This. THIS. Right here. This is why you always start with the studio version. If you're not familiar with the original, then you realize too late that they were just goofing around to break up the tedium that doubtlessly comes from playing the same thing over and over, night after night. Rush were some of the most album accurate artists you could find for the majority of their time together. Later, though, they had more and more fun in live shows, yet never compromised the musicality.

Neil once said drumming in RUSH was like running a marathon, and doing calculus in your head at the same time. But.....there has never been anyone who could do it better. RIP, professor.
La Villa Strangiato is the greatest rock instrumental song ever in my opinion.
Where the goofy intro came from: There was a "polka" bent to the comedy interludes shown during breaks on this tour. This song was the first of 2 encores (Working Man the finale) and so the intro here was an extension of that theme that had been present all night. I guess it's one of those "you had to be there" kind of things. It worked for me.

This song is perfection.
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary
I’ve seen them live several times pretty early on in their career. From before Neil Peart inToronto back when they were a bar band doing the rock bar circuit. 3 guys !!! I don’t think I’ll ever get over this fact. How do three guys produce such powerful and intricate music. Complex arrangements. They never underestimated their audience. As a matter of fact their audience were so fiercely loyal to them when the radio stations wouldn’t play their music and reviewers like Rolling Stone magazine ( who were one of the premiere arbiters of music back then.) If a band got their endorsement, people paid attention. No, they got to be one of the biggest followings by relentlessly touring, growing the fan base by not compromising on the integrity of the compositions. It’s what they became famous for. Three guys. I’ll never get over that. As they would say back in the sixties “ far out man.”

Not to mention outta sight and groovy. People put way too much emphasis on what RS and others have bands and musicians rated, like it's the bible. It's not, more often than not it's an opinion page.
That circus sound isn't on the original track or the live Exit Stage Left version. They just improvised that for this performance. The Exit Stage Left version is the definitive version. But this is a great song nonetheless.

You mean they just improvised it for this tour, not just this performance. They started the song this way all three nights I saw them on this tour.
Yeah man, you get RUSH for sure. You are now in the club. No dummies in a RUSH crowd. It’s a cool befit for having excellent musical taste. I was very fortunate to have seen them live in concert 18 times on 17 different tours over the decades. I’m from a Old School, day one, RUSH stronghold city in TEXAS. San Antonio. That’s right, we were one of the very first cities they toured in America and had a hardcore, loyal following ever since. They said many times how much they loved our city also. I’m not talking just in thanks at the end of the show either. It was legit. We loved them, they loved us. Not just the fans but the city itself. Several bands have said the same thing. RUSH night was always very special. A different level concert vibe in the crowd and show. The simplest description is it was special. I also say it was A LOT of very loud fun, screaming my face off and being generally worthless the next day. My hands sore from banging them together, hung over and blurry. My eyes still blazing red, my ears ringing to almost deafness, my voice destroyed and harsh from yelling at the top of my lungs for hours and a big, stupid, silly grin on my face. Communication with me was almost impossible. I’d be yelling “WHAT?” if someone was trying to talk to me. I couldn’t hear them because of the ringing! I looked like a maniac and sounded horrible. They would usually just walk away shaking their head while listening to my silly, day after concert, perma-grin, happy giggling like I’d lost it. Generally worthless for at least 24 hours after a really good show. Always a guarantee with RUSH. My family and friends figured out if I’d see a concert the night before and generally left me alone that day because all they would get out of me was “WHAT?!” Ha Ha! Good times!
Thank you guys for more Rush greatness. They purposefully mess with the intro and slowed down tempo towards the end, they are goofballs.... That song is so damn hard technically but one of Alex's best solos in my useless opinion. They don't take themselves too seriously, something today's world needs more of. Peace ✌️ out.
That is absolutely one of my favorite Rush tunes. It's just a masterwork.
The beginning was brilliant! I've never heard that intro before. It was more of a polka.. which they have used a few times just for the humorous aspect.. you must understand the Brilliance Behind the Music and the humor. I've been a fan since the beginning. Seen them five times and they never failed to amaze . God Rest Neil Peart.🙏
Amazing masterpiece!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It's amazing that they can keep track of all the changes. Never just 4/4 for long often changing back to back 3/4, 9/8, 11/8, 5/4 etc. craziness.
They have been playing La Villa for 35 years at this point. That intro was just a way to mix it up - give the fans something different. You should check out this intro when Alex's guitar goes out. Search 'Alex Lifeson Still No Guitar.'
The song intro was based on a hilarious comic skit in which all three performed and included on one of their concert video DVD’s. It is a polka version of one of their songs.
There's a video of Neil's drum tech setting up his kit - pretty amazing. Rush = 3 geniuses brought together by a perfect alignment of the stars.
Greatest band period. Talent, longevity, friendship, fan dedication, live performances. No other band worked harder and gave their fans more for so long. Never lost a step. Love these guys! Miss Neil so much
RUSH is a band that had a great sense of humor.
I loved seeing these guys in concert and watching them have fun messing around with their music.
Rush has about 3 or 4 comedy type video skits during their almost 3 hr concerts during the breaks for many years😆🤣 !!!
This version is from the encore of the show. They tended to play around a lot once the 'main show' was over. Show her the official video there's no messing around there. It's just straight up intense! 🤯
I've seen Rush more times than any other band over the years (I've been to over two hundred shows since my first one in '77). They NEVER disappointed and were always on stage for three hours or more. RIP Neal...you're sorely missed.
I was lucky enough to see Rush 9 times . What an underated band. The goat on drums another on bass and Alex is the most underated of them all a top 5 guitarist
This is buy far one of the very hardest pieces of music to play. It's so amazing that it is only 3 people.

