Destination Med Via Newlyn - Penzance - Falmouth

Season 2 Episode 10
Destination Mediterranean Part 2
📹 VIDEO DESCRIPTION: In this episode we leave Ireland and head towards France when we encounter an autopilot and engine problem which forces us to head back North towards the UK again. We limp the boat to Newlyn Harbour where we spend a few days putting the boat right and waiting for the right weather window to head back for France and the Mediterranean.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 ABOUT THE FOUR OF US:
Gav & Hannah met back in 1996 on a blind date, we both had a real zest for adventure and loved travelling and holidays. We married in 2001 and then along came Liam in 2002 and Kyle in 2007, they also love travelling and adventure.
Having drove through Europe a few times, we decided that we needed more freedom and found that road travelling wasn't quite cutting it, so we looked into sailing and the rest is covered in our videos.
You want to know even more info? 🤔

    Fantastic to see an update from you guys! Thanks for keeping it real, down to earth and representing Yorkshire in the KZread sailing community! Might be worth stocking up on a few belts if you can find them a bit cheap enough as that didn't seem to last long at all for a new autopilot.

    Coming from Goole, its grand to hear the accent, all my uncles and aunties talk like that. Such a nice change from all the American You Tubers. I was also in the Navy stationed at Culdrose, so I recognised the streets of Newlyn, Penzance and Falmouth. The pub with the pirate on the roof is the Admiral Benbow which my brother in law used to own. Great video, keep em coming. The highs are just around the corner. Tony Hall

    It's amazing what lengths you'll go to get what you need and I find it's always best to turn adversity into 'an adventure' - hence fully understand the pint √. You certainly did right by getting it before setting off for France. I realise there's a time lag between the event on view and going live with the video, but I'd have very been happy to have got you an Autopilot drive belt and posted it to you for collection at agreed location. I live near Exeter with good access to Chandlers and Electronic suppliers. From experience I know how difficult it is to obscure source spare parts when your in distant harbours and with limited access to transport. Cheers

    I really enjoyed watching that, not because of your problems, but because of the way you dealt with them. Nothing that happened to you is new, I'm sure you know that, but let's just say it's "character building". The downs will always be there but being on a boat can give you unbelievable highs. My best one even after 40 years of sailing was 15 knots of wind on the beam, crossing the English Channel, night-time, WARM, SO clear, finding a star and keeping it just in line with a shroud, no compass staring,. It was just AMAZING and something you'll never experience ashore. Other brilliant times too but that one was just so special. You WILL get the highs and suddenly it will all make sense. Hurry up with the next video 😊👍

    Probably more our situation than Newlyn harbour to be honest Jason, the harbour master was great, when we told him about our journey to Falmouth he said you could've used my car (how nice is that) Don't think it helped because we'd just come from a brand spanking new marina Ireland. We did see the new lifeboat station, it looks a nice building. All the best Gav

    We were in the Bristol Channel around about the same time, I think. on our way to the Isles of Scilley. We didn't make it due to a halyard break and spend a few days climbing the mast in Padstow. Many don't experience the Atlantic swell after a storm - it lasts about three days and will give you 5M swells, even after the storm passes. It's frustrating to see that it doesn't come out on camera, so many don't see it; and you had it on the beam as well (Very rocky - We were beating into it, which is actually more comfortable) Well done on getting each other through the situations. Anyone can pull together in the good times, the really close teams pull together when the going gets tough. Please pass a high five from me to the whole family/crew.

  • @OverlandSea

    @OverlandSea

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Andrew Shame about the halyard, did you eventually make it? Your not kidding, the swell had built up and it never shows on camera. When we finally set off over the channel we had sustained 24-25knts gusting 35knts and the swell was the biggest we've experienced, we literally surfed the waves to France. Your right it's the harder times that either make you panic or pull together, thankfully we pulled together. Passed your high five on to Hannah and the boys. Sail safe and keep in touch Gav

    Hi Gav We changed our plans, sailed North to Barafundle Bay and spent a couple of nights on the South Wales coast and saving the Isles pf Scilley for another year. We didn't want to get there and rush back. I haven't published any video of this year's sailing, not sure if I will. I filmed an exercise on sail balancing that I might share. It was informative but maybe not entertaining. I managed to sail in a straight line without any autohelm or tiller movement for about 6 hours in a 25kt wind into that swell. I'd recommend you trying it, you may find it interesting and improve your sailing speed at the same time. Looking forward to the next video, Andrew
