Ruger "American" Rimfire 22.lr Rifle

Спорт

The Ruger American Rimfire rifle is absolutely packed with features. From the hi-viz Williams front sight, floated barrel, extended magazine release, adjustable trigger to the interchangeable stock modules and the use of 10/22 magazines, I don't know how Ruger have produced it for the price. This rifle allows anyone on a budget to enjoy the fun of shooting!

After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel kzread.infoUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!

I've recently been getting back into 22LR rifles. I learned how to shoot rifles as a kid back in the 90s, with a single-shot bolt-action 22LR. Now I have an RAR in 22LR. Got my Vortex scope zeroed at 50 yards. It's such a fantastic varmint gun.

Fantastic rifle especially for the price!! I took my Ruger American .243 Compact hunting out west a little over a month ago. Not one jam, no problems at all. It ran really well, and only cost $450! The rimfire version looks similar, but the advantage would be the magazines. I only have one Ruger American magazine, and have not seen any for sale in any shops here. I'm not going to go through paperwork to do something so simple like ordering one from the USA. The Ruger 10/22 magazines are everywhere!

Good review, I've owned four 7722 over the last 40 years all were tack drivers no trigger issues. A ruger 1022 needed a return and a new barrel but after that no issues. Can't believe ruger stopped making the 7722 rifles and went with this I've seen many reviews and some good some bad. This one seems to shoot OK , would probably buy one to go with my 7722 vbz 22 mag and 7722 international ss 22 lr. It's all in the ammo in a 22 and the patience to find the one she likes, and then again the complainers to you folks I say some folks can shoot and some folks can't just the facts of life.

I'm glad you told us it is a target crown. I wouldn't have guessed. I had to recrown my own barrel because Ruger denied my return. She said the accuracy was within their standards. Well it wasn't within my standard. So I was out to a rough start with my RAR 22". Initially I thought that the bolt has a bit of slop in the receiver. But it is not something I really notice. I have come around to a liking for the gun and it's hard to not like the fabulous blue finish and the modular stock. And when my friends are jealous to have one it makes me glad that I purchased it.

Great review, as usual ! I allow myself to give you some advice regarding the ammunition tests you will do in your future reviews with 22lr ammunition: Every time you switch to another ammunition brand and type, you should shoot at least 10 to 15 rounds to "lead" down your barrel with the new ammunition ! This is crucial for accuracy. Every brand uses different types of lead bullets, lubricants and powders, your barrel first has to get used to it ! Believe me, I have done a lot of testing and shooting with 22lr rifles (Anschütz, Grünig & Elmiger, Walther, Feinwerkbau, Rieder & Lenz, Bleiker...) and ammunition (Eley, RWS, SK, Lapua, CCI, Fiocchi...) ! Friendly regards from Switzerland !

I just brought this rifle home yesterday. For the money I couldn't find anything nicer in its class. I have always liked the Ruger rotary magazines, and the trigger it outstanding. I was happy to see how well the standard CCI 40gr. round grouped in this rifle as I have allot of these now. i will have to see how my rifle likes them. Now I need to just top it with a nice Leupold 2-7x33 and add a bipod and it should make a great plinker and small game hunter. Nice review.

Using Wolf Extra Match I can shoot a nickle size target at 50 yds 8 of 10 times & hit a 3 inch target at 100 yds with every shot from a benchrest. I have a order of SK STD Plus ammo coming soon since the Wolf is hard to find. The more common brands of 22LR are just OK, CCI Mini Mag is the best of the common so far.

Was debating between this and a Savage B22, the Rugers accuracy is acceptable for my uses. I have a Glenfield Model 20 for an accurate rifle. The Savage should be an obvious choice but out of the 3 I’ve handled, all have FTF issues from mag to stock fitment. I want something tough, with 10rd rotary mags that actually work, and decent irons. I’m thinking the 18in with quick detach rings and a BSA Sweet 22 scope would be a nice truck gun combo

On the back of your excellent review and the equally enthusiastic recommendation from my local gun shop, I recently purchased one of these. Unfortunately, the Aussie dollar was already on a slide and I paid $520 for mine. I'm not complaining though, this little gem of a 22LR has got to be one of the best bargains out there. Like yourself, I'm struggling to see how Ruger do it for the price. I guess I'll have to wait and see how she goes over the long term, but so far I'm thinking this was a brilliant purchase !

