ST ANDREWS In Autumn | Painting A Conker in Watercolour | Ep37

Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.
This week we are back on dry land with Jack in tow, visiting the historic town of St Andrews - famous for its medieval architecture, Scotland's oldest university, royal first dates, slow motion running, amazing ice cream and of course, being the 'Home of Golf'.
We discover all this and even more of the town, on a beautiful sunny autumnal day. During the walk, I spotted a beautiful shiny conker (a horse chestnut seed) and I couldn't sit to get home to start painting it. Watch to the end of the video to see how I got on with this shiny new challenge.
If you enjoyed this video and you haven't already, please do hit subscribe and check out my other videos - including the three special Skye episodes, where we explore some incredible Scottish scenery. Join me again next week as we explore somewhere else in Scotland and look for painting inspiration...

Great episode of She Runs, She Paints (hat tip to Chariots of Fire)...loved the conker painting, shadow might be nice, I'm sure you can pull it off, but it's perfect as is. I really appreciate you sharing how much time each painting takes...makes me feel a bit more relaxed about how long mine take. The history of the golf ban was a bit shocking, though I don't know why any of human history shocks me any more! 😊Thanks for another great video, and got my Jack Spaniels weekly fix, too ✌🏼

Thanks Colleen! So glad you liked it. I was so undecided about the shadow - I usually really like doing them, but in the photo it’s really big (because of the low autumn sun) that it would put the composition off balance. Doh! 🤦‍♀️

My grandmother used to say that my eyes were darker than a horse chestnut. I still have a couple she gave me years ago. Lovely beach run with Jack and walk through the quaint village. A shadow always adds to a picture to me, but it is beautiful as it is. Thanks Sarah, Willie and Jack!

I remember when I was wee my dad would take me to the woods where there was loads of horse chestnut trees, and we'd spend ages collecting them, and throwing twigs into trees to knock them off. I also did with my son when he was wee, so they bring back good memories for me. I even brought some back from a walk the other day....god knows why 🤣 Those ruins, and the old tombstones looked gorgeous, St Andrew's is steeped in history! That beach also looked amazing, it was probably a dream come true for jack - a never ending horizon of sand and water! I loved your painting, shiny smooth conkers are just so pleasing, and a nice contrast to the jaggy outer layer, you captured the conker beautifully. Thank you for another beautiful video. 🤗

Sarah, When it comes to Golf, I'm a "Gofer"... I go fer the beach not the greens:) The House Sparrows were introduce here many years ago and can be found everywhere. These "Weaver Finches" look at their bills, have almost taken over our back yard feeders ,at times. They are attractive but pests, but they will not go away. Starlings are another bird ,introduced by a Shakespeare lover, who thought America needed romantic species from His writings. They have also spread across the continent and caused a great deal of damage. It's our', not their fault, but they and others are Pandora's boxes, once opened never to be closed. C'Est La Vie:( Cheers, Rik

Sarah, You are absolutely correct about creating your own Black, there are so many shades of "black", that using a BLACK pigment reminds me of painting by numbers, mixing is Verboten:) I sold all kinds of are materials as well as picture framing and painting. People often asked for a color chart to mix secondary colors, when all they needed to know was that a secondary of any of the three primaries was the one left over after mixing the other two. Your skills are so evident, you must have had an excellent Art education enhancing your natural gifts. Cheers, Rik Spector

I really enjoyed watching you paint the image of the conker. When I was in my teens, longer ago than I care to admit, we lived in Ohio, USA and had a horse chestnut tree in our side yard. We called it a buckeye, the state tree of Ohio. My brothers and I would throw them at each other. Maybe that's how they got the name "conkers". That's the sound they made if you got hit in the head.

"Pupatron" 🥰 too cute While most Americans say fall instead of autumn, we do still say autumnal. Maybe because fall-al just doesn't work! 😂 Another word difference, possibly regional in the US, is that we always called conkers "buckeyes". My grandfather used to carry a lucky one around in his pocket.

Another great video! Just to answer your question about the use of the word fall instead of autumn or autumnal. Here, in Massachusetts at least, we use both fall and autumn. I did not know that you have Buckeyes (horse chestnuts) over there. It is supposed to bring you good luck to carry one in your pocket. We have hedge apples (also called orange oak, bow tree, and other names) here. They are supposed to keep spiders and snakes away if you put them under your house. You can't eat a hedge apple. They are green on the outside, there is no fruit or nut inside, they are hard, and bigger than a soft ball. Do you have hedge apples over there? Your painting is beautiful. Jack had a wonderful time, as you both did. It was a perfect day to go for a long walk and visit many interesting spots. Everything looks so beautiful in your videos.
