Too bad about not liking Geddy's voice. You have to be able to stand that to get into the lyrics, and Neil Peart's lyrics are also one of Rush's greatest draws for their fans. You're really missing something if you can't get into that.

I echo Jerry's message. I've known several people who werent fond of Geddys voice, but managed to explore Rush anyway and became Rush fans as well!! - and you should already know us Rush fans go 100 for these guys because they earned it. The music and lyricism puts them in class by themselves. You don't have to like Geddys voice, but his voice is perfect for Neil's lyrics. If you guys dig in a little and get to know them, you will experience their magic. Or you wont, I suppose might be possible. Not if given a fair chance Lol.

When I first heard Rush in '76, one of my first thoughts was that they could use a better singer. After giving it some more time I realized his singing's just fine, he just doesn't have a conventional singing voice...but he's doing it anyway. Once I saw it as overcoming a bit of a handicap my attitude changed and accepted they were meant to be a three piece.

This is quite simply the greatest rock ‘n’ roll instrumental ever. In the Rush documentary one of my favorite parts is when Vinnie Paul from Pantera said that drummers would compare themselves by whether or not they could play the song.

I play guitar, and covered a ton of Rush songs over the years, but I feel the same. His musicianship was inspirational regardless of your instrument and after losing him, I've barely picked up my guitar despite playing for 30 years. :(

Geddy's voice is unusual for sure, but after hearing him all along I've gotten used to him and also appreciate how good he is at all he does.

Such an amazing instrumental from the greatest rock trio of all times! The entire album is amazing.

I see Rush I click! The song was inspired by a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson had. I never tire of hearing it. Geddy's voice can be an acquired taste, I personally like it. Other instrumentals Where's my thing/Here it is live in Dallas YYZ live in Rio. Cheers

Saw the Hemispheres Tour 1978 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto my and the bands hometown was in high school this blonde girl asked me out to see this concert thought I was in the twighlight zone for her asking no girl asks a guy out in those days concert was amazing as were the next 26 I went to as well last 2015 still hard to listen to Neil play and not shed a tear he was my superhero not Batman Superman just him

A more recent song they did live check out Working man live in Cleveland , the guitar player plays above the fret board , they change up the tempo three times in transitions , but lots and lots of others to check out

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

I have some things to say. First, I love your channel and how you, as musicians, don’t have to keep stopping the song because you can just listen and remember your perception of the song as a whole. Secondly, as a rabid RUSH fan, I must wholeheartedly advise that you please listen to more of Geddy’s vocals. I get that some folks find it unappealing. However, I would bet that if you were to listen to more classic RUSH, you would enjoy a new appreciation of one of the best rock vocalists ever. 🤘🏻

I'd recommend they go the other direction and try out mid-late Rush. The radio only ever plays Fly By Night -> Tom Sawyer era and that's the range people gripe about the most. But when they reached the 80's and especially the 90's, he sang closer to his speaking range. Geddy Lee on Tom Sawyer and Geddy Lee on Cold Fire, are almost 2 entirely different vocalists!

Another great Rush instrumental is YYZ, Rush in Rio, Live version has got great energy. Epic performance.

Well well well..I had to do a double-take when i saw this lol.Rush on Sight After Dark?..Whoda thunk it? So glad you did this one guys. Studio-wise was the last track on the last of their 'long epics' albums, Hemispheres , in 1978. So Genesis-wise, after 'Trick Of The Tail' and 'Wind And Wuthering' , then Steve Hackett left , and Rush's Hemispheres came out the same year as '..And Then There Were Three '..As for Supertramp, this was a year before 'Breakfast in America'...Rush did a ton of instrumentals, guess I'd better get over to Patreon lol :)

La Villa Strangiato was their first instrumental. It was amazing when it came out because it was so different from what we normally listened to. It jpened the door for soooooo many more instrumentals they did. "YYZ" was wonderful. But then I think they just kept getting better with every album. "Where's My Thing?" , "Leave that Thing Alone", "Limbo", "The Main Monkey Business", "Malignant Narcissism" ... amazing! I gotta admit that I do like Geddy's voice. It's got such a warm quality

Music that will never get you laid. My mom used to say, "Rush? They look like witches!"

If you want another Rush instrumental, try YYZ live at Rio. Rush were slightly after Genesis and Supertramp, a great live band. I actually really like Geddy’s voice, especially around the late 70’s early 80’s. Great reaction from SAD!