hey mate, sorry I never got back to you. honestly I couldn't be happier with it for the price, shoots incredibly well with factory ammo, it seems to prefer Winchester over some of the CCI stuff. Only thing I can fault is a case sometimes getting stuck in the barrel after shooting, and the broom stick stock. I am in the process of getting a boyds pro varmint stock for it to give it a better appearance.

hey mate awsome review I now own one myself , my dad has 100 acers here in western australia were I can hunt and do some shooting , I first purchased the ruger with the wood stock , but after a couple of days I noticed the wood starting to split, but no worries i had it sorted and replaced for a synthetic stock . iv now bought a pepper laminated wood stock from boyds and its a beautiful little rifle now , this is my first gun I put a cheap $150 artic fox scope on it but am now lookibg to upgrade , iv been looking into the redfeild , how is your scope going ? would you recommend it? wat do you think about the BDS dial?

  • @ozziereviews

    @ozziereviews

    7 жыл бұрын

Nice purchase Nathan, the Boyds stocks certainly are a nice upgrade mate... as for the scope, yes the Redfield is fine and will do the job. You don't really need a BDS dial on a 22, as most shots will be 50-75 yards in all reality, but if you choose one, go for one with the specific 22lr drop compensators on the reticle. The Nikon P22 rimfire scope does this perfectly and is about $230, but personally being your first rifle and one you will probably keep for many years to come, do yourself a favour and put some quality on it. The Leupold rimfire scopes are excellent and won't break the bank, take a look at them... www.nioa.com.au/products/browse/_optics_leu_scope_le12

2Wheels Australia This is a really hard call, I don't like the bolt throw on the 77/22 as it's too high and I find it catches my hand on the scope at times… The American on the other hand has the shorter bolt throw and you are well and truly clear of the scope. The 77/22 feel a little classier to me over the American, mainly because of the solid bolt but the American is also made well. Accuracy for both rifles is great, so I guess it would come down to do you want to save money? If so buy the American, if you can afford to spend more, get the 77/22. The other plus to the 77/22 is the option of the heavy barrel varminter version which I feel would have an edge in accuracy compared to the other models. So it comes down to what you want the rifle for, range? hunting? plinking? or a combination? As for the calibre, this is will depend on your use. The 22lr is the most versatile cartridge going to me because you can use short range plinking ammo like CCI quiet to have similar fun to an air rifle, you have sub-sonic and match ammo for the range and you have the high and hyper velocity ammo for hunting and extra knockdown. For example the CCI Velocitor ammo is nibbling on the heels of the 22magnum in regards to performance but if you are looking for a rifle mainly for hunting and not repetitive plinking or range work, the 22mag offers a lot. You can get the lighter 30gr VMAX style factory ammo right up to 50gr hollow point factory ammo, so it's a great choice for humane knockdown at typical 22mag distances (up to 150 yards). You will pay double for 22mag ammo tho so at the end of the day - the choice is yours… I have a need for both so I bought both :)

Thanks so much for the review Ozzie. Brilliantly unbiased and without any nonsense. Paid my deposit on the 22lr RAR Standard and rifle is now waiting at my dealer while I am navigating through the incredibly long winded license application. While I fully support regulation of firearm ownership there does seem to be a disconnect in some areas. For somebody that carried a rifle for an occupation I’m not really sure what a one day course at TAFE is going to teach me, but there it is. And the whole Corona thing seems to be significantly adding to the complexities. Anyways - on to my question. This would be my first privately owned firearm, and need your advice on ammunition choice (in my previous life you shot what you were given!!). Out of all the rounds you tested it seemed one of them outperformed the others - I think it was SK HV? I fully understand that different rifles can “prefer” different ammunition, but does that also extend to different rifles of exactly the same make, caliber and model? In other words, when I finally get to pick my bloody rifle up, am I safe enough to load up with the SK HV ammo?

