Destination Mediterranean via Whitehaven - Greystones - Newlyn

Season 2 Episode 9
Destination Mediterranean
📹 VIDEO DESCRIPTION:In this episode we finish the last of our boat jobs before setting sail and heading towards the Mediterranean, we leave Whitehaven Marina for Greystones Marina in Ireland.
We take the train to explore Dublin before Gav dives in the water to clean the prop. After leaving Greystones Marina we head for a three day passage to Brest in France until we encounter some large swell at lands end (UK) which breaks the autopilot and the engine begins to lose power.
We met some subscribers in Greystones and had a few drinks and shared sailing stories with them. Thanks Mark & Anne best of luck with your racing.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 ABOUT THE FOUR OF US:
Gav & Hannah met back in 1996 on a blind date, we both had a real zest for adventure and loved travelling and holidays. We married in 2001 and then along came Liam in 2002 and Kyle in 2007, they also love travelling and adventure.
Having drove through Europe a few times, we decided that we needed more freedom and found that road travelling wasn't quite cutting it, so we looked into sailing and the rest is covered in our videos.
You want to know even more info? 🤔
OK OK
Gav is a builder and enjoys playing football(soccer) and walking & exploring, he also sometimes nerds out and plays the xbox.
Hannah is a medical secretary at the local hospital and enjoys walking & exploring and spending time with family, she also absolutely loves to find time to read her kindle.
Liam is an apprentice shopfitter/joiner and loves anything to do with being outdoors including fishing, hunting, camping and walking.
Kyle is currently in secondary school and he also loves to play football(soccer) he also loves being outdoors and playing on his xbox.

To have prepared the boat and crew, shot the footage and rendered the video and uploaded it so close to real time is an amazing achievement. No one is ever completely ready to set off on a voyage. There are always things ‘ideally’ to be done and it’s an anxious and uncertain moment to say ‘right we’re off’. So well done. Hope Kyle’s was no too badly affected by the ‘choppy’ conditions encountered on your first leg of the trip. Weather for the next few days looks unsettled in western approaches, so good luck. It takes a while for the crew to ‘get their sea legs’, give yourselves plenty of time. Best wishes.

It feels like we've been preparing for this forever, in fact it's been a year of preparation and we still weren't 100% ready, mainly because things are so expensive when your starting from scratch. We had a bad weather day in Ireland so we got the video done and out because it'd been so long since we'd released a video. Kyle were OK and in fact none of us ever felt ill, we took the Studgeron tablets just in case. We have managed to cross the channel now, which you'll see in the next episode. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Gav

Well done guys. The adventure begins. Half of the excitement is all the planning and the endless dreaming of the eventual adventure, but the time has finally arrived, and the adventure begins. I'm sure the engine will just be trivial, but you've made the right call by returning to England. I look forward to the next episode. All the best to all of you. Kind regards Daryl.

Hey Daryl Thanks you are right the planning is half the excitement and when it was time to head off, that excitement turned to a nervous energy but in all honesty I think you need that to keep you on your toes. Hello all. You may already know this, but having assisted ferrying the same boat as yours from P'mouth down to Corunna, mostly with strong winds from astern - we discovered that she would run much easier and was much easier and less stressful to control with the main put away and the genoa poled out on a whisker pole (very worthwhile investment if you don't have one already). It was so much easier on boat and crew, and took all the anxiety of an accidental gybe (especially running at night) out of the equation. Give it a try next time you have a downhill run. Stay safe.

Egg whites, bloody egg whites who told us about that load of bo£$ock$ hehe. Actually our friends in Greece tried it and dived the prop two months later and there wasn't anything at all on the prop. To be honest nearly everyone you speak to in Whitehaven have had the worm cast on the prop no matter what you use. The good news is that the sail drive leg is perfectly fine with the antifoal 🤦‍♂️ I spoke to international about it and they said it should be ok just use the correct stuff next time. Think becasue its not directly on the aluminium its ok, it's powder coated. Yeh we have seen the same thing with people with lovely boats and never leaving the marina not even for a day sail. Looking forward to the next vid. P.S. With regard to your fuel, I started using Marine 16 about 3 years ago, small doses, preventative only, as I had seen three boats towed into French Marinas with blockage. One was put alongside us so I got to hear about “shock treatment” I “think” that the French engineer put in a mega-dose and then came back the next day and somehow got the gunge from the bottom of the tank but I couldn’t see how..Might be worth researching. This guy (absolutely brilliant videos) built his own polisher. Bit of a faff to carry round with you but I like his pre-filters idea. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dYynu6RyocKtj5M.html Best of luck. Where are you going to keep the boat in France for the winter? I’ve heard great things of La Roche-Bernard. Ummm.not sure about having the radar blasting you with microwaves at head height. Wouldn't AIS and a lookout be sufficient for the channel? You can always get the radar properly mounted up the mast in the Med. I think I wouldn't switch it on unless it was imperative.

  • @OverlandSea

    @OverlandSea

It's a good shout that MaL and it were only mounted there very temporarily incase any fog came in and caught us out, we didn't use the radar except for the initial test. We were sat way below the radar for the test so it would be like having the radar on a stern pole and being stood in the cockpit. I'm not daft but when you've run out of budget you've got to improvise and take all the precautions to ensure we are all safe. cheers Gav
