RR7823B A SETTLEMENT UNDER FIRE

(5 Jun 1978) RR7823B A SETTLEMENT UNDER FIRE
It is half way through Rhodesia's most important year.
Premier Ian Smith has pledged to hand over power
before December 31st 1978 in the country's first
one-man-one-vote election. Meanwhile, an interim
government comprising Mr. Smith himself and three
moderate black leaders is running Rhodesia, until it
becomes independent Zimbabwe. Their "Internal Settlement"
though is under fire - quite literally - from the
guerrillas of ZANU and ZAPU, the constituent parties
of the Patriotic Front. Mr. Smith's plan is to protect the
rights of the whites and the chance of an orderly
transition, if the guerrillas will let him.

What an absolute mess; to be fair though, I am not up to date with development in Zimbabwe since Mr Mugabe left office. I did see a few clips referring to occupied farms been returned to original owners. Maybe things are getting better. I often wonder just how different things could have turned out had their been closer relations between Rhodesia and South Africa. Yes, I know the BSAP helped in the war, some aircraft was loaned to the Rhodesian army etc but I also believe that South Africa cut off - or limited supplies like fuel from getting into Rhodesia. A life - regardless of what their nationality is - is precious....

Britain would never back a racist regime like Rhodesia. And Northern Ireland wants to stay in the U.K. because they are Protestant.

@@SymphonyBrahms Rhodesia was not simply a case of "Black and white". It was simply anti marxist/communist. Black majority rule was not possible due to the extremely large Soviet and Chinese influence in Africa. The only reasonable way was to have both Black and White working together for a better outcome. Rather than political hegemony resulting in a dictatorship. Which is what inevitably resulted due to interference from the American government of Jimmy Carter who's ambassador Andrew Young completely squiffed the whole affair by making it a racial issue rather than that of political ideology. As for Northern Ireland, which I have always considered a huge waste of time and tax payer's money.

Politics. That’s what it boils down to. Imagine if Thatcher had backed Rhodesia, just imagine the left-wing reaction. She wouldn’t have still been in power.

A lot of countries were colonies A lot of indigenous people got fuct over . Seems like once Rhodesia fell many wanted to balance out the past by taking from and attacking white countrymen and so-called sympathizers. I think it’s unrealistic to give back something you and your family worked for maybe for generations . That being said it would make sense to work towards unity and balance out government positions and land ownership . I think the collapse of Colonies like Rhodesia show the pitfalls of colonialism. But asking people that may have had nothing to do with it and may have not agreed with it to give up everything and leave their homes and businesses is unreasonable and unrealistic. What a fucked up problem to have to solve.
