Oh good. Was beginning to wonder if you had been able to make it ti France or were going to have to come back and have another go later! What do you mean sailing isn't all sunny skies, bright blue water and palm trees. Who knew? Good on you for showing it how it is. My (other) favourite sailing channel, The Adventurees of an Old Seadog, does that too and is one of the reasons I really like his channel. Anyway, good to see you enjoying France! Hi Andy, it certainly is busy, we pretty much held our course and held our nerve and kept a close eye on the ships. We cleaned the tank I actually got quite a few more chunks of the bug out. Couldn't agree more, can't wait for spring & summer.

I bought that gill men's jacket quite recently and after 3 months off shore racing it was torn to shreds. Small rips all over and the front right pocket hanging off. Would suggest musto br2 instead

In all honesty Simon, it's the only ones we could afford. We would've gone with Musto if we'd have had more money available, we were spending heaps on the boat upgrades at the time.

@@OverlandSea can relate I am an outdoor instructor so money is always a losing battle as kit is so expensive. Just keep an eye out on marine superstore and wetsuit outlet websites. I just now picked up musto br1 salloppets for £90. Keep posting. Really like your channel

Hi,on the hard in Falmouth at the moment, but was in Brittany in October and Ireland before that, I agree the shipping is crazy approaching France.Have a great sailing season.

Great video again guys, just a bit concerned that the diesel bug may be lingering in the tank, pipes & filters! We had the same issue and even though we cleaned the pickup pipe first, we ended up hauling out the tank and replacing all the filters! First step now would be to kill any remaining with a diesel treatment, before checking all the filters! Happy New Year and keep the vids coming 😀

Excellent news you get to France. Wondered what had happened as been a while. Any consolation our entrance to Brest was the same with no one answering the radio/phone and we then had to move too!

Good to see you arrived ok, as Patrick says the fas valves shut off in stb cabin is a real issue, I made a fuel polishing system to clean tank each year, expect you are in the Bavaris forum it's on there, good luck with your trip. Odysseus

Thanks Bill, we'll be changing the shut off valve asap. This is why we love the sailing community because there's so much help and advice available to take onboard. A fuel polisher is another good call, we've seen a couple of videos with homemade fuel polishers.

gav you picked the busy point to cross the chammel the better way to cross it in my expieriance is to go a littlefurther into the atlantic as ther is more room to manouver with less traffic as the Spanish traffic stays a bit closer to the French coast so the further out you go the less traffic you have to deal with in the western approaches to the chamel / oh and a quick bit nnof advice from a diesel specialist

Well done on your channel crossing. I feel for you with the diesel bug! I got it last season too with the engine cutting out through the narrows at the Kyles of Bute! Winter project was to build a twin pre filter for this season so that I can quickly switch over to a clean filter!

I built mine on the cheap with two Katsu CAV296 filters off ebay and a couple of two way taps. I figured with all the tank hoovering and treatment, it may still take another season before completely clean! Also, with this method you can inspect and change the pre filter while still running the engine.

Did the same overnight crossing in my boat in 2018 but anchored in Port Sall on the French side, awesome had to pass stern of a aircraft carrier about 3 in the morning.

Yes we had AIS, great for night sailing and fog.

it is called sludge by some it is actually a wax that is a part of the fuel / when diesel gets cold the wax gets thicker

There's every chance we will be Bill, we plan on going to La Rochelle. Would be nice to catch up.

I have made that Channel crossing several times ---- and I can assure, it is occasionally a gentle, pleasant passage with blue skies and warm sunshine. You have completed a rite of passage. :-) One other point of warning…….your fuel pick-up is a great place for a diesel bug blockage, but even worse is the fuel shut-off valve mounted on the bulkhead. That valve is notorious for blockages (forums) as it has a very, very small orifice. I changed mine completely to put one in with a much larger (normal) orifice. I've had no problems in the 2 years since. Fair winds.

Thanks Patrick, we have seen you cross it in your videos and also remember the video where you had the fuel issue. Thats a good heads up regarding the shut off valve, I'll try and find one with a larger opening. We wanted to get to La-Rochelle for winter but ran out of time, hence the reason we are in Brest. We've have friends who've done the coastal route and said it was something not be rushed because there's some stunning places and sights to see. She's still moored up in Brest until March.

Echoing everyone's congratulations and best wishes. Nice to see Patrick still around. Just one thing I would caution against. When you showed the screenshot of the vessels on ais you were the stand on vessel regardless of sailing or motoring. IF the watch keepers had been doing their jobs properly they would have either chosen to perhaps power up to pass ahead or nudge to starboard to pass astern of you. I've seen it happen. Six large boats on the horizon,me not sure what to do, then two obviously were going to pass ahead, two behind and the other two actually changed to pass behind. Problem is, if you then change course to pass behind them you confuse the total picture. I KNOW it's difficult to decide to stand on but don't fall into the trap of ALWAYS planning to steer round the back of them. Anyway, you've made it across and I just hope that 2020 brings you much enjoyment. Listening to you as a family unit I'm sure you will have a great time 😊❤️

Happy new year mate. In those AIS shots we didn't change course, we managed to get the timings right to thread through the ships. When we got closer to France the were further apart and not so many of them, so where possible we'd go around the stern if they were fairly close. I appreciate the advice, we are always looking at learning from those with more experience 👍🏻 All the best for this year.

