Sailing from Florida to Maryland in a Hans Christian 33

Музыка

Delivery Trip by new owner (me) in 2017 in a Hans Christian 33, SV DRAGONQUEST. This was my first long sailing trip and my first offshore sailing experience. About half the trip was on the ICW / Chesapeake Bay, the other half (about 400 miles) was offshore. It took place between April 29 and June 21. Apologies for the crude editing.

    The boat looks great. I really like the self-tacking staysail and the motion in general. Also, it's amazing how much room these boats have for a 33. People snark about HCs being slow but who needs to abbreviate the time spent sailing on such a boat.

    Thanks Tim. Yeah, the feel really roomy for their hull length and the Pullman berth is very comfy for a couple although the quarterberth is tight for two guests.

    risa bear hi guys, these boats are not slow at all! Sure they need lots of air to reach their max speed but I’ve done 8 knots on a beam reach going against the current and with 10-15 knot winds. Have the video to prove it! They are incredible boats for any size. The fact that you have the comfort and the performance that you get on a 33’ boat is truly remarkable! Ives designed a beautiful, practical and comfortable boat. We went looking for a bigger boat (wife is a size queen lol) and we just didn’t find anything that could replace her. Even the famous Baba 40 didn’t measure to the HC built quality.....so we passed! 😎 I’m probably talking to myself here lol.....anyway, great video! Word of advice, get rid of the Yanmar 3Q.....buy a Beta Marine 35 direct from England and you’ll save about half the price here in the States! 👍🏻

    Lived on mine from 1986-94 in Sausalito. Sailed up from LA and many trips off SF. Yes, under 10 knots of wind not so great. But at typical Bay Area winds 25 and more it was all sails up and going fast while lighter boats reefed and couldn’t make any progress against the big swells and chop.

    I'm a bit late to this party but hello anyway from Australia... I have an HC 43T with a self tacking staysail on a boom like yours and I love it. Mine was christened DRAGONLADY. Many that came out of the KING DRAGON shipyard in Taiwan had "DRAGON" in their name I believe. Hope you're still loving your boat mate.

    Thanks for the comment! Yes, I’m still loving her. We had another adventure up the northeast coast of the US in 2019 and did a major refit on her in 2020-21. I did eventually replace the self tacking staysail though. The boom was cracked. It trims better now, but it is more work in a tack or jibe! Enjoy your coming sailing season down under. Fair winds.

    Hello and thank you for sharing your video, I am looking for inside and advice. I am considering buying a 33 my self. The hull I am interested in is Rigged mid boom sheeted. After having some sailing time with your boat, would you have any insight as to whether this is an ok setup to sail this vessel?

  • @121point5

    @121point5

    Hi Chris, they are wonderful boats. Mid-boom sheeting would be much more convenient than having the sheet at the back of the cockpit. I would make sure the traveler installation is sturdy and reinforce it if needed. Good luck on your search!

    Hey Andy! I love the new boat! Sails well, although doesn't point very high with the current rig. She can reach and go downwind beautifully though, and with full sail in 20 kts+ when the lighter boats are pressed. Very comfortable boat, beautiful woodwork inside and out. We are currently rehabbing the exterior teak, which is a lot of work.

    Great to hear that you are enjoying your new sailboat!! Yes they are great boats, great quality. Wife and I have been looking at larger sailboats, we looked at a Ta Shing Baba 40 in San Fran......can not compare to the quality of the HC sailboats. Everybody raves about these Ta Shing made boats and honestly, ours are ten times better built!! The more boats we see, the more we like our 33 lol

    Just curious - why didn't you stay outside until at least Norfolk? I brought my new-to-me CD Typhoon Senior (22') up the ICW from Southport to Norfolk, only because I wasn't comfortable with its condition. I would think an HC 33T (my new "need to have" boat) would have been more than up to the task?

  • @121point5

    It was. We weren’t. The waters off south Florida are the edge of the Gulf Stream. It was early spring and the weather was unsettled. Wind in the low 20s off the aft starboard quarter, waves on the beam. Other waves from two different directions made the motion really irregular, like a washing machine. The boat was rolling something awful that first night unless we bore away toward the coast of Florida, off course. We were miserable. So we came in. Winds were higher the next few days, plus a big storm front sweeping down out of the NW. we had the option of sitting and waiting or trying to make some distance north in the ICW. In retrospect, might have been better to wait because of the added distance from following the coast, but the weather windows had been so short I thought I might have to wait forever.

    I am looking at the HC 33 for a second liveaboard and I’m sure it will feel like a mansion compared to my current Catalina 27. The only thing that bothers me about them is the sail to displacement ratio. Sailboat data has the sail area listed as 600sq ft which seems very low. Can you confirm or correct that number? Also you mention her inability to point into wind well with her current rig. What would you change to help correct that or is that just a fact of life with these boats? Also, is there anything else that you don’t like about the boat now that you’ve had her a while? My current top 4 to look at are HC 33, Baba 35, Tayana 37 and Cabo Rico 38..

    121point5 well yeah she's not a racer and I am looking for a blue water boat but I'm going to have to finance for about 4 years here on Lake Erie before cruising her into the sunset. That's 4 years of being left in the dust in winds under 15 knots I presume.
