread, that got hit hard as they had to change up a scene in Saitama's rundown with Saitama explaining his workout routine and also removing the "End of Rundown" quotes for both Saitama and Popeye which lead to that change for Season 9. So just letting ya know just in case.

This is a good one

So after this episode came out, Saitama had a fight with God Garou, and his most ridiculously impossible feat happened. He farted in such a way that he was able to fly from Io to Earth in a few seconds, that was a fart that was 6x faster than the speed of light. So he not only was able to survive the acceleration, but also somehow found a way to rapidly decelerate himself, and survived that too.

Congrats, Ris! You are now officially onto the current season! …Which is almost over, but still, you’re catching up. Harley Quinn (DC) versus Jinx (League of Legends) is up next, just to save you the trouble. Also, I’d like to let you know about some changes this season has in store. Spoiler-free, of course. 1. You know how characters would have short little clips of them at the end of their rundowns? Well, those were removed to prevent the risk of KZread copyclaiming episodes because of them, same goes with RT versions. Hope that isn’t too much a bother. 2. There are now comparison panels at the end of fights to show just how an opponent won, so that may or may not be fun to read. XD 3. This season also makes more use of the side characters you saw in Macho VS Kool-Aid, so expect to see the likes of the wildcard Ringmaster and bookworm Jocelyn to pop in here and there alongside DUMMI. 4. Lastly, this season is quite an experimental one, with the fights consisting of some new franchises (League of Legends being one of them) and interesting theming. So, I’m not sure how much you already know about the current season, but if you’re good enough in the dark, expect a few surprises here and there.

who great to see Dart again, its been so long. Popeye is such a unique beast, I would be interested to see him fight someone else with insane toon force like Mask or Sponge Bob. but I really don't know how they could determine a winner. likewise I think they dodged a bullet by not doing One Punch vs Superman as no matter how that fight whent alot would be unhappy but with a cartoon it makes more sense

This is one of the reasons why I maintain that older cartoons are far superior to new ones...Back then, the only limit was the imagination of the writers & animators but now, animated cartoons are restricted by governments, social media platforms, & corporate"office politics." Creators these days have been hamstrung & are not allowed to do what they would really want to do. I've seen this happening first-hand over the years, ever since I would sit down in front of the TV on Saturday mornings; Nowadays, cartoons suck in comparison and, out of disgust & disappointment, I haven't even plugged my TV into a wall socket & turned it on for more than 15 years. If I've really missed anything over that time it hasn't been much because I still see & hear other people talking about the new crap all the time even without turning on a TV. Death battle is consistently entertaining for me, especially when they come up with stuff like this, Deadpool (with the Continuity Gem) vs. The Mask, Kirby vs. Majin Buu, & even Saitama vs. The Hulk (by Zimaut Animation) but there are few things that catch my eye anymore. Be that as it may, can we take a moment to appreciate that every time the background art & animation styles changed, they were breaking through into other dimensions? It's rare even for Death Battle & the only one that comes to mind right now is Chuck Norris vs. Segata Senshiro.

I actually like to see a matchup between Popeye vs the mask. That would be an interesting matchup.

I wasn't fond of how he spoke and even more so of his facial expressions and gestures. I was not diagnosing him with ADHD. But considering the responses on my comment, I'll wager if in the future I should use 100 words when I thought one might be enough.

It depends on the parody/satire, yeah. Like I wouldn't enjoy something *just* because it's a parody/satire, but I also wouldn't dislike something just because of it. I didn't find the first episode of OPM funny, and the parts that I did enjoy were the parts it then proceeded to "make fun of." So, maybe it'd grow on me, maybe not, but yeah, I've never seen beyond the first episode.

@@Ris_Grestar Interesting. You are actually one of the very few minority that wasn't into OPM. About 90% of the people that I'd spoken to did like the series. So I guess people generally love poking fun and laugh at the absurdities of something that's well-loved. Like how people enjoy The Boys for its satirical take on superheroes (and our society as a whole).

