Royal Enfield Meteor 350 - Buddy Visits Alcudia De Monteagud & ER Goes For A Walk Around

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hi there !
So, the wind finally abated and we had a calm sunny day once more at last.
I took the opportunity to let Buddy "stretch his wheels" after a long layup.
We went to Alcudia de Monteagud, a village we have been to before but have never really explored.
So this time I decided to take a walk around this interesting little village.
Then you get to join me on the beautiful ride home as I talk about various trivial things.
I know, you can't wait, right ?
I hope you enjoy this one. If nothing else, it contains lots of blue sky and winter sunshine.
If you do enjoy me exploring places on foot, please let me know in the comments section and I might do a bit more of this sort of thing in the future ( although I'm not a huge fan of walking, obviously ! )

Thanks for the mention Garry, it's much appreciated. I got my favourite map out straight away, and I've found Alcudia de M, I just love those village squares and I was transported back there. Next trip can't come soon enough. Thanks for this one - more unfinished business! 😊👍😎

Hi Martin, yes, definitely a ride we could do together, if you'd like. Depending upon the time we get there, you can get a nice bit of tapas in the "bar with a view" in Alcudia de M. Then take the road out and maybe take the mountain road, which I skipped for this one due to time constraints. Certainly one of my favourite roads and areas to ride in and one which you didn't quite manage to do this year. Have a great Christmas with the family Martin ! Take care, Garry & Ruby

It's all your fault I'm not getting videos out. Well, you and Saddlebags 73 and a few others because I would rather watch these quality videos than edit my own. So you're the reason I'm two years behind. Loved the twisty road and the cute little town. Thanks for taking us along somewhere we would never get to enjoy if it weren't for you.

Thanks MAMRE, too kind as usual ! I was just so relieved to finally have some decent riding weather. Buddy had been parked up for a month at least, which always makes me feel terribly guilty ! But the long wait made this lovely ride on a fantastic day all the more enjoyable. So nice in fact that I was even prepared to get off the bike and walk around for a bit, just because it was so nice to be outside in the sunshine and no wind trying to tear my head off ! It was a lovely afternoon and I was delighted to be able to share it with you all 🤗 Cheers MAMRE, stay safe and enjoy ! Garry & Ruby

Thanks Exmouth. Aye, cracking day this was. I was out on Norman yesterday, equally nice but again in the late afternoon, so I was being blinded by the low sun again. When will I learn ? 🤷‍♂ I guess I just have to ride when I can, pushed for time and opportunities at the moment. My next video unfortunately also needs to be watched with sunglasses on 😎 Still, people in the UK say that they enjoy a dose of winter sunshine and I'm certainly giving them that in spades at the moment ! 😂 Thank you for encouraging me to do the live streams. I would never have tried it without having you as my wingman Steve 🙂, so it's all your fault ! 😂 It's also a great excuse for me to go out and treat myself to a few cans of "proper beer" from time to time 👍🏻 Cheers Steve and much love to the Exmouth crew, Garry & Ruby ❤

I have yet to see anyone living or out sipping a coffee or glass of something intoxicating in these villages. It's like a land version of the Marie Celeste. Is it actually a village or stage set? I can just imagine Clint Eastwood (somewhat older than in 'A fistful of Dollars') wandering out from behind a cardboard building, chewing on a cheroot. Oh how lovely to ride on dry roads with you and Buddy though. Seize the day most definitely. Would Ruby actually mind having her sossidges in the dark 🤣🤣. My best wishes to you both for the festive season ❤❤

Hi Peter, yes, I can understand why they decided to film spaghetti westerns here. You are unlikely to be disturbed during filming if you film in the afternoons, just about anywhere around here 😝 I think I read on Google that the village has 1200 registered inhabitants. I'm guessing that a large number of those have a house there as a holiday home for the summer. I did hear voices coming from the bar and a nice lady passed me and said hello, so it's certainly not deserted. But I was there in the afternoon, when most folks here are indoors, taking a siesta. But there was definitely at least one cat out and about, as this video proves ! That road was so nice to ride in that weather and on Buddy. I really want to do it again, next time the weather is compatible. 🥰 I was out on a trail with Norman yesterday and got blinded by the low sun once again. Not nice. I couldn't see the ruts or where I was going ! Serves me right for going out after work I guess 🤷‍♂ Still, I managed not to crash, so it was a great success 👍🏻 So for that video, once again, sunglasses will be required 🤗 You are probably right that Ruby wouldn't mind 'night sossidges' but I'm not too sure how the GoPro would cope with filming it, so it was good to get back just before it got dark 🙂 Cheers Peter and just in case I don't get a chance to say it again, have a Merry Christmas ! Hi Jeff, that's probably best. Don't tell us what you're up to and then surprise us. Like you did with Norma and then The Bee 👍🏻 I hope you appreciated the cashpoint with a view, the quest for a gateway continues. It's getting to the point now that I am thinking of taking a gate with me on my travels, just so that I can prop it up somewhere anytime there is a nice view ( which is often, of course. ) 😂 Just need to figure out how I'm going to lash it down ! Maybe IKEA do flat-pack gates ? Have a great Christmas and a great 2024 you two. I am currently viewing 2024 with some trepidation because 2023 went reasonably well and historically speaking, that sort of thing tends not to continue for too long 😂🤞 Take care you two and thanks for your content in 2023 - it's great seeing other people having holidays after all 😂 Love from Spain, Garry & Ruby

