Have you ever seen anything that addresses how their friendship and lightheartedness might have played into them screwing around with each other? Like, a lot of bands, would Alex and Geddy decide to alter an ending on Neil and then wait to see how he reacted? Or did modern production or their dedication to being professional and respecting their audience prevent them from risking that? I don't think I've read or seen anything that answers that one way or the other. Because if they did, then the math really is remarkable, and it's gotta happen instantly.

@@donhadfield2835 Dude, that vid had me crying of laughter and I had to stop it a couple of times because my stomach was hurting so much. I have close friends that when we get together we produce moments like that. Unfortunately we don't get together too often, and I'm sure we couldn't work together because no work could ever get done. These guys were able to carve a fabulously successful musical career out of their friendship. Amazing.

I've been trying to figure out RUSH for going on my fifth decade. It's an exercise in futility. I've learned to just sit and marvel in their joyous creations. What a gift this band was to the world.

I've studied rush very seriously for 45 years. I know everything they have done, I know all the words to every song and still I'm blown out of the water every time I listen. I feel very lucky to have had Rush in my orbit my whole life, what a wonderful experience and 3 absolutely great human beings!

AMEN!!! They were on such a high level compared to literally any other band on the planet, even to this day, that you can do nothing else but marvel in their creations, and let their music fill your life with amazing memories.

Thank you for doing this one. Fun fact: Both Alex and Geddy are also playing synthesizer foot pedals that fill in when they are doing everything else. So yeah...they are even more amazing than you thought.

A good point to spot this is when Geddy starts singing. At the same time he is also playing bass guitar and the pedals set to a sort of synth-strings patch. His right foot is a better musician than half of the R&R HOF.

One of the things that always strikes me about this song is how at 12:36 (in this reaction video), near the end of a long and incredibly complex song, that they decided that one single note on the keyboard needed to played to make the song complete. Geddy even had to adjust the settings on the keyboard to play that one note, but damn if it didn't need to be there!

I always love that part. That note isn't even part of the studio version. So not only is Geddy playing bass, six-string guitar, singing and handling the keys (hands and feet), he's his own synth tech on stage.

Sadly, RUSH is no more with the passing of "The Profesor", Neil Peart, on January 7, 2020. These guys played together for over 50 years. 19 albums. Over 1,950 live concerts. To their credit as good humans, Getty & Alex of them have been married once to the love of their lives for since the mid-70s. Neil was married to his first wife for 20 years until she passed away from cancer in '98. His current wife also over 20 years until his passing coincidentally from cancer. They have always toured with family in tow. Wives, kids & even family pets. They are like a huge family. Best of friends. This has been what has kept the band together for so many years. When Neil passed away there was no question. Geddy & Alex immediately announced that RUSH was finished. Without Neil, there was no RUSH. The end of an era. My first concert was the RUSH Moving Pictures Tour Sep 20, 1980, at the Lakeland Civic Center in Lakeland, FL. I was 13 years old. I have seen them 4 times since. The last show they were all in their 60s and still put on a non-stop 3hr show. I was exhausted by the end. It was amazing. I was blessed. Neil still did his usual 15-minute drum solo. Just WOW!

Only band in the world where a nearby Thesaurus ALWAYS comes in handy! 😂

I was so lucky to see this tour in 1981. You can't imagine how good this sounded live and to watch only 3 musicians recreate this masterpiece live.... I'll never forget it. RIP Neil.

I got to see them on the Exit Stage Left tour in 1981 when I was in college. Best show I ever saw. Period. Totally amazing!

I went to a Red Sox @ Oakland A's game during the tour. Arrive at the ballpark and the parking lots are more jammed than they should be. Turns out Rush is playing in the arena and they share the same parking lots. Wasn't a huge fan yet or I would have been there instead of the ballgame. REALLY regret missing that now!