Technically, Rush was formed a year after Genesis, and one year prior to Supertramp. But yeah, as far as any mainstream air play, Rush came later. Rush didn't really start entering widespread public consciousness until Signals / Moving Pictures in the early 1980s.

Nice to see this on here. This album and this song blew me away when they came out.

My sister dated a lead guitarist of a local rock band (Philip) - She was 16 and he was 24, mom did not like that. But he was a good guy and probably the "one" that got away. I went to one of their practices and they played this song. My introduction to Rush. And Van Halen and Journey. I was 17 and just stared in awe as Philip played this song.

This was a super reaction. You two obviously know what great musicianship is all about! And yes, I wasn't into Geddy's vocals when I began listening to RUSH either, but gradually, I came to love it. His vocal register drops a bit during the 1980's, so you might try "Analog Kid", "Subdivisions", or "Tom Sawyer". Also, "Leave That Thing Alone" is another excellent instrumental. Thanks much! ☮

Concert. I've seen them ... Five times? Maybe more. Always a good time. They are ... were ... a band who clearly loved what they did and were friends. Just a great vibe.

Neal was a percussionist. He had cow bells, chimes, a xylophone just to name a few.

Geddys voice mellowed over time, maybe try listening to a recorded 70's song for 30 secs and then switch to him singing it from 2000 on live. its a big contrast.

Rush have done many instrumentals, no one does it better, check out some of their other instrumentals.

Just happened to stumble upon your channel and like some of the other commenters here, I see Rush, I click. Three prime examples if you want to hear the true genius of Geddy Lee’s voice. Tears, from their album 2112. The Pass, from their album, Roll the Bones. BTW, RTB Is a great album start to finish. And thirdly, from Permanent Waves, lend your ears to Entre Nous. I strongly advise jumping down the Rush rabbit 🕳. You truly don’t know what you’re missing. Three masters of their craft!

Second that vote for Jacobs Ladder. In fact you can't really go wrong with most of the Exit Stage Left live performances.

I’m always surprised no one ever comments to point out the Raymond Scott tribute they do in the middle of the song to his epic tune “Powerhouse” which was greatly popularized in Bugs Bunny cartoons. So I guess I’ll take the lead here to drop that little bit of musical history in hopes others will be encouraged to do the same with other stuff. I always love to learn more about music and stuff and just felt I should chime in about it to highlight how so much in the world of music tends to travel full circle.

It was a bit long winded.. and may have come off as a bit condescending (unintentionally) as I could’ve dropped the history, but I was seriously surprised I got to it first cause It’s usually the other way around where I’m learning of it from many others in the comments. How the heck did I get to be first this time? Raymond Scott is pretty awesome though, so I couldn’t ignore his absence down here.. as I guess Rush wanted people to know as well. For such a pretty intricate composition, it’s also showing Rush’s sense of humor to add it suddenly in the middle of the tune. If I recall correctly, it was often featured in cartoon scenes where a robot or other assembly line like automated system is rhythmically pulsing through whatever task it has.

YYZ Live in Rio is another amazing Rush instrumental.

This instrumental is a compositional and technical masterpiece by three of the greatest virtuoso musicians and songwriters in rock and roll, writing and creating in their musical primes. Thanks for reviewing this!

Rush proves that amazing prog can just be damned fun to listen to.

I covered this song in a band a lifetime ago and yes, its as hard as it sounds.

Awesome even today, watching them both play synth with their feet.

This is 78. Genesis released ...and Then There Were Three in 78, there first w/o guitarist Steve Hacket and third since Peter Gabriel left and Phil Collins took up singing. 78 was between Supertramo's Even in The Quietist Moments and Breakfast in America, two of there most successful and recognizable albums. Breakfast was the next to last ST album before Roger Hodgson left the band.

If you've got a bit of spare cash, 'Whitey', the Gibson 355 Alex is playing here (and heard on many, many other Rush songs) is going to auction for charity next month.

Seen them 3 times when I was in high school trying to learn what Neil was doing on drums. 70's. Life changing.

Saw Rush 18 times. Try Bye Thor and the Snow Dog from the Rush in Rio concert next. I also want to recommend The Spirit of Radio from the Maple Leaf Gardens concert 1984 . Geddy's voice was the perfect voice for Rush.