You cannot predict where these guys are heading. You're just along for the ride and an ever so willing participant.
The definition of two musicians being absolutely in sync is Neil and Geddy from 9:01 - 9:03 on this video. There are a lot of very good rock rhythm sections but nobody beats these two........

They individually get to shine on this song :) And it's the best song to drum to!
Dee Rush always has funny openings to their classic songs during their concerts. My friends and I were fortunate enough to see Rush during this tour, Time Machine Tour when they played in West Palm Beach in Oct. of 2010. This video clip of this song was part of their live concert video recorded in Cleveland, Ohio. Reason for Cleveland is that local radio station, WMMS, 100.7 1st played Rush's songs when they were starting out in this country. No other stations didn't play their songs in the beginning. Of course, local DJ, Alan Freed 1st coined Rock N Roll in the early days of the music. Rock Hall of Fame is located in Cleveland.
I was there. Floor on. Geddy's side. Incredible...and Happy I can watch and relive it. Your assessment of Rush is spot on.
Rush are three musicans that are GOATs at their crafts
The “circus” beginning is a light-hearted silly thing done just for the live performance. This is probably the “Time Machine” tour where they showed funny skits of a band called “Rash” who did a few seconds of their songs in different genres, like polka, folk, country. It’s for fun and it’s just their humor.
Wilburn, you are correct. Nobody played on Rush's level. They were 3 perfectionists. There concerts lasted 3 to 3 1/2 hours and were 30 plus songs.
this may be from the time machine tour and they are playing off the polka theme from the intro video for the show. RUSH ROCKS(and have a great sense of humor) watch opening for time machine tour, and the whole show!!!
Great reaction! ❤
These guys are perfectionists do you know they rehearse a lot! I’ve never heard a more tighter band
The original intro was a classical guitar piece. They were having fun as their alter ego band RASH.
I'll just add a quote from the outro to this tour, when Paul Rudd is talking to The Professor: "Is it hard what you do?" "YES!" Plus, he DID smile at Geddy, which I loved (at the end of the slow goofy section). I adore that wonderful friendship these three had which allowed them to goof around.
This is definitely one of those drum songs that requires full focus the entire way through.
You gotta be a musician to get 90% of the jokes and winks these guys are playing with. They play several classic styles and snips of music standards, throw it in a blender and make it sound fun. Never seen this one, liked it very much!
This was the first encore track on the Time Machine Tour. Rush are well known for having a goofy sense of humour. The start was just them messing around before getting into the track properly
Seen them when this came out. Great Rush concert memories.
It took roughly five hours to set up Neil Peart's kit, and another five to completely tear it down. His drum tech. Lorne Wheaton, worked overtime.
The Strange Villa. I have always see this as a "Nightmare Dream" in my head. Very creepy and it was meant to be. Brilliant.
No doubt that is exactly what talent sounds like
The polka intro you didn't like was just something they were doing for their own amusement. Remember, they've been playing this tune for decades. It might be your first time, but it's their 2,396,574th time.
Brilliant reaction 💪
You can spend a weekend watching Neil Peart's isolated tracks on KZread. Also, Neil said more than once that he feels his playing is like doing algebra while running a marathon.
I remember when that song and album came out. It was their first instrumental, and it was so novel for us back then. It was a blend of different styles that followed its own pattern, and we were all thinking WTH?! Still it became an instant fan favorite. That tour was amazing. I had been seeing them every time I could since 1977, and feel so fortunate that I was able to watch them grow into these legends.
One of the lucky ones who got to see them perform this live. What a treat, and what skill. Regards
Most listeners do not understand that the opening to this song is improvised. It is NOT the way the original song starts. They're basically having fun with it.
The 'circus' is actually a polka and in the concert film that starts and ends the show, they show 'the real history of rush' which you can search on KZread to 'get' the joke.
The original version doesn’t have the “circus sound”. They came up with that because they made a comedic video where they play a Polk band playing this. This was their way of revisiting that funny video. Fans know this. That intro was for them.
He smiled near the end lol