I know this question was not aimed at me however, that ammo may work well but I would not go hog wild on any ammo at first. Get boxes of 50 of several different kinds so you can try them out. Regardless of it being the "same rifle" or not all rifles vary slightly so they may like different ammo. I have put tens of thousands of rounds down range.

@@1991USsoldier Well in China you can shoot only in designated ranges as a novelty experience sort of thing. And those ranges are rare and not cheap. You're definitely not allowed to own a firearm. But I'm in Australia and the law here is we can own bolt action rifle or pistols only: no auto or semi-auto rifles. I was talking about AUD$580. And a box of 50 CCI standard velocity costs ~AUD$7. So yeah, the price you mentioned that's a real bargain.

It really depends on your use, the Lithgow is a little heavier than the RAR, so if it's weight you're concerned about I'd be going for the RAR over the Lithgow. If you want something that is cheap and still accurate, the RAR offers a lot of features for the price… The Lithgow on the other hand is a heavier profile rifle and accurate, great to use and it gives you a sense of pride to owner an Australian made rifle that offers great features too… I like both rifles hence the reason I bought both!

It shoots straight too and I'd actually prefer it over the CZ myself. That's my view on it anyhow…

  • @ozziereviews

    @ozziereviews

    8 жыл бұрын

2 different rifles for 2 different uses... You need to be honest with yourself and look at what you will be doing with the rifle. If you're going mostly to the range, with the odd bit of plinking on a rural property, I'd be leaning towards the Lithgow. If you intend on hunting and shooting on a rural property where you're likely to be walking great distances, I'd be leaning towards the Ruger as it's a lot lighter to carry around. If you're intending on setting up and waiting for game to come in, I'd lean towards the Lithgow. So in a nutshell, are you going to be using the rifle to walk around hunting or are you most likely going to be using it at the range or stationary mostly? For me, I just bought both... then my issues were solved :)

Ozziereviews, I really enjoy your vids and will be subscribing. I am a retired soldier and after taking a bit of a hiatus from shooting (after multiple deployments), I'm back at it. And while I do have bigger caliber guns, 22 is my favorite due to it being a fun round that is also economical. So far, I'm a ruger 22 guy and have a few different Ruger rimfire guns, but no bolt actions yet. Does the 22 round reach it's max velocity out of the compact version or does the extra length of the standard barrel help in that regard? I will probably just get the standard, but I see that ruger now has a bull barrel version of this. I don't have heavy barrel on my 10-22s so not sure I need it on this though. FYI, I enjoyed your Ruger Charger review as well! You are a good shot and show the potential of these guns vs some guys on the tube shooting fist sized groups blaming the gun. Thanks.

Thanks Scott, firstly thank you for your Service. Unlike most centrefire cartridges, the 22lr doesn't need a 20"+ barrel for optimal velocity. You will shoot just as well with a 18" barrel as what you will with a 20", I have never noticed any difference other than longer barrels in the 22lr do tend to slow the velocity slightly. Take a look at my KIDD 10/22 review, these really are my favourites and if you want superior accuracy in a semi-auto, I don't think you will beat them: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6pmxdZuqpfMpLQ.html

+Patrick Takada I've been shooting for a long time but have finally decided to get a class A (rimfire/shotgun) class B (Centrefire) licence in NSW Australia. The whole process will probably take me 2-3 months but I think 95% of Australias gun laws are well thought out.... Licenced guns, storage safes, permits to acquire, gun safes, police checks, registering guns are a bit painful but if it saves 1 life then it is worth it imho. The laws don't stop people getting hand guns and semi autos but you need to jump through a few more hoops to get them. Most people i talk to (including shooters) are generally happy with them. The main parts of our laws i don't agree with are 1) pump actions/semi auto rimfire are class C and 2) rimfire suppressors are restricted. I am probably leaning towards a RAR22 over the CZ452.... Thanks for the great review.

