@the Teo Do you or the commenter above have no historical recollection of the SU-25 over Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion. Them and the Hind were what made the Mujahadeen go back into the mountains, they literally have quotes like, "if you have anything less then 57 mm weapon don't bother shooting at them".

In Afghanistan the Soviets learned to place armor plate between the engines of the Su-25 and that cut losses dramatically.

Actually, it was lessons-learned from the Afghan occupation that helped them rig this bird up for a survivable, front-line mission. That, and the fact that Ilyushin did in WWII with the Sturmovik..I mean, when the Nazis call a Russian plane "Black Death" (schwarzer Tod),..you've got something!

Su-25 was designed not only to sustain ground fire, but also to do so in a heavily contested scenario, that's why it is well armoured AND pretty fast

Anti air missiles are generally not design to hit the target i.e make direct contact. Most types detonate in proximity of the target spraying fragments into it. Protecting a plane against fragments is "simply" a matter of armour

it didnt endure a direct hit, contrary to popular belief anti air missiles are proximity based fuses not impact fused. Which means a armored jet can shrug off a hit or two before it is shot down, in this case it seems to have gone off near the fuselage of the main body, which is usually the most armored. A direct hit from a radar lock would shot it down in one hit if it takes the hit in that same spot.

@Schmidtka Productions Warplanes ARE designed to get hit. A-10s and F-15s have been known to limp home with one wing missing. Also MANPADs like Stingers have relatively little explosive power compared to a SAM. A lot depends on luck.

Even back in WW2 there are images of B-17 bombers completely blown to hell that managed to make it back. Some planes just designed to take a beating.

Very well engineered machine. The main thing to keep in mind is that it didn't just survive, but came out of that well enough to continue the attack run and return home. Often times AA, even machine gunfire is to force pilots to abort an attack or miss. Of course the frogfoot didn't abort, although we don't know if the attack landed on its intended target. Additionally, it will be out of service for awhile until it is repaired. So the MANPAD still succeeded to some extent.

The frogfoot didnt abort because it has no RWR threat. It didn't even know what had happened because the missile was fired from its rear. Reality. Any pilot would've still fired its ordenance in that instance.

This kind of stuff makes it so frustrating that Putin and his people always claim to feel they don’t get respect. Like, I’ve got mad respect for Russian/former Soviet engineering and military skill, as does basically anyone who’s attained some level of familiarity with it. Can’t say the same about all of the West with stuff like the Germany army’s current pathetic state, other NATO members skimping out on meeting the basic investment percentage, or others like China with their junk tanks and aircraft which even poor African countries don’t want lol. @@n2eman192 considering that MANPADs are IR guided, RWR will NOT give you any warning anyway. Unless you have MAWS onboard, which frogfoots dont have iirc.

Manpads aren't powerful enough to take down relatively armoured attack jet unless you get a close hit or hit sensitive parts. Same with the Hind. I've seen it take an RPG to the side and continue flying somewhere a few years back on KZread. Impressive stuff.

@@XXXXXXXXXO What part of Close Air Support is not clicking for you? That is what this particular plane is designed to do. This the Russians version of the A-10. 1. These planes will linger in the area long as possible to support their friendly's on the ground. 2. Once fired upon, it's really hard and nearly impossible to pinpoint the exact location of origin especially WHILE under fire and if the source is not a dedicated launch sight like a SAM's sight or bigger hard installation. I'm sure with a little experience and some advanced tech, the pilot can get the direction of fire but not really the source however idk how updated or old this Jets is as there were many refits. The point is it's one jet with a flying into a sea of snakes looking to get a lucky lock or kill. They can see him but he the pilot can not see them if not specifically told to by the ground forces. These pilots know they take a risk providing close air support, flying low or flying in the same air space for too long but Russia has accounted for by building a plane that can take a hit and allowing it options when escaping.

There were a few incidents during the Persian Gulf War of jets getting hit by manpads and getting back to base. Some others may have gone down from them. Larger missles were, naturally, more likely to bring one down. Even AAA was tough on low-flying jets, as the British found out.

Actually the aircraft is out of the fight due to the damage inflicted by the missile. It's just like a shoot down at this point.

I take my hat off to the pilot as well as to the designers and builders of the aircraft. I've heard of dodging bullets but this guy is dodging missiles.

CAS planes like the SU-25 here, are meant to take heavy punishment from ground fire. Anything short of a dedicated AA missile, like the AMRAAM or the Russian made R-77, has rather low chance to score a mission kill.

Looked like the front fuselage right by the pilot...probably has a bit more armor here

The su25 is similar to the a 10 being both cas(close air support) the su 25 has very tough armour that can take 1 air defence missile and a load of AA bullets

I know what the SU-25 is. I know what the A-10 is. I know that these are wonderful cars. But, I also know that they bring death. And I really want the war to end soon: for Ukraine too , and for Russia. Because I know what war is.

The SU-25 is an absolute beast. Used to love flying it in my old flight simulator games.

Frogfoots are badass, just like the A10. And they were both built in the 70's.

Bloody hell it really is amazing that thing can even fly. Must be a much slower moving aircraft by comparison but definitely useful for providing support to ground troops if it isn’t just simply blasting over a small area in an instant. Betting it was still badly damaged though considering it looks like the explosion went right to the engine.

Daniel Whyatt close air support craft want to be slow and yeah, this thing probably isn’t going to fly again. But it did its job taking a hit, still going to hit its target, and then presumably returning to base or getting far enough away for the pilot to safely bail.

Only a few soviet subs were made using titanium. It is notoriously difficult, thus expensive, to work with for sub building. Welding titanium for this use is a nightmare.

It will be repaired. The SU-25 is very heavily armored, meaning it has not sustained damage to the point it cannot be restored

Think of it like this, if you had tons of explosives in your now on fire and being attacked vehicle, would you keep the explosives in the vehicle? Not defending the Russians but that may not have been a "still gonna do my job" thing, he may not have even reached his target i don't know, but i don't think he'd keep the bombs in cause he could blow himself up that way.

Most missiles in the air detonate by proximity fuze.