The recent big three are subverting one expectation of the genre: OPM is about a hero who doesn't have to struggle in any fight, Invincible is about a more realistic world where you aren't always able to save everyone and the line between good and bad is nowhere near as clear, The Boys is about selfish superheroes which makes them more a threat than help to society. I personally am more interested in shows that have some sort of subversion, because I prefer when something makes me think and get different "morals of the story". But just because the premise is different, it doesn't mean the show is good. I like OPM because it's not just about a superstrong dude, but because it shows how he and the world (try to) cope with his situation. There are many people learning a lesson by meeting him and therefore many lessons the audience can learn as well. I like Invincible not just because it's trying to be more realistic, but it even teasing tropes just to not follow them in the end. It teaches that not everything is predictable and not everyone should be pigeonholed. I don't know if I would like The Boys; its premise didn't persuade me. It just seems like a role reversal where the superheroes constantly need to be displayed as evil and the show doesn't really evolve past the question: "How do our protagonists take down the next superhero?" In Invincible the first episode starts with a cast of superheroes similar to famous characters from Marvel / DC. And they get killed off by the end of it. The heroes shown after that are more different to their possible inspirations. In The Boys the superheroes seem almost like carbon copies looking at their abilities. Only difference: They are selfish. And that needs to be told constantly, so we still have underdog heroes fighting villains. The lack of care for an interesting, cohesive storyline shows itself when you consider how many plot points just get dropped. That's something I can't confirm, obviously, but the things I've read seem believable to me. Like the laser baby that they had for a while, so the protagonists were indirectly using superpowers. I also don't enjoy Mob Psycho which is by the same author as OPM. On the other hand I can get some enjoyment out of a few superhero / Shounen shows, as long as I don't try to immerse myself too much. I can enjoy My Hero Academia where the heroes just continously get another "biggest challenge they ever had". It's interesting to hear the characters thinking and coming up with creative solutions to their problems. Though I could do without seemingly every female hero having a pronounced and / or oversized chest and certain stale characters that apparently can't develop past their perversiveness (like a certain sticky ball guy) or their jealousy and need to brag (like that doofus from class 1-B). I can enjoy Hajime no Ippo (less superhero, but still Shounen) because the thoughts and observations of the people do make those fights much more believable and don't feel tedious (that's how Dragonball felt to me). Though I don't like the weird sides the characters show during their downtime.

It seems like the good combination that not only keeps watchers at the edge of their seat, but also provides them with entertainment. The show expands to mocking our world as a whole, using superheroes as placeholders of sort.

first: this death battle is awesome my opinion: i hate toon force being used in a serious fight, cause there is no point in giving the foe any feats cause toon force is just "lol i win" i hate when people make cartoon characters fight much more serious fighters from non cartoon shows, no research, no effort, they just make the cartoon character win, if the fights were actually accurate and done right, the toon force character will always lose, which is why if i had a vs show, i will only include cartoon character a few times, make them lose and never include them again again this death battle is good, i have no issues with it, zero problems, it's great, but as a whole, when ever i see a cartoon character in vs show, the enjoyment is sucked out cause it is never fair for the none cartoon character, cause without toon force, they can never fight on an even playing field, the cartoon character will always be forced to win, it no fun, a fun fight is when both side are even and both have a chance of winning, having one op (or not op in the case of toon force since it is not a power) vs a weak character is just not fair, if you made it this far, thanking for hearing me out and reading my ted talk bye

I think you just summed up how I feel about this Episode. I want to add on that I felt underwhelmed with this Death Battle. Dw, I too have little to no problems with this Episode, but it just doesn't feel like a Finale to me, at least as "10 Years of Death Battle" goes.

@@somechupacabrawithinternet8866 I think that would severely hurt the representation of any toon force character. Saitama shrugging off every attack also borders on toon force. There's a reason why his potential doesn't get recognised. Almost no one in his universe would believe that he could tank any attack from any moster or hero and defeat any of them with just one punch. I see the same problem with your opinion on toon force. I also think that at least not everyone decides to ignore research just because one character has toon force which I'd claim is somewhat true. The weirdest looking feat for me was that "giving the sun a black eye", but then again I really don't think that the stats mattered in this fight. On the other side I have seen plenty of feats "regular" feats I'd rather disregard. It's just that the writers usually don't do the math for every single action, leading to feats that seem outlandish or should non-sell anything else happening in the show. Like Megaman.EXE exploring an entire universe in a few minutes, leading to speeds nothing in the Mega Man universe coming anywhere near it for example. (There are also some things I don't agree with Death Battle's feats specifically like not separating between travel and combat speed / giving feats through scaling to other characters even if they are supposed to be inferior [Cloud's ridiculous speed feat by scaling to Bahamut's travelling speed.)

