RVK Newscast #93: An Incredible Lava Flow Break Out Of The Mountain & Melt The Snowy Ground

In this edition, we visited the newest fissure in the Fagradalsfjall’s volcanic system and witnessed an amazing event when the top of the volcano broke and the lava tide streamed down claiming the land all around where we had stood but minutes before. You'll see a unique images of the event, when the lava streamed down melting snow and eating up the ground. We also visited the dwarfish third fissure. Shortly after we left the area, a fourth fissure came up between number 2 and 3. All this and more in the Reykjavík Newscast.

    Indeed, I love the camera work and the enthusiasm shown, it is like being up there with your best friend. Although every time the Grapevine goes up there a new volcano forms shortly after. I think they must have very heaving hiking boots and they are causing new fissures with all their stomping about ! :)

  • @mikerichards6065

    @mikerichards6065

    The technical explanation for why this is an odd eruption is that the magma is very 'primitive'. Which means that it has only just separated from the solid Mantle rather than hanging around in a magma chamber somewhere in the Crust. The magma is very rich in olivine and is close in composition to a rock called picrite. It is also *really* hot - about 1200C. As it rises through the Crust, it is passing through rocks with lower melting points which means the magma is eroding the channels, so more magma can come up. As more magma rises, it reduces pressure on the hot, solid Mantle. Lowering pressure but keeping the temperature the same, means that some of the Mantle melts, producing more magma, which rises up, reducing pressure, more melting... So this eruption could go on for a very long time. Perhaps even long enough for us to get out of lockdown!

    This is the best video footage yet of this most spectacular geologic event. Your reportage is truly excellent. Your cameraman is doing a wonderful job capturing the event. Your drone footage was absolutely stunning. Watching this at 5.00am in the morning on my 75"TV is almost as mesmerising as being there which I had the privilege of doing back in 1985 on a modelling assignment, where I spent an entire Saturday evening watching super 8 footage of someone's videos of the volcanoes of Iceland. That memory has stuck with me ever since and your continuous footage since the start of this current series of eruptions has me mesmerised again. Greetings from the Train Lord in South Australia. Keep up the good work. Well done again!

    Thank you so much for not over-sensationalizing your videos or titles...truly appreciated. Another channel titled it "UNBELIEVABLE! MASSIVE ERUPTION" And one of the first things you say is that it's the smallest volcano you have ever seen. 💪👏👏👏

I would literally happily watch you present drying paint with your inimitable style, but these stunning casts you are doing...ambassador, you are spoiling us! Highlight for me was "We got this small bastard here..." Just fantastic, love you guys and the whole Grapevine team! 😍🇮🇸🌋📰

    I know he's probably used to this, but I don't understand how you can just casually stroll by "mini-me" as it's actively spewing lava and not just be speechless ❤️

    What a weird and awesome and scary idea that you were maybe the last person to walk on some of that soil before it was covered in lava... never to be touched again by humans. Gosh!

    This has got to be my favourite Grapevine newscast - and that says a whooole lot! I stumbled upon The Reykjavik Grapevine while researching before going to Iceland for a fly over of the Holuhraun/Bardarbunga eruption 2014, and have followed you guys ever since. The enthusiasm, humour and warm spirit always speaks to me, and having you right there for the glorious events that this eruption has (in store...) for us, I am very grateful for, so: Thank You