+Wadeftt IS it really worth ANY amount of effort and sacrifice to "save one life" ?? Because IF that were REALLY true then all kinds of things are neglected that would save MANY MANY lives if everyone truly honestly believed that....all sorts of dangerous things could be ULTRA regulated and many lives would be saved IF your statement is really what society believes "that even one life saved makes it worth it" In fact many many dangerous pastimes ought to be OUTLAWED altogether including non essential driving.... SO many lives...INNOCENT lives could be saved if all frivolous driving were prohibited and enforced with check points and papers showing destination and purpose. Also how about licenses to drink alcoholic beverages ...many lives are lost because people drink that are not as mentally healthy as most people...they will on average have a tendency to foolish dangerous or misbehavior anger issues etc....if a whole bunch of grief for everyone is REALLY worth saving "even one life" then ALL SORTS of opportunities are quite frankly being ignored Personally I think the answers lie in spending more effort and money on troubled PEOPLE that will misuse guns (and every other thing also)..... Are we going to slowly erode all freedoms to accommodate dangerous people? Seems like that is the intent...keep everyone "safe" from one another...mommy daddy government slowly destroying all quality of life for the sake of inner circle's wisdom of "what is best" ...hint it aint never going to happen that government keeps people "safe" because government is not a soul. not a heart, it is cold heartless TOOL for the mealy mouth do gooder know alls and THEIR agenda for what THEY in their godlike wisdom think is "best for all"....gagging on it!

+scott stribbling I get asked this question a lot... it depends on what you are doing, hunting, walking around all day on a property, range work or a combination? Why I say this is because the Ruger American is a great lightweight rifle that is fantastic value for the price, it's accurate, I love the 10/22 compatibility with the mags and it's just a great all-round plinker. On the other hand the Lithgow is quality and made right here in Australia which is a massive plus to me... They are very accurate and now offer a variety of different stock and finish combinations. Currently with our Australian dollar being very low compared to the US, I see the Ruger American Rimfires are around the $600 mark, whereas the Lithgow has remained the same at around $900. The lithgow is a heavier profile 22 over the Amercian, so if you were doing range work, or wanting an accurate shooter on the farm where you're just setup with a bi-pod plinking or shooting rabbits etc, I would go for the Lithgow, but if you wanted something that was easier to carry around in the field on long hikes etc, I'd go the Ruger... for me, I wanted both so I bought both, but from a lot of people who have asked me the same question as you, most of them have gone for the Lithgow and every one of them have emailed me since saying that they are over the moon with their Lithgow, they love the finish, look and accuracy of the rifle. In saying that too the Ruger American owners have enjoyed their rifles too... so at the end of the day Scott it depends on what your use of the rifle is going to be?

Depending on which State you live in, you can buy it if you can find one available for sale here as it's cat-a if used with a cat-a firearm. You can't import them unless you're a feral pest controller with a cat-d licence, but keep an eye out online here in Australia as they pop up from time to time...

I've gone to shopruger.com but it won't let me buy anything from the website because I'm not an American citizen. How the bloody hell do Aussies buy accessories from the web page??

ministickman01 There are no mag limits for cat-a in Queensland, although if the powers-to-be get their way with the current NFA overhaul, there certainly will be...

***** Great rifle i have 1 of these and had to do a lot of experimenting with ammunition, i found it doesn't seem to like the ultra high velocity stuff take Winchester Lasers for example i could shoot circles round 1 of your targets i could never get it to sight in where id' like let alone group. Best grouping Ammunition i have found since variety is a bit limited in Tassie has been RWS High Velocity HP and the Winchester Super X 555 box of bullets, other rounds like Winchester powerpoint 42gr and the American Eagle you fired i also wasn't very impressed with!

That's the fun of having rimfire, just testing the various ammo, but once you find one that works, it'll be a great shooter for years to come!

would you say that Queensland has the most lenient gun laws in the country or in your opinion which state does ? I know that there are not a lot of differences (50.bmg not being legal in Qld ) but I have herd there are some fairer laws there would love to know your views on the matter.

Mayor McCheese In 1996 we were all sold the sales pitch of National Gun Laws, but it couldn't be further from the truth as you've discovered… Some things in QLD are in my view absolutely ridiculous but in many other ways we have better laws compared to other States, so I guess it all evens out in the end. I just know one thing, I'm glad I don't live in NSW or WA, they have absolutely stupid laws that do nothing for public safety and simply target law abiding firearm owners, making it as restrictive and as hard as possible with no impact on crime…
