I'm halfway through 48 Laws of Power. I started reading it per your recommendation. And I love it! Greene certainly doesn't beat around the bush. I intend to start reading your books very soon. You might want to check out Man’s Search for Himself by Rollo May. Written in the 1950s, but extremely relevant to our modern world, and blows away any other book on the self-help genre, including Peterson.

Very inspiring as always! I'm reading Lives of the Stoics right now, an amazing history of the leaders of the Stoic school of philosophy - put Ryan Holiday in the chapter after Marcus Aurelius because you are carrying the torch with incredible courage, justice, temperance and wisdom!

Once again, thank you so much Ryan. I'm very grateful for your daily stoic emails, the books you write, and the videos you create. I'm particularly grateful for this video and your book recommendations. I've already read a few and they've been inspiring and extremely thought provoking. Since I've been introduced to you and Stoicism, I have been taking huge steps forward in a life I thought would end by the age of 25. I found The War of Art and your book The Obstacle is The Way to be invaluable resources that I will be picking up again and again for however long I've got left. Memento Mori and Amor Fati 👍

Thank you very much for this list. You reminded me that I’ve been wanting to get my hands on the war of art for a long time and now I’m reminded that I have to read it. I also don’t have a copy of meditations of my own, is there a specific version from a publisher or specific copy that you would recommend over others? I have slightly changed the quote to work for me, Strictness and tolerance go hand in hand be strict with yourself and tolerant with others. Stoicism is really helping me it's a struggle but I would rather struggle with something rather than be angry at everything. Listen to your videos every day and even started journaling which was alien to me. Enjoy the day hope your all well.

This is to so love the truth that one relinquishes all the non-sense -- the tangential thought, the impulsivity of emotion and the regressive desire driven habits that lend themselves to an ineptitude, as to displace the actualities of our attentive mind. To the author of this web-sight please bear in mind what my father said long ago: "Those who do are criticized."

I highly recommend "Culture Jam: How to Reverse America's Suicidal Consumer Binge, and Why We Must" by Kalle Lasn. Kind of in the same vain as Fight Club but not fiction

Meditations is a transformative book. My own personal journal has become something of an ode to it.

I use the slip box method to remember what I read. I think Ryan uses the same method. Tho his box is giant tote, mine is a small metal index box off of Amazon.

I say try all the ideas if trying will not hurt you or others……keep the ones that work for You. Ideas are just ideas not objective truth, some will work for you and others will not. As a great man once said “confidence comes with Action.”

I like cultural diversity, not racial diversity. I believe that human beings shouldn't go around talking about race at all. It should be a useless, unspoken subject. Discussion about politics and race creates more division and hate than good. Call me a fascist if you want, but I 100% believe that the world would be a better place if we could all stop mentioning race and politics as much.

Ryan, just an observation.....do you have personal relationships that benefit from your extremely passionate drive for stoicism? You clearly practice it every hour of your day.....is there room for spontaneity with for example your wife? I am 67, well-read and travelled and have just left a relationship after 31 years.....I wonder if being a stoic could have changed my course in life? Keen to read any response......

Unfortunately, the town is too small for a bookstore to work unless it is run as a hobby by a wealthy person.