We keep one in the cockpit when sailing, your right though they are worth having. We mainly use it to check we aren't on a collision course.

Just watched and re lived the dramas after following you live on the tracker at the time. We were thinking that this part of the journey can be the best or the worst bit down to the Med. But the sailing along this next part of the coast is stunning and not to be hurried. Thanks for the plug guy's and have a great year in 2020. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.

Great video, want you guys to stay safe so you ca make more. Bit of a query. Video shows safety tether clipped on to pushpit transom gate guard wires. Not sure if it’s clipped for storage or you are using it as a clip on point. In using as a clip on point, just some advice. They are not designed for it. Whilst the wire itself may be ok, the fixings are likely to fail through the physics of weight and momentum. Likewise the pull rings can get caught in clothing as you are being thrown around in sea states and undo the quick release shackle and then if you get hit by another and you go over, you are stuffed. I’ve seen it happen before. Your Bavaria is not too bad has it has quite a small transom gate, but on more modern craft like Dufour and Hanse, that have a fat arse and large transom. Stay safe guys.

Thanks Bob, well spotted regarding the safety tether, it’s only there for storing when we’ve unclipped ourselves the other end is fastened to the designated tether point low down at the helm. I do appreciate your concern, especially if we had been using it to to tether from because like you rightly say it would definitely give way.

That "little blob" is not alone and it's the fungus in that water layer that's the problem, not the moisture itself. Likely to be a whole layer of that muck at the bottom of the tank and it takes a bit of moving. You mentioned Patrick Laine's video on his fuel problem. Did you see his video on "fuel polishing" as well? I actually bypassed Brest when I sailed alone across Biscay a short while back, when heavy seas actually demolished two of my portlights (I was heading to Plymouth) because I'd be entering what was a new and complex port to me in the dark with adverse seas and wind - just seemed too complicated at the time. I went to Guernsey instead, to put the conditions on a different quarter. Why I say that, when then continuing on to Gosport about a month ago, I found it far easier to dodge ships with just a reefed main and the engine as I had far greater control over my speed that way - I could slow up much more easily if I had to. Also curious, what was you strategy regarding the Traffic Separation Zone NW of Brest? I kept totally east of it.

Your right Ian that Blob wasn't alone when cleaning the fuel system there was quite a bit more sat at the bottom of the tank. We did see Patrick's fuel polishing video, there's been a few others make videos on fuel polishing too. Sounds like you made the right decision to bypass Brest, it's never great entering a foreign marina in the day but we had no choice, we'd planned to be there in daylight but the wind died and with the engine playing up we had no choice. We had the main reefed all the way over the channel which is a lesson we learnt the hard way when sailing up to Whitehaven. From that lesson we always reef on a night passage. We kept well East of the TSS. Thanks for watching.

When you said you had to get there before high tide your prononciation sounded like before "I died". Given the waves that's what I thought you meant

I hope so , not easy not cheap, What's the plan on the fuel tank, if you have bug in there , dearly only one solution, clean it out, sedatives won't remove it, your tank is very flat, so as soon as you go to sea , you churn up the clergy mess , and it will stop, I have had to deal with it many times , keep smiling it's a normal thing, you have great places ahead of you, il watch out for your next chapter,

Yes that's the plan David, just see how far South or into the Med we can get. Your right it isn't cheap or easy, the problem we have is getting enough time from work/school. We clean the tank, it's got a nice big access hatch at the top of the tank that the previous owners put in. We'll also be putting the debugging agent in when we fill up in future. @@OverlandSea encourages make it a bit cheaper, I recommend northern Spain, esp coruna, has airport, then round to baiona, Vigo, a great sheltered area to explore, but sadly, the water isn't Greece, that's many many miles away, get to Spain, see what happens to brexit, you may get limited on how long you can stay in Europe, Sail safe ,

We decided we would make the video because it's real and how we felt, this is why I put the disclaimer at the start of the video. ...... you did great, you seemed totally unfazed by the whole escapade, bit tired I'd guess you were .... re the diesel bug, is it in the tank and it accumulated there in the pick-up pipe because there is a restriction because of the elbow, just a question that went through the old grey matter ..... pretty amazing the timbers in those old ships as you said, thx for sharing that part with us .... Thanks Peter, the boat handled the swell amazingly which helped put us at ease... not going to lie, there were times that we question what we were doing in the middle of the English channel at night in the middle of those large ships, in big swell with a broken engine hehe I'd check the pre-filter which was clear and changed out the secondary filter and the engine ran great for a couple of hours so I knew something was wrong before the pre-filter and like you say the sharp 90 degree bend at the top of the pickup pipe caught the obstruction. The tank is clean now so fingers crossed we'll be good from now on. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Peter. All the best Gav