No disrespect. You will convert. :) LOL Hear me out; I am a 48 year HARD CORE RUSH fan. Picked up their debut album when released in 1974. I was 14. Lifelong FAN. My wife absolutely despised Geddy's voice and the band for 30 years. Every time I inserted one of the masterpieces her immediate response was "turn that shit off." And everytime I would tell her very slowly "you don't know what you are missing." When Neil passed she couldn't help but hear/read all of the accolades and said to herself, in her words "oh shit, maybe he was right all along" and started listening. She is now a fan and loves Geddy's voice. It can and will be done. His voice will grow on you. Even if it takes 30 years. :)

I felt the same when I first heard Geddy, but the more I listened to Rush the more I realized he has the perfect voice for their band.

Not another 3 man band that can touch them, masterclass in every instrument and can change flow and tempo like no other

When they first hit the airwaves back in the '70s, I admit that I was turned off by Geddy's voice. As time went on, I'd occasionally hear a new song on the radio that I liked despite his voice, then eventually I came to appreciate what an amazing singer he is. 2112 provides his full range of voice. An instrumental set that you may like is "Where's My Thing? / Here it is!" as performed on their Clockwork Angels tour. It includes a typically amazing drum solo.

I felt the same about Geddy's voice for years, but then when I started to focus on the lyrics of Rush songs along with the band's amazing musicianship, I realized Geddy's voice is perfect to deliver Neil Peart's lyrics. Now I consider Geddy Lee my favorite vocalist behind Roger Daltrey of The Who.

This is a common sentiment. Geddy's voice takes a little getting used to, but in time most people come to really love it. I hated the voice at first, but now it's just a great rock voice.

I wasn't a huge fan of the early years of Geddy's voice, but it deepened over the years, and by the time he sang Ghost of a Chance, he had such a rich, mellow sound. I love how he sounded later in his career.

Up late watching D. Kirshner's "Rock Concert" as a kid, watching a wicked witch running around singing and playing killer bass guitar was so cool. I had to get up early on Saturday to tell my friend best friend what I'd witnessed. We've been hooked every since then, especially when we know what a nice guy (Guys) they are, and so talented at creating interesting music! Never boring.

pulling that off live had my 15yr old self hanging from the rafters back in the day! the most impressive 3 man band i've ever seen. start at the beginning with working man studio version not the time machine tour everyone suggests. the power of that song is guaranteed to get ya!

Geddy's voice grows on you, and changes with age. I think for the better. But this is one of my favorite instrumentals of all time. I like it even more than YYZ.

This was like watching a funeral... The audio version of this video isn't great but the song is absolutely amazing... Rush is amazing and only three guys... WTF...

Rush is a band that has to grow on you. But if you grew up on them you could hear and appreciate the growth. For Rush heads we were well into them by this album.

Not sure what Rush you have done to date, but a lot of people who find Geddy’s voice grating from the early years will find that it mellowed and he found more of his sweet spot as they moved into the 80s and 90s. Try some songs from signals or grace under pressure or power windows to see if it still turns you off. I find it fits their music perfectly from those eras and separates them even further as a band! Ha - yeah, Geddy's voice is an acquired taste. But Rush is one of my favorite bands. This song from the Hemispheres album hit in 1978, so I think it was a little bit after Genesis' progressive rock era (sorry - I'm not a big Genesis fan). But I love Rush, man. The first album I got was 2112 in 1979 or 1980, and I was hooked. "YYZ" is another great instrumental by Rush, but I think you can get used to Geddy's voice. I would recommend the live performance of "Xanadu" from the Exit Stage Left tour. It's better than the recording. Also recommended: the whole 22 minute long first side of 2112; "The Camera Eye"; "Spirit of Radio"; "The Analog Kid"; "Anthem".

If you can ever manage to get past Geddy's voice, which also used to bother me but he grew on me and now I love it, you must check out the album, Hemispheres which is the album this song was originally on. Its so brilliant. Amazing music, amazing lyrics. I think its their best one but its close between that and A Farewell to Kings.