THIS is the song that made me a RUSH fan. The instruments are old school. Neil has ALL the percussion. Alex is flipping back and forth between the 12 and the 6. Geddy is doing the work of three people. He and Alex are having such a great time on stage. AND this one song can be analyzed as deeply as any of the great classical works. Chod, your reaction during the song was delightful. It brought back all my joy for this song. For seeking the sacred river Alph. And dining on honeydew. I promise you will watch this over and over. You will listen to the album track over and over. You will puzzle over the lyrics until a thousand years have come and gone but time has passed you by. This was the most excellent thing this band could do. And this will make them as close to immortal as mere humans can be. ✌🏼

If only it made the professor immortal… RIP Neil! He is immortal in his legacy though… there will never be another like him. I still miss him every day, and get emotional about his passing even though I never even met him outside seeing him perform. It makes me feel so good that their music is still insanely appreciated and admired to this day.

Born in 1970 Such a great and humble band I got a little teary eyed( Damn and I’m 6’4 260 lol) watching this moment for RUSH in their hometown what a great and humble band…I remember when my journey started with Rush as an 11 year old in 1981 hearing Tom Sawyer for the first time..then I had a friend who said there is so much more, he came over my house with his older brothers copies on vinyl of 2112 and Farewell to Kings the next Saturday and the journey began and I became a lifelong fan…loved being a kid in the 70’s and a teen in the 80’s .a great time to be alive hard to explain if you weren’t there but it was special…not time is perfect but I really enjoyed my time

Well said, Chod. There are several bands that may contain one member whose ability elevates that band's music beyond the typical. Rush, on the other hand, contains three master musicians whose capabilities could individually elevate ANY other band. When you put all three together in one band, their abilities are magnified beyond the natural.

Like others have said, we've all been trying to figure out Rush... myself since 1976. The best I can tell you is that 3 very good friends, who love making music, got together and formed the smallest symphonic orchestra ever known. They stayed together for 40+ years, writing songs and making music, not only for themselves, but also for the rest of us. Their music amazes us. Their lyrics tell a story we all enjoy. And we all sit in awed silence while Geddy, Alex and Neil take us on a journey we never can forget with music never before heard, nor replicated. IMHO, Rush is the epitome of what Prog-Rock wanted to be in the '60's & '70's. You can hear the influences of Yes and Led Zeppelin in their music. But no one could tell a story better than Neil Peart. And he was a better than average drummer. 😉 Enjoy the Rush ride...I've been on it for 45+ years...and I still love it!

Omg my Canadian boys!!!! 1981 I was having my first baby. Had tickets I was going no matter what.. would have been great labour back ground. My son was a month old. Chod this was absolutely time stopping. We had 5th row floors. They were amazing friends they fed off each other. 45 years together never fought, no crap. Just three friends who wanted to play music. Huge Rush fan for decades and have seen them live many times. They are just as good live as they sound on their recordings. Three extraordinary musicians that sound like as least double and everyone of them is a virtuoso in their own right. They were/are truly amazing... RIP Neil Peart.

The build up to Alex’s solo gives me goosebumps every time and they last through the solo. One of my favorite guitar solos and I am a huge Gilmour fan.

My first concert in 1978 was Rush "A Farewell to Kings" which had "Xanadu" as a song on the album. It is THE SONG that convinced me to love Rush and I played it at 11 every time during high school and university. LOL

Its interesting that neils kit kept getting smaller and smaller later on. His r40 kit is tiny compared to this. Probably got sick of all that crap everywhere.

Xanadu is a masterpiece and one of their most beautiful songs. Exit Stage Left is, in my opinion, their best live album and still falls short of capturing how well they sound seeing them live in person. While I think everyone appreciates Neil’s drumming & Geddy’s bass playing, I feel Alex is somewhat underrated, because I think he’s the best guitarist going. Rush are three of the most virtuoso musicians and they were slaying in their live performances 30 years after this performance. Of all their albums, “Hemispheres” was their most ambitious and musically crafted album. Great review ! I’m glad you appreciate the musical excellence that is Rush.

