Sailing In A Gale Aboard A Hans Christian 33
Ойын-сауық
When we cast off aboard S/V Duchess the winds were blowing out the west at 22kts with gusts to 27kts; challenging but nothing a robustly built HC33 couldn't handle. We headed north from Herring Bay towards the Bay Bridge and the winds continued to accelerate as we made great time under staysail and genoa alone. By the time we reached Thomas Point Light the winds were sustained in the high 20's with gusts as high as 37 kts and the Coast Guard was issuing Gale Warnings for the Upper Chesapeake Bay. We furled the staysail and made the tack for the return to Herring Bay. About 3 miles short of our destination a large gust blew out the genoa. With sailcloth flapping all over the place, it took a concerted team effort to get the remnants furled. In the end, S/V Duchess proved completely up to the challenge taking on the storm and keeping her crew safe without even the hint of stress. It was a very exhilarating day on the water and a big thank you goes out to Captain Bruce for taking us on a wild ride aboard S/V Duchess!

I'm glad you and your ship came back from those horrific conditions. May the sailors forever remember this perilous day. God bless the bravery of you, and the seaworthiness of your ship. May I add that the music fits the terrifying weather perfectly. Jokes aside, beautiful boat. It looks like a fun day out there.

Only time I sailed in a gale was on the Chesapeake. Cutter rigged, so had only the staysail and a reefed main up. Loved it. (Cabo Rico 38).

I'm sailing with you. Love watching the water.
Great video. Love the action feeling in it. Thanks for sharing. Fair winds from Norway 🇳🇴
I am very excited I am going to buy a Hans Christen at the end of next year. They seem to be a Grand boat and I have been looking a long time. If was a toss up between a Dutch Sailing Barge and Hans Christen. I have been a Merchant Marine most of my life now and after fifteen years of working off the West Africa African Coast I wanted something to show for it. A Hans Christen is just the ticket. Sail or no sail life would be good. Thinking of the Great Loop.

I really lov the hans christians. Such handsome boats
lovely day for a sail, I'd call that a mainsail , one reef and working jib kind of day. Keeping the main and a jib will balance the boat.
I can almost feel my hands doing your bright work.. Subscribed and thumbs up..
Very nice boat! We have a blue water cruiser as well and find in those conditions she's much better balanced with a reefed main and staysail. She'll develop more power and punch through the waves better. Looks like at the end of the video there was some sail damage. If new sails are needed that would help out performance.
A heavy application of music detracts from sailing videos. You can always mute the sound, but then you miss what little wind and water sounds are eeking past the blasting music. Nice boat .
Fun ride! Beautiful vessel!
Cool, I used to sail my Westsail 32 out of Herrington Harbour North about 10 years ago.
Couldn't help but catching your excellent video of "Duchess" which I took delivery of in 1987. She looks as beautiful as the day she came off the trailer in Falmouth MA. The only recognition I can make is that I had the Nav station configured on the starboard side and removed the bunk that would have been there, plus the fact that she was delivered with a blue hull and was the star of the harbor in Mystic CT where we had her moored. Recall many wonderful hours sailing New England waters before we had to sell her in 1994. Last I knew she was heading to the Bahama's.
I really enjoyed that. Nicely done.

After launching "Duchess" in '87 in Falmouth MA and sailing her throughout New England waters for several years I lost track of her as she was heading to the Bahamas. Your video brought back many exciting moments and it was awesome to see she can still handle the "weather"

My chance here to ask the two owners of Duchess , would you think she is the right boat for me and my wife to take across the Atlantic ? From Canaries to Bahamas from Panama to Australia back to UK not yours obviously lol, but you never know In the future she may be for sale. Seriously I was looking at a bigger boat but I don't know this boats look like really nice liveaboards

Very nice boat!
Look at the flag at the end of the sea wall at 33 seconds in.... And yes I agree with the comment below, using the Mainsail, even double reeled, balances the boat better, and takes strain off the rigging.
An exceptional boat is the queen who got you thru repeated storms, gales and crossings of 10, 35 and 55 days.
Fantastic footage! I think I got spray on my face.

+S/V Southern Lady It was a fun day on the Bay!
Nice day for a sail, in fact heavy displacement boats with full keels need some wind and not being very rough out there you can get them to move quite nicely. The boat like this can handle way more seas and wind than this. (previous owner of 1971 Morgan 40 Classic)
Hans Christians are sailboats for the sailor!!
Your the only notification bell I've turned on.
No gale here, possibly force 5. Try sailing offshore in 20-25’ seas with the top 1 1/2 blowing off in a spray, not foaming yet but spray, and you’re surfing down the wave fronts. Now there’s something to get excited about. I’d have the main up with a reef for better balance
Nice yacht. World love to have someone show and describe the interior with all the storage.

Have a look at Sailing Vessel Prism's You Tube Channel. They are cruising on an HC33T and just recently did a terrific video tour of theirs. Very in-depth.
Love your vids, can anyone tell me about the soundtrack? Loved the music
force 4 is a yachtsmans gale. You may be interested to know that a main sail gives a lot more structural strength to your rig. Less chance of a fracture caused by loads unevenly distributed through the mast. Happy sailing.

Ha,ha. Considered calm seas and moderate wind here off Oahu. Plus no Kaiwi channel current 😂😂 Put that mainsail up bruddah!
A GALE ? LOL....that was a betty.
Great video. Excellent music!
Wow, she sails well with only head sails. This is the kind of weather we get on San Francisco Bay every summer afternoon...big fun. Does she get much weather helm, especially with the main up? Cheers

We are planning on selling the family cottage and waiting to get out part out of it. Getting tired of cottage life because you cannot control who your neighbours are. With a large enough yacht you will always have waterfront property and if get intrusive neighbours you can always move. There are also many less door knockers and visitors on a yacht if it is anchored in a secluded cove somewhere private. Society is getting busier every summer and that is getting bothersome.
Beautiful boats, you stated early on that you put a reef in the main but chose not to hoist (I didnt read through all the comments) but she will handle more than you can by all means. I usually run my boat through some hard conditions once or twice a year and I am never disappointed (I have a Ranger 33; not as stout as this lady). I would enjoy a sail on a Hans in these conditions though
Where’s the gale ? Looks like a nice days sailing !

Ha ! Mamaroneck we're practically neighbors. What kind of speeds did you make ?
Is it better to sail in a storm with a storm jib or a storm trisail/reefed main? Sails on the main tends to turn you windward and into the waves while the jib will tend to turn you away from the wind broaching the waves... Also those weren't Gail conditions. Just a brisk Sunny day with scattered clouds. Dramatic music does not a storm make.

What would we all have given for just one protracted look at the instruments, Oh Well!
👍
These sailboats will handle much more of a blow than shown in this video but it looked like a fun day otherwise.
Look like a peaceful sail so what’s the deal with that music good Lord
Great footage but info like speed ect would be nice.

+High voltage Lineman2019 she handled very well. The only criticism I had is that her forward bow/hull is quite wide and blunt and as such she occasionally pounds waves that my Cabo Rico would just slice through.

The U.S. National Weather Service defines a gale as 34-47 knots of sustained surface winds. We were hove to for about 10 hours off Cape Hatteras in that sort of wind. Not bragging, but not exaggerating, either.
Gale? You mean clickbait?
...what gale? A gale is 35 to 40 knots of wind...