If you haven't already you might prefer songs from the Albums in the 'second half' of their career from Signals to Clockwork Angels. Geddy's voice got a bit more even after working with a vocal coach. Not that I didn’t love his voice before, but others have mentioned it. Although, w more listening you may, too. If you've haven't head these you out might consider: Subdivisions, Analog Kid, Bravado, Stick it Out, Driven, Test For Echo, Working Them Angels, The Way the Wind Blows, Caravan, and The Garden amoung a dozens of others. "Slowly convert you into Rush fans." It happened to me. My best friend bought 2112 and played it for me on the first decent stereo system I ever heard. I didnt like it at all. I did not care for Geddy's voice. That was 1977? Rush is now my favorite band of all time. It happened slowly, over time. By the mid 80's it took hold. The die was cast. I saw the Power Windows tour, 85?, the first time I saw them live, and it was all over. Die hard Rush fan for life. After seeing several of your reaction videos now, it was clear you didnt enjoy this as much as BOC The Vigil. Its ok, I think its entirely plausible you might become fans. Might I suggest "Ghost of a chance" studio version for a good Geddy singing experience.

@@SightAfterDark So I've watched a few of your reaction videos now. One observation. Its hard to tell what Dan is thinking during a reaction. He's probably a good poker player, you cant really tell if he loves it or its just ok. Sifa, on the other hand, you pretty much know exactly whats going on in her brain. The difference between this reaction and BOC the Vigil is stark. And its all cool, we all get it or at least I do. Some music just hits you in the right spot. BOC and Rush do that for me...Supertramp never does and never will.

Maybe check out some of their more semi recent stuff? Geddy is a bit more subdued in the Roll the Bones and Counter Parts albums. Some songs to possibly check out. Heresy (fitting song for what's going on in Ukraine) - Ghost of a Chance - Dreamland - Roll the Bones (a little surprise midway through) - Every Day Glory (the story of my childhood 😕) Anyway, I definitely get it. I think you love or hate Geddy's voice. I dig it and it just fits where they're going instrumentally. Enjoyed the reaction! Take care ✌

Personally my favorite Alex Lifeson guitar work. The beginning of the solo with the volume peddle into the clean channel set such a beautiful mood. Once the distortion kicked in the solo had such a complete progression.

Always liked Farewell to Kings & Hemispheres albums, don't know why they're my favorites. Love the first Lifeson guitar solo, one of my favorites of all time. When they wrote this song, they said they couldn't play it straight through to record it, too hard for them at the time. I wonder if that's why they recorded it "live" in one take here, just to say "yeah no problem now" ? I saw them on the Hemispheres tour, only time I saw them. They were awesome. Would suggest Xanadu next, though it has singing in it ...

Subtitled: "An Exercise in Self-Indulgence". With exception of guitar solo in middle, this was recorded in 1 take. Making the Hemispheres album was so strenuous they almost called it quits. Geddy said the range of whole album was too high even for his goofy voice. It's the proggiest of their albums and imo top 3.

•Geddy Lee's vocalizations are Epic in my eyes, •This was Live but it was not a concert that they were performing at, this was how you made music videos during that particular era,And that was not a one-off, that is exactly how they put down that track in the studio for the record and that is exactly how they play that song Every Single Time it is performed! For me that is a huge reason why I love Rush they played the songs live exactly how they sound on the record

YYZ Live in Rio, if you want to see the greatest crowd reaction ever.

Hell yeah! What a massive crab.... Rush are incredible...... I love Geddy's voice personally and think it's part of what makes them so great.... another epic track by them is "The Camera Eye" from the "Moving Pictures" album.... it does have some vocals but they're super melodic.... YYZ is another instrumental by them too.... great reaction though guys thanks! Oh and maybe try listening to "Ride the singing milk" by "Cat in a tracksuit" it's really stretchy.

That's odd, because one of the things that really draws me to Rush is Geddy's singing. Especially when he really let's it rip on songs like 'Freewill'. His voice is very distinctive, which may turn some people off.

Geddy's voice is a love or hate thing. I can't stand that eunuch voice. Love their instrumentals though

Neils name is pronounced peert. I made the same mistake . Try his drum solo live in Frankfurt Germany

His voice changed a lot over the years. Plus keep in mind he's playing pedals with his feet, keyboards and bass with his hands and belting out lyrics that are complicated in themselves. Read some of the lyrics. Anyways you might like later rush over early rush. His voice mellowed as he got older. Anyways, I've been a musician for over 50 years...I prefer instrumentals really..Here's a great instrumental if you're into it.. This guy is a beast on bass here.