Rush took the 3 man power trio to a level which, in my opinion, will never be duplicated. I feel extremely privileged to have seen them Live numerous times. My only regret is that I waited so long to do it! 👍🤠

I first saw RUSH in 1981 for the Moving Pictures Tour, and 4 more times since in Colorado USA, and they absolutely Shredded it every time. Magnificent Live Shows and Phenominal Musicianship 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼

Feels to me like two guys who have been friends since their early teens and a soulmate doing what they love. Special, special relationship.

When I was 13 I got a weekend job doing inventory at a hardware store just to buy a VHS copy of Exit Stage Left when it first came out. It Was 60 bucks! And in 1984 that was some serious dough!

Yeah, this is a really tight performance, and is actually an improvement on the studio version. By the time this was recorded they'd been performing it for 4 years and really had it down.

Each song feels like it's composed, and it kind of is - but it starts by being what the writer wanted, and ends up being what Rush wanted.

Geddy and Alex both playing double neck guitars, both playing pedals with their feet, Geddy also playing synths and of course Neil using the entire range of percussion. Amazing performance. I was fortunate to see them 15 times starting in 1977 touring the album which contained this song. It was like watching the "All The Worlds A Stage" concert PLUS the bonus of the new album "A Farewell To Kings". That was the end of a certain era of Rush. I saw them again the next two tours and met the band both times. I didn't miss many tours through to the end.

And it's almost note-perfect and arrangement-perfect with the studio version. Geddy on bass/keys/pedals and vocals. It's insane.

The deep appreciation for their technical proficiency is well deserved, but their songwriting ability was equally astounding. Every note in this song is perfect and performed live, well, their ability to arrange and produce music was incredible. Given their talent, their catalog, their longevity, and not least of all their personality as individuals and as a group - I have to regard Rush as the greatest rock 'n roll band of all time.

The coolest thing about Rush has always been their ability to move through a lot of different time signatures while making it seem so effortless. It's so fluid that half the time we don't even catch it... very cool !!! Rush is full of Odd Meters. Circumstances has many changes. mostly these: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 3/8, 5/8, 6/8, and 7/8 Losing It is in 11/8. Kid Gloves is in 5/4 alternating with 4/4. Both books of Cygnus are packed with odd meters: 6/4, 7/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, and 12/8 YYZed is in 10/8 Superconductor is in a very danceable 7/4, alternating with 4/4. Jacob's Ladder is in a myriad of changing meters, namely: 5/4, 6/4, 6/8, and 7/8. Subdivisions is mostly in 7/8. Tom Sawyer is also in 7/8

that's why neil is the best period, and he hits so hard and to see him live was a joy to watch. try doing what he does for a 2-3 hour concert, RIP to the GOAT!

Seen RUSH 30 times they never I mean never disappointed. Rush was my daughter's first concert when she was 13 she's 22 now and we still talk about that night and how great rush is.

I had the very good fortune of seeing Rush live on this tour in the fall of 1980 in Upstate NY. I had been listening to their music for a few years by then and little by little they were becoming one of, if not my favorite, bands. After seeing their performance in person, that top spot was solidified. No one, and I mean no one, can touch what these three can do live...not then, not now, and perhaps never.

With Rush at their best - and this song (and this version from Exit Stage Left in particular) is peak Rush - it seems like three virtuosos each doing amazing solos, and yet they tie together beautifully in perfect rhythm and harmony.

Three Maestro's in one band. As Neil throws his drum sticks, Geddy playing bass and singing, Alex's guitar tone but one extra thing to check out is Alex's switch of guitar neck at 8:40 on the video. Beautiful.

"I don't even think mistakes exist in the band of Rush." Ha ha ha. I could see you trying to count some of that out. I know. They're good, eh? And what about when Neil is playing the bells note for note with Geddy on the keys? How do they make all of that complexity and strange timing all work? It's like sorcery. Thanks for doing this. I've been waiting to see you do this for a long time. And it's turned out to be one of my favourite reactions ever, from any reactor.

I’ve always appreciated the bells on top of the keys. Most groups would have just patched the bells into the keyboard but it wouldn’t have sounded or felt the same. Brilliant.

