Russia charges hypersonic missile scientists with treason!?

In just the first two weeks of America's Patriot Air Defense System being operational in Ukraine, a reported SEVEN Russian Kinzhal missiles were shot down over Kyiv. Now, as Russia rushes to shift the narrative around their supposedly "invincible missile," a third Russian hypersonic scientist has been charged with treason... and it looks like Russian President Vladimir Putin is looking to pin Kinzhal's failure on the nation's leading scientists.
Let's talk about what this means for Kinzhal, and for the future of Russian weapons programs.

    So he knows nothing about aerodynamics then. Blunt noses are better sometimes, if its a long/wide or both body, blunt is better because it takes the heat and redirects it out and away from the rest of the body Take the space shuttle nose for example, if it was pointy, the rest of the airframe would experience significantly more drag, at speed drag equals heat, ending with the body being compromised or destroyed completely

    The 1991 version of Patriot was a SAM designed to shoot down aircraft. It was not even designed or programmed to shoot down missiles yet it worked about 25% of the time. On the first day of the second Gulf War, Patriot engaged 9 missiles and intercepted all 9.

    Didn’t know it wasn’t even designed for the role. My understanding was that there was a problem with different parts of the system going slightly out of synch because someone had tied a clock to the cpu speed and given enough time without rebooting, say 50 hours, there would be enough lag to have a complete miss. Makes the software bug much more understandable. Crazy that they even intercepted some. The 25 percent were probably fresh after boot. Wonder if there are numbers somewhere for the success rate in the first day of use vs the second.

  • @williamzk9083

    @@SevPlays The PAC-1 was semi-active radar homing in the terminal phase. It's initial flight to target was under command control. During this time the missile also received time stamped packets of data containing target position. This was used to aim the missile seeker antenna in the nose untill it aquired the target. However because of a bug the missile clock and radar clock drifted out of synch and the seeker looked for the target in the wrong position. If the clock was 1 second out the error could be 1000m at the speed a SCUD traveled. The missile itself relied too much on its proximtiy fuse rather than hit to kill so a shrapnel hit just damaged the warhead or missile which crashed anyway near the target or in the city.

  • @michaelstora70

    @michaelstora70

    11 ай бұрын

    @Severn the bug impacted the "gate" time during which the missile looked for it's own radar return from the target. It resulted in failed detections making the patriot blind. Due to time being measured as a 24 bit integer, the gate started shifting after the search radar was on for 8 hours and by 20 hours the Patriot was completely blind. One particular Patriot at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia had been on for 200 hours and did did not even see a scud that hit a barracks. The problem was identified on Feb 11 1991 and a software patch created. The new software was installed on the Dhahran Patriot on Feb 26. Unfortunately the failed detection was on Feb 25, the day before.

    Unfortunately they are world leaders, or at least that's the commonly accepted story, when it comes to electronic jamming. They are disrupting GPS guidance and the US-supplied JDAMS are failing. The failure of backup inertial guidance is possibly a result of low altitude release and the lack of compatible electronic systems in the launch aircraft. Knowing the yanks they probably have a solution or means of targeting the jammers but don't want to release the kitty from the bag.

    "a wider array of military-centric subjects" - that is a double edged sword. If the other subjects are as well covered - sure, go for it. However, it is dangerous to go into territory where the knowledge is maybe way more limited. And that could be a disappointment. I can't remember the guy, but I watched a few videos about food from a guy. It was quite interesting. But then he made videos about food in the middle ages - and these were just a mess. Because he had waaay too little knowledge about this time period. And it showed, these videos were just bad with a lot of heavy flaws and errors. It is better to put out less content and stick to areas you DO know a lot about, than to broaden the subjects to the point where stuff in the video becomes inaccurate, superficial or plain wrong.

    China could start backing a PRM ( Peoples Republic of Manchuria) movement in the Vladivostok region so the ethnic Chinese ( majority of the population) can form an independent country and eventually join China so China regains tbe former Outer Manchuria province. Exactly the same playbook Putin used in Donbas and Luhansk. Retaking Manchuria would probably be easier and bring China more benefits than trying to retake Taiwan. Putin wouldn't get much sympathy from the rest of the world.

    In the short term the shooting down of the missile has even more significance. It effectively kills the export market for Russia. After all, who’s going to pay for a missile that can’t hit its target or is easily shot down with 1980’s era missile defense systems?

    “It would have been tested, and the Russian military knew how it would perform.” Judging from past testing of guided missiles, where multiple parts of the test were manipulated to make the test go well (including painting targets and a guideline to them yellow),some may know, but they certainly lie and exaggerate their capabilities to their higher-ups.

    It’s very rare that the Russian military rejects equipment that is not for purpose - at least publicly. I do remember an article that talked about a Guards tank division rejecting the first T-90 tanks because they were not fit purpose. However, you always have to take this level of oversight with a pinch of salt. On the other hand, testing opportunities for this type of weapon are probably extremely limited - regarding its performance against an air defence system. The ideal would be for non destructive testing, it’s possible. You model tests to get near misses.

    Wasn’t the Nike Hercules a hypersonic missile? It flew a Mach five, was maneuverable enough to intercept an incoming maneuvering target, shot down an incoming Corporal missile, was removed from service in the US (by the start treaty, I believe) because of its anti ICBM capability? What year was it fielded? (edit 1958)

  • @trolleriffic

    @trolleriffic

    8 ай бұрын

    In 1959 the US conducted a number of tests of an experimental hypersonic boost glide vehicle called Alpha Draco or McDonnell Model 122B Test Vehicle. It was a Mach 5.5 vehicle which would glide at around 90,000ft for a couple of hundred miles then go into a terminal dive. This was followed by the McDonnell Model 122E BGRV which flew in 1966 and was a 21'6" long narrow biconic made out of specially coated columbium with a water-cooled nose tip to stop the whole thing melting during flight at Mach 20. After two failures, the third and final test flight launched from Vandenberg on top of an Atlas F missile, travelling 5,000 miles downrange to Wake Island after performing a right-left pair of 90 degree turns. The 45 minute flight ended when the vehicle had slowed to Mach 5 at 100,000ft whereupon the self-destruct was initiated. None of this stuff is new and the Soviets also had experimented with manoeuvrable RVs (MaRVs) as well as a number of incredibly innovative missile concepts that never made it into service such as the hybrid air-breathing road-mobile GNOM that would have matched the capability of the 51 ton silo-deployed RT-2 ICBM in a missile weighing just 29 tons. Steerable RVs for ICBMs weren't abandoned because they were too difficult to do, the problem was they weren't worth the cost and effort. Conventional ballistic RVs were cheaper, smaller, lighter, faster and more accurate and although MaRVs were better at getting through ABM defences you could get the same result using more missiles/warheads/decoys/jammers. The current Russian aerospace and defence industry is a sad joke compared to not the US, but also to what Soviet engineers achieved during the Cold War. Pioneers like Valentin Glushko created rocket engines that still haven't been surpassed to this day and would be extremely challenging to replicate even with modern design and manufacturing technology. If he was alive now I suspect he'd be working for one of the big US defence companies like L3Harris or Raytheon instead of staying in Russia with no R&D money because it had all been stolen.