Glad to see Dart again. Been too long, loving his goatee. Also this was a fun battle overall, even if outdated. For the time it came out, Popeye definitely has zero disadvantages and Saitama simply didn't have the strength to overwrite his toon force. Though with recent feats from Saitama in the manga puts them on more equal footing. Specifically the Causality Punch he used against Garou who was powered by a cosmic deity called God. The punch rewrote history and wiped out an entire timeline to where they fight they would've had (they fought together which destroyed a massive cluster of stars leaving a void in space, shaking reality with each collision, sneezing the atmosphere of Jupiter etc) he ended the fight before it even started via time travel. Oh right I forgot, Saitama can now time travel. That's how he beat Garou by going back to before the fought and beat him before it even began. It was such a crazy feat that the term Reversal of Causality by definition is a multiversal level feat. But downgraded to only tailor to Garou's actions making it universal bare minimum. Regardless, the fact Saitama could do that now, it's possible he could beat Popeye before they even fought. But that's just speculation. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this battle and your guys reactions. Hope to see another Collab with you two again in the near future, when convenient of course 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

I really want Samus vs master chief only to laught when halo fans are crying, lucemon vs necrozma sounds interesting but like, it's really a bad matchup don't understand the connections beside pokemon vs Digimon. Also necrozma by the rules of the show wouldn't have his ultra necrozma form because he needs to fuse with another pokemon and that's outside help.

Sorry but even with the new feats. Popeyes still stomps with surviving the world being turned off and destroying his universe (aka the film strip), and unmeasurable cartoon feats. Oh and this was before spinach

Not with this viewer or anything but every time death battle makes one of their videos, it feels Ike a lot of people get mad. And a lot of these fights seem really dumb to me. Not as fun as they used to be. Watching them is just boring to me at this point and I usually don't watch them anymore

@@Vinylmelody1517 Well, since you commented on this video, I assumed you might be talking about this fight. You sound like you could be at the same point that I was just a year ago. I was also at the point of giving up on the show. The fight responsible was Link vs Cloud. I'm in no place to argue about the result (which I can accept), but there was enough stuff I think I am able to complain about: The analysis was bland and had minor flaws, the feats on both sides seemed and might even felt outlandish to me, the animation seemed unfinished, thanks to the art direction it was often hard to see and Link's characterisation was completely made up (even though it had become much more important to the show), Fierce Diety didn't leave any impact (as Link's most destructive form) and the Triforce was randomly thrown in at the end to achieve nothing (compare it with Ganondorf vs Dracula). This episode left a sour taste in my mouth, especially since it is a rematch of the most controversial fight. At least before Goku vs Superman came a long, but people have calmed down over the years. Not so for Link vs Cloud. Back then people sarcastically claimed that Link could beat Superman and the audience holding a grudge returned for this rematch where "Cloud better wins". I've seen some reactors that were clearly biased against Link, Nemesis used this video for his parody of debunkers. This episode was somewhat able to represent Cloud, but a total failure on Link's end. The only thing it achieved was satisfy the fanbase that was still angry that Cloud lost after about 10 years. And without Smash Bracket's Link vs Ridley which did both in the analysis and in the fight a much better job at portraying Link, I probably still wouldn't know why I hated DBs episode so much. So why did I still come back? Because I decided to take the show less seriously. Even if I end up don't liking an episode there are still enough others coming out that are fun to rewatch. Animations got better and more consistent and even if I'm not as invested in a match-up, it sometimes makes me interested in new franchises. I'd like more unique match-ups like Raiden vs Wolverine. I'd love more match-ups where the victor doesn't seem pretty clear cut from the beginning. But DB has enough enjoyable qualities if you overcome its shortcomings - some of them even unmatched by other versus shows. If that's out of the question for you: That's fine. But maybe you'll be able to come back to this show you probably once loved if you take it less serious and stay away from the more invested fans.