@@crazyfingers19 I suspect you're right about how most would do it, which is why a lot of artists are very likely quite intimidated by their skills. It's that kind of orchestral excellence, and that playful desire to see how much they can do, that creates so many of their magical moments. Right from the first time I heard them, I'd never heard any band where each member seemed so remarkable distinct, and yet they seamlessly fed into a whole that was itself some kind of alchemy of the three that managed to be 'the song' without taking anything away from each members playing.

Geddy amazes me on this song. Bass, bass pedals, keyboards, rhythm guitar, and sings. Plus, they are so tight playing together. Amazing performance.

I know that moment you're so blown away and you just don't have the words to explain and express...frustrating, because you want to say explain exactly what you saw and heard, but you can't get the words out. That was me the first time seeing this and the hundredth time. It never ever gets old...

This is a brilliant masterpiece! Geddy and Alex met in Junior High when they were 13. They have best friends since then. Neil was their second drummer after their first drummer John Rutsy had issues with Type I Diebetes and couldn't tour. Neil fit right in. They are also great comedians and Alex has done some acting on the Trailer Park Boys. Check out Rash the "real" story of Rush episode 2. It is a comedic skit they did. Also check out Dinner with Rush. It is later on in their career and you will see how much they still enjoyed each other's company and how funny they are. Cheers

I saw Rush during this 81 tour..they were on a rotating stage in the middle of the auditorium . It was mind blowing!

You can never unhear RUSH now lol I've played drums for about 30 year now and all because of Neil. Started listening to them in the 70s I know the songs all by heart and still can't play them all but I'm OK with it lol. Favorite band all time for me.

You get it. These guys had a work ethic few bands could match to compliment the talent level that very few bands could match. The result is/was special.

When Alex switches to the bottom 6 string neck for his ending guitar solo at 11:30 Geddy transitions to the 12 string of his doubleneck and stays there to the end of the song.

Yep. Welcome to the big leagues. Multiple instrumentations by each one of them. What you don’t see we’ll, but definitely hear, is that while Alex is playing a double neck guitar, he at times plays bass or keyboards with his feet (when he’s looking down at his feet); the same with Geddy, he’s playing a double guitar, bass and 6 string, he’s also playing keyboards or bass with his feet, and singing. Not one note is missing, not one note added accidentally. Lots of transitions, lots of off beats, just amazing. Thoroughly amazing every time I watch it.

Geddy's doubleneck is actually bass and 12 string. The tuners are doubled up on the headstock, 6 on the side of the head and 6 on the back.

This is a masterpiece as beautiful as any work of art ever created by man.

Imagine too that their "skill level" was this high and they were only in their late 20's in 1981.

To this day, This old skooler has never seen a band that could duplicate thier studio sound onstage as good as Rush...Even more amazing was how they were able to stay on top 40 years without any major label support or radio airplay.

Just love your reaction to Rush. They caught my ear in 74 and been listening to them ever since. I always called their music Sophisticated Rock.

I've been waiting for you to get around to this one. I'm sure most people, especially non-musicians, don't think much about drummers. They're that guy who sits in back keeping the beat. But Neil clearly demonstrates how the best of them are true musicians, every bit as essential to the musicality of a tune as the guitar, keyboards, or whatever. I love this video because whoever directed it knew that, and gave Neil plenty of attention, and we really get to see him at work. He is sorely missed. Other than that, I pretty much agree with all you said. Rush - one of the greatest bands there has ever been.

Chris, hard to come up with many other real good trio's. Emerson, Lake and Palmer come to mind.

The secret to Rush, I think, is they live their own music. I've seen them in concert a number of times over 25 or so years and they bring it 100% every time. They are unique in both their skill, but also discipline and stability.

In the later years their live performances were 3 hours!

You hit the nail on the head and I've seen them live multiple times and that's what sets them apart...they were as tight or tighter live than in studio. Extremely excellent musicians that took their craft very seriously. It shows.

Nice reaction Wilburn, thanks. Rush is indeed on a level on their own, Neil is the Professor for a reason. And more important; a lovely character. Check out their film 'Diner with Rush', they are just great friends playing great music.

