SAILING LYMINGTON TO PLYMOUTH VIA PORTLAND BILL

Episode 17
Bringing her home - Sailing SV Compromise
A'up you gorgeous crew
In this episode we start the journey of bringing our boat from the Lymington the place we bought her, to taking her all the way around the South West of England and up the Irish see to Whitehaven in beautiful Cumbria.
We Leave Lymington and stay over night in Portland before an early start to Plymouth where we have a couple of days. In the next episode we head up the Helford River in Falmouth.
We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support and subscribers we have even though we haven't had a boat, hope you have really enjoyed our journey of us learning to sail and searching for a boat. We have been super excited to have brought you along with us and to be honest if it wasn't for some of the supportive comments we have had, we could given up, for this we thank you so much.
Hope you enjoy our videos even more now we have our boat.
Thanks for your support, it really does mean a lot to us.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank Shaun & Barry who volunteered to help bring our new boat home, you guys were amazing!
Thanks
Gav, Hannah, Liam & Kyle x

Great one guys, love the music too. I'd look at the friction on the main halyard. If it creaks and groans like that there is usually something not right, maybe kicker on, reefs all need to be free. Some spray silicon lube on mast track helps too. Also let off back stay as bend in mast will cause friction when hoisting. Shouldn't need too much back stay unless beating and it is used to de-power mainsail by bending top of mast and letting leach fall off. Look forward to next episode. Andy UK

Thanks Andy since the reefing became free it's stopped the main creaking, I think it was too much strain, all is good now the main rises and falls with ease. It's something we'll keep our eyes on. From memory the backstay isn't particularly tight but I'll check. Thanks for the advice, we are all ears when it comes to advice and help 👍🏼 Cheers mate

Oh BTW watch out for the transom shower O ring on the shower head. They leak if the tap is left on after a few years. Where have we heard that before? And yes my bilges are now dry LOL :-) We watched your progress on Facebook guys, the blogs were great. Good crew too! Looking forward to seeing the next video. Sail safe. Ant and Cid xx

SV Impavidus (Ant & Cid Sailing) In all honesty I didn't know to push the shower tap up to the top as far as possible to turn it off. Doesn't seem the best design! I really enjoyed doing the blogs on Facebook although I can't spell for 💩 lol My crew was amazing I learnt so much from them, way more than I could've learnt on a course. Loving following your adventure guys X [Gav]

Well it’s about time you guys fielded a football team for the cup. Even though the high didn’t last they looked good overall. I mean at least you guys made it to the cup! Glad for you guys! Everyone makes mistakes, that the only way you really learn! Congrats again.

T.J. Mills They did really well to say it's such a young team, got beat by a better team. Sure we'll make many mistakes along the way but like you say that's how you learn 👍🏼

Great video as usual. Some thoughts on some of the problems you had. We love our single line reefing but yes those cars inside the boom can show a resistance particularly when taking a reef out. TOP TIP for winter. When you take the main off, the lines at the back will just be lying on the cockpit floor so we go to the gooseneck and keep pulling until all the lines are there and then we drape the whole lot over the boom. You MUST put a stopper knot (fig. of 8) in the lines at the end of the boom and the ones that you will have pulled through the jammers otherwise the line will disappear inside the boom and you’re @@@@@@! Ask me how I know 🙁. Re the shower head leaking that’s a common problem too as people don’t drain the system down for the winter, they freeze, crack then leak. Again what we do is remove the head (look out for the rubber sealing washer), turn the taps on all around the boat and turn the leccy pump on. Drain, then we leave all the taps open. Some people like to drain the calorifier (on our boat there’s a blue pipe in front of the engine) but we have never bothered. Because of the construction of modern boats (internal grid) accumulated water will continue to make its way into the bilge for some time now so don’t panic. Going back to the leak I must admit I’m surprised you didn’t hear the electric water pump blipping as the pressure dropped particularly if you slept on the boat in Lymington. Commonish problem on boats and ALWAYS down to a leak. Happened to us once and I went round wrapping kitchen roll around all the fittings. Turned out to be a cracked shower head because......... 🤪🤪🤪🤪. Looking forward to your next adventure 👍

S Jay You are a star, thanks for the tips 👌🏻 We was both really happy that she's got single line reefing, it was a nightmare going up on deck to clip the reef in when we did our RYA DS courses. They have free'd off now and work fine but we will definitely do what you recommend for wintering. The shower leaking was my fault I didn't quite push the shower tap up enough to turn it off and it was seaping the whole time we was out. It's made me realise we could do with an automatic bilge pump. Cheers for the wintering tips mate it sounds a similar process to what we did on a static caravan we had years ago. Cheers for watching and fair winds ⛵️👍🏼

Top tip: Buy a marker pen. How we reef our mainsail: 1. Just keep sailing, no need to go head to wind. 2. Release the gas strut kicker, it’s then ready to raise the boom when you 3. Release the mainsheet ... a bit! No need to let it all the way off so the boom hits the shrouds. You’ll know when it’s enough as it won’t have any pressure in it, nor is the boom flailing dangerously. 4. Drop the main halyard but see below for the (relatively) clever bit. Which you might already know. Sob.😢 5. Tighten the first (blue) reefing line as tightly as you can. 6. Tension the main halyard ... tight. (See below) You don’t want a baggy luff. Nobody wants a baggy luff🤪 7. Sheet in 8. Kicker on 9. Pull in the now dangerously loose second (red) reefing line so that no one gets lassoed. 10. Tidy up ....and ... rest. What I think is the clever bit with the main halyard is if next time you are head to wind in calmish conditions put in the first reef. Then mark the halyard six inches behind the clutch. One mark. Repeat for the second reef and mark the halyard twice. You now have preset positions that you drop the main to. This overcomes the problem of just letting the halyard go and having to wind in feet and feet of it which in strong wind is knackering. And it’s done a lot quicker. This way once you’ve tensioned the reefing line you only have to wind in just 6 inches of halyard. You probably knew that.🤨🤨 Oh, just watched the video again and your backstay is permanently loose. Just saying. Hope this helps. Oh, and you’ve probably been told or heard that the time to reef is when you first think about it. Not always true, we’ve had some cracking sails with full sail up but to be honest the boat seems to go just as fast with a reef in. Easier to take out if you don’t need it than put it in when it’s a bit late and the boats rounding up. So much to learn.🤪🤪🤪

S Jay I can't swear on here but you are a f###ing legend 🤗 Amazing advice and definitely something we'll put into practice! I'd seen on somebody else's video of the lowering the halyard to a mark behind the clutch but not really thought much of it. We've got lots to learn but we both love and appreciate learning from more experienced sailors, we keep telling Liam & Kyle that they have two ears and only one mouth lol Thanks again mate