"circus vibes creep me out" yeah, the song is called La Villa Strangiato, it's supposed to be uneasy. Check out the first album before Neil joined the band ;)
they all like to joke, and after you play this song for 40 yrs, they always find a way to have fun with a song on every tour.
She has such a beautiful smile.
You guys would both probably enjoy Dan Rather's full length interview with Geddy Lee.
This is hilarious, my man is lovin it bust his girl wants no part of it. Girl, this is best band you will ever see.
up here in Canada they were deemed ambassador‘s of rock ‘n’ roll they all know their instruments very very well and the reason why Mr. Neil Peart does not show emotion it’s not because he’s counting or anything it’s just because he’s as cool as a cucumber my friend
A clue to the polka start can be found in "the real history of rush part 2". Not only great music/musicians but wicked sense of humour. Cheers b
Young lady... the goofy intro was RUSH just being Rush... the goofy fun group of talented friends that they are !!! Make no mistake these are among the most talented musicians on the planet !!!
The "circus" sound is called "Klezmer", a Jewish folk music style. It's a nod to Geddy, being Jewish, and to the many Bar mitzvas (and Bat Mitzvas) that Rush played at in Canada before they made it big.
The polka intro was a salute to Cleveland, where their career got started thanks to a DJ named Donna Halper. I miss Pratt..😢🩷
"How did they go from circus to that sound???" If you have to ask, then you don't understand RUSH!!!!
These guys were in their 60's and still rock in at a frenetic pace! As a drummer, I'd be wiped out after playing 5 minutes into this song! RIP, Neil Peasy, for you are the best!
That wasn't circus music , it was polka, and digging deeper into the various yarns rush has weaved over the years, it's actually really funny. On the album it starts totally different.
There are those who say they can't stand RUSH, but anyone that knows ANYTHING about music on a professional level (I do NOT) knows how incredible they are!
The polka intro section to this song is a reference back to the beginning of the concert, where a video clip plays - search KZread for "RASH the real history of rush" and you will get the joke! The time signature in the section you were talking about is 7/8 🙂
You guys have a lot of passive aggression coming out in these reviews 😂
I went to multiple Rush concerts back in the late 70's and 80's but never followed through on any in the 21st century. If I had, I would have brought my dirty laundry to the show. I've always thought it would be hilarious if they had some random dude doing his laundry on stage while they were performing.
Great reaction. Try Circumstances from the album Hemispheres.
Neil is doing complex math while doing a triathalon. Gotta pick his spots to smile. RIP
Years ago, before I played bass I worked as a doorman in a bar that was on the second floor. I always felt bad for the poor drummer who had to lug those drums up those stairs every night. That's what roadies are for, lol
I think this song in particular showcases not only the band talent as a whole but also each individual's talent.
Their Masterpiece
Dude, you gotta play the original studio version for her!
I'm going to make an assumption that what they were playing at the beginning was reminiscent of a local popular song in that country.
I’m a new subscriber Trevor !
This one’s been in a 3 way tie as one of my all time favorites by them! Lah Villa Strahngiato my brother! As always, I salute your eclectic taste and far ranging, epic musical journey! 👊🎉🍾🥂
The polka intro is Rush just trolling and having fun with the fans. The original song has a guitar intro. If the wife wants to see the original studio version live, I recommend it because imo it's the best version of the song.
The opening echoes back to a video they ran at the beginning of the show featuring the boys in fat suits as a RUSH polka cover band called RASH. You'll see Geddy wearing a RASH band shirt at some shows.
Neil was always concentrated live. If your lucky, (and are either close enough or Neils on the big screen) to catch him making any expressions, lol. Working Man Live in Cleveland, Neil's pretty animated in that one. And he actually comes out from behind his kit and takes a final bow with Geddy and Alex (which he had never done prior) at The Forum in August 2015. Geddy said it surprised him as it was unexpected, but it was their final show. 😁 i actually have one photo of Neil smiling behind his kit and I got super lucky. Lol
5:05 that beat and that solo
They went into a strange villa, and found strange time signatures.
The intro was a part of the theme of this tour. There was a polka themed video sketch played in the beginning of the concert.