"How do they remember everything they do?" They rehearse. Before starting a tour Neil would go in and begin rehearsal about 2 weeks before the other guys. Once Geddy and Alex arrived they'd spend a couple weeks going over arrangements and rehearsing the set list. Talking about Neil throwing a stick, if you ever get the chance to check out the Grace Under Pressure tour video, during The Weapon Neil is tossing his stick for one rotation during EACH MEASURE of what he plays during the verses. Great reaction as usual, thanks!!

I love this live version and Rush! Now, it's time for more Yes! You have yet to react to a very popular Yes song from the Roundabout era called "Perpetual Change," which is amazing, and beloved by Yes fans. Another great song of theirs that fans love is "South Side of the Sky," which has harder sections with an incredible section featuring the piano that is mind blowing.

This song and video is incredible, I remember seeing this live in concert in 76 and 77 during the all the worlds a stage and farewell to kings tours, it was awesome!

When you watch Rush play live, watch Alex and Geddy's feet. Both are starting sequencers and playing tones while playing their respective instruments. That is how Rush gets their fat sound. Magical.

Just about to settle in and watch this. I can only imagine your reaction. It’s a superb performance of a great song. What isn’t so obvious unless you listen for it is how much each player is doing. Geddy has his double neck guitar because on top of playing bass guitar, and keyboards, and the Moog Taurus foot keyboard, and triggering stuff, he plays some guitar lines when Alex is doing other stuff. Alex of course swaps between 6 and 12 string guitars for different parts, plus he plays some keyboards with his feet. And of course Neil is playing drums and percussion. I don’t know if Neil triggers any sounds on this tour, but he definitely does on later tours. They made sure that they could play these songs live as credible performances with just the three of them. There were only a select few instances where they got other people on stage with them. It was also rare to have a full backing track live, such as the sequence in Red Sector A. The rest of the time they’re doing a real juggling act.

Your absolutely right. After my 1st round with Rush. I started to listen more intentionally. I would follow them individually then cohesively and how the instruments would correlate with one another. And how each one can seemingly go off in different directions as if all 3 are playing their own solo and yet they don't collide they still sound together. It's simply amazing. And they are the only band I know of that can pull that off. Freewill is a good example of that.

When I seen this live at the Rosemont Horizon in the seventies, I tripod out when Liefsen played the double neck...the band's bassist flipped when Lee played the double neck, and switched to keyboard and moog pedal...he went out and bought one. Awesome bass lines plus the rest. Great channel and comments 👏

The level of musicianship is off the Richter scale. I have seemed theme live like many hear and am so thankful i grew up in this era of music in the 70-80 and the great musicians i got to see.

It made me happy to hear you say you want to keep learning to be on Neil's level since Neil himself never stopped learning. He was taking jazz lessons well into his life. If he would give any advice on how to improve it's probably to be open to learning new and different styles and genres, but especially jazz.

The inside cover of the "A Farewell to Kings" album always intrigued me. These are the instruments each member is playing: Neil Peart: drums (a lot of them), orchestra bells, tubular bells, temple blocks, cowbells, wind chimes, bell tree, triangle, vibra-slap and other percussion Geddy Lee: bass guitar, twelve string guitar, double neck bass (a Rickenbacker 4080), Mini Moog and synthesizers, Moog Taurus bass pedal synthesizer and vocals Alex Lifeson: six and twelve string electric guitar, six and twelve string acoustic guitars, classical guitar, Moog Taurus bass pedal synthesizer Is that enough for y'all? LOL

Words fail, don’t they? Yet, we are left with trying to describe experience with meager tools. 1) Three absolutely masterful individual musicians. 2) A three way musical mind meld. Redefine the term “tight.” 3) Brilliant song-writing putting their individual and collective mastery on full display. 4) As great as they are, their music shows tremendous restraint. Remarkably coherent and beautifully integrated whole. Listen to more recent bands like Dream Theater who, for all their virtuosity, fall short of this level and too often come off as disjointed and indulgent. No shade to Dream Theater who are tremendous. Rush just set an incredibly high standard. This performance is this incredible band at the height of their considerable powers.
