RUIN IN THE DARK WOODS | Fife, Scotland | Painting Wild Rosehips in Watercolour | Ep34

Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.
This week we are heading out on a relaxing walk, along a 'den' - the Scottish word to describe a steep wooded gorge with a river or stream running through it.
We start in the historic village of Ceres (watch to the bloopers at the end to see how much I struggled with pronouncing that name..!), before plunging into the woods and eventually ending up at a dramatic ruined building which looms up out of the landscape.
The 200 year old limekiln is actually much older in origin, because the people who built it stole the stones from the nearby Craighall Castle to build it! Watch as I explore the ruined building and surrounding caves with my partner in adventure - Jack Spaniels.
There were many more signs of autumn on this walk, not least the slight nip in the air which hints of colder weather to come. I also found lots of beautiful rosehips - the fruit of the wild rose plant and I couldn't wait to try and capture them in watercolour when I got home. Watch to the end to see how I got on...
If you enjoyed this video and you haven't already, please do hit subscribe and check out my other videos - including the three special Skye episodes, where we explore some incredible Scottish scenery. Join me again next week as we explore somewhere else in Scotland and look for painting inspiration...

What a lovely walk. I learn so much from your videos. The glowing mushrooms, and the mushrooms that melt into a tarry mess...so cool! The building was really impressive and I loved the history and learning how they were used. The tearoom was a treat too. You find the best places. I love how they display their goodies under glass on crates. Your rosehips painting is beautiful, so much detail, right down to the spots. The calendar is fantastic! What a great idea. So many of your beautiful works of art all in one place! The thistle was a great choice for the front page. I thoroughly enjoyed this video as I always do. And, love ending with the out-takes for a laugh. Thank you so much!! 🥰

I take it there is a limestone quarry somewhere local. Yes I love seeing nature reclaiming old buildings but also think of the history, of the workers that stoked the kilns and retrieved the quick lime which can be harmful. I love your rosehip painting. Thank you for your channel, it's peaceful and a delight.

What a beautiful walk. The limestone kilns are magnificent. There are abandoned limestone kilns in Michigan, called the Dyer Kiln Ruins. They were last used in 1899, and now are a protected historical site. They sit very much in an open area and an effort is underway to preserve them before they crumble any further. I just received my art print. It is more beautiful than I imagined.

I'm late watching your video again. Saved it for after a busy day to watch in bed. I never knew rosehips were called rosehips till I was in my late teens! I grew up calling them 'itchycoos', when I was wee, people in school used to put them down the back of other peoples shirts, I had it done to me once after school, I had to run all the way home and take a bath 😭 the itch lasts for *ages* as well. But these days I know they're actually rosehips, but I can't imagine ingesting one of those, they are nightmare fuel for me! Thank you for another lovely walk, and beautiful video. 🤗

Sarah, Rose hips when properly harvested make a tea rich in Vitamin C The size of that KIln and the work making indicate that it was very important pre late 19th early 29th century, an amazing structure. At first I thought it was one of those structures to attract Pigeons to harvest their eggs:) I should have realized you would know all about the Rose hips, but I start commenting too early sometimes and find you are way ahead of me:) It's all the subtle colors that bring your art to life it's definitely NOT paint by number:0 Just to show you how crazy things can be, early paint by numbers can bring a lot of money figure that?????? Cheers, Rik Spector