Hello Ryan -- Your work on the Daily Stoic offers viewers a broad range of thinking about stoicism as a foundational approach to life. In these efforts, you come across as a sincere and avid reader on this topic. However, on the topic of power and influence, your promotion of the Robert Greene book "The 48 Laws of Power" is troubling. Despite your summary comments to the contrary, Greene provides a cynical and twisted view of the realities of power. Reading these deplorable ideas as a means of understanding the "evil doers" in this world and how best to contend with them is frankly naïve. Years ago, I came across this highly controversial publication and was so concerned after reading it that I posted my detailed review on Amazon. Several years later, I also posted some follow-up commentary (complete review below). I trust these ideas may offer you and your followers some cause for pause on this subject. Perhaps, my remarks may also provide you with the opportunity to temper your advocacy of this unfortunate work. Shame On Those Who Applaud These Ideas! Reviewed July 5, 2006 As a retired CEO and now university professor, I cannot disagree more strongly with the premise of this book and the tactics promoted within. The ideas espoused here are ruthless, amoral, manipulative nonsense -- a dose of pure utilitarianism for the stupid and greedy. Glaring examples of this twisted ethos were apparent in the management teams at Enron, Tyco, Worldcom, Arthur Anderson, Adelphia, and a host of other dysfunctional corporations. The unsustainable paths these organizations chose, and the disastrous outcomes that resulted, exemplify the distorted ideas celebrated in this sadly popular writing. Once again, Greene reminds us that no social question is so complex that a simple-minded solution can't be offered. For those interested in reading works on this subject with substance, I can recommend the following: * "Power, Influence and Persuasion" by Harvard Business School Press & Society for Human Resource Management * "Power and Influence" by John P. Kotter (at Harvard) * "Managing with Power: Politics and Influence in Organizations" by Jeffrey Pfeffer (at Stanford) * "Power in Organizations" by Jeffrey Pfeffer (at Stanford) Addendum March 7, 2012: My original review was written six years ago. From the many comments posted, my remarks have obviously generated numerous responses -- some rather thoughtful and supportive, others less so. From these postings, it seems that many folks simply don't get it... and perhaps don't want to get it. Yes, it is indeed possible and certainly preferable to use influence with integrity. Rational and sincere persuasion always trumps raw coercion. It is an established sociological fact that all our individual and collective actions carry with them ethical obligations and ethical consequences. "Might for right" is ultimately far more powerful and sustainable than "might makes right." Given the global events and economic catastrophes of these six intervening years, it is ironic that so many folks continue to reject these notions and hold on so fervently to their dog-eat-dog ethics (perhaps too much FOX News)? It is truly unfortunate that Greene's book offers little more than an unsophisticated rehash of the self-serving and empty ethics put forward over 500 years ago by Niccolo Machiavelli in his renaissance publication "The Prince." At the time, these ideas were considered radical, defiant, irresponsible and nonsensical and ultimately cost Machiavelli his life. Today's media saturates us with these same ethics as held by Bernie Madoff, Dick Cheney, Jack Abramoff, Tom Delay, Lehman Brothers, AIG and the entire political theater involved in our current ethical and economic debacle. Those who so belligerently subscribe to Greene's distorted 48 laws might want to ask themselves that famous question, "How's that working for ya'?"

One of the most helpful and practical books that could be added is Non violent communication by Marshall Rosenberg. Power “with” others not “over” others is one of his themes Also in any given moment hold others needs as important as your own and act accordingly. One of my mentors gave me a road map that has helped First strive for non injury ,try not to harm others After this aim higher actually manifest kindness And then love. In thoughts words and deeds. It’s embarrassingly difficult 😂

Haha, 48 Laws of Power. Rightly said, people who are repulsed by it need it most. I really love listening to Robert Greene but I find it hard to read 48 Laws of Power without finding the book manipulative. My challenge is finding the balance between KNOWING how Power is used to manipulate, vs getting paranoid and being suspicious of anyone who has Power.

They were persecuted. To say they still are insane. And their success totally undermines the narrative of mistreatment leading to social pathology.

The Blue Ocean one I read and don't agree with. There's literal contradictory advice telling you that if you want to validate a product, e.g., pat flynn, you need to go to where there's already a market or that proves theres no demand

Books are personal, no need to tell others what to read!

there are a lot of books out there, and even if we read 24/7 we couldn't read 1% of them. So you must choose wisely, and if someone recommends a book they have spent the time to determine is good, we should appreciate it

I thought "The Catcher in the Rye" by J. D. Salinger was a great book.

I read 48 Laws perhaps 10 years ago. Greene is an excellent writer.

Actually reading Fight Club right now! Quite a bit different than the movie.

In recent years my educational reading as been formed of, Simon Sinek, Robert Greene - and a certain Ryan Holiday. There is one book outside of the these authors that truly changed my thinking about my direction in life, and what I actually wanted - that book is: Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life by Luke Burgis. Trust me it helped me find the focus, find my direction, and in combination with Ryan's work allowed me to find new work, happiness, and a better understanding of me.