Again, a nice outing. Always, just about as many people as I care to see as well(lol). I have to wait until about 2AM to get streets that clear. Xmas just gives a good excuse to give Tink her favorite fresh chicken. Gives the waiting "sossidges" (hot dogs) a false sense of security for a couple of days. All the best , though, for a pleasant holiday and better riding weather on the horizon!

Hi Mark, yes, I was a bit of a loner before I moved to Spain anyway but now it appears that I am a loner out of necessity 😂 The only time I really have dealings with "people" is when I have to go out to get some shopping. Other than that, I always seem to have to make do with the best of company i.e. myself and Ruby 😝 Ruby says that she likes the sound of fresh chicken Tink, I don't think she's ever had it. Well, I certainly haven't given it to her. But she is looking forward to turkey at Christmas. She is going to her Granny's for lunch and Granny always gives her and Polly ( Polly is Ruby's auntie, who you might have seen in a couple of videos, when she has been staying with us ) their own little plates with their own little Christmas dinner on it 😂 They usually finish their plates before we have even started ours. It seems to be a race to get it down quickly to make sure that they get back to the table in time to engage full "scrounging mode" as we eat ours. Have a great Christmas you lot and yes, here's hoping for some decent riding weather around Christmas and New Year. It would be nice to get out and catch some fresh air. Hopefully there won't be too many people about either 😉 ! Cheers, Garry & Ruby

Awww thanks James, so kind of you ! Sorry, this comment didn't appear as "new" for some reason, so I've only just discovered it today 🤷‍♂️ I really appreciate the feedback because I'm not sure if people prefer to see just the ride or also a little bit of the life of the region. I did ask for this feedback in the video description, which most people don't bother to read, but maybe I will ask the viewers in a future video as well. But now at least I know that you enjoy seeing a little bit of walking about on my travels, so thanks for letting me know 👍🏻 It is something I want to do more of because it will slow me down a bit. Usually I am in too much of a rush to get back home to Ruby 🤷‍♂️ Aye, that bit of road with the wide view and the flowing bends is an absolute peach. Definitely one of my favourites. I will show you the mountain road way home in a future video because that's also very scenic and fun to ride. ER live 3 will definitely be happening, as long as Exmouth is still up for it 😉 Hopefully we will discuss chaps, codpieces and cheese in a bit more depth next time. If we have time, we might even talk about bikes for a bit, but I wouldn't bet your house on it ! Have a great Christmas yourself James. I am sure you will. I'm sure that Mrs Ainsworth will take this rare opportunity to pamper you for a change. Don't fight it James. You deserve it after spoiling her all year 😉 Cheers James, see you after Christmas ! We seem to quite often have 8C one day, then 18C the next, then back to 8C the following day. It's a job to know what gear to wear. You literally have to go outside and feel what the temperature is like today. One day it's t-shirt under mesh jacket weather, the next it's winter jacket with liner and base layer weather. Very unpredictable ! Still loving Buddy for these kind of relaxing rides and Norman is growing on me too, as I get more confident on the trails. I'm really happy with the two bikes I have at the moment, just wish I had more time to use them 😭 I'll keep things crossed that you can get out for a longer ride on the Hunter soon Phil 🤞 Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours Phil. Thanks Pete, we wish you all the best for Christmas and 2024 too ! I get the feeling that 2024 will go one of two ways for me ( for reasons ! ). I'm desperately hoping that it goes the GOOD way ! 🤞 It's funny, but judging by the comments, quite a few of us bikers are not Christmas people 😝 I suppose solitude is a part of what makes motorcycling so therapeutic for most of us ( even though we do at times ride with others, we probably all started out riding alone ), so maybe it's not SO surprising. I recall being ambivalent towards Christmas, even as a kid. I just felt that it never lived up to the hype. My attitude hasn't ever changed, really. I shall start Christmas Day with a can of beer for breakfast ( a once a year treat, I assure you ! ), then later I'll walk over to my Mum's with Ruby for Christmas lunch, then probably back home for more beers 🤪 It's a shame that you're working over Christmas but at least, as you say, it gives you an excuse to avoid most of the madness ! I actually went out and filmed my first trail ascent yesterday. It wasn't the "Trail of Death", it was an easier one, but it was an absolute piece of cake, well apart from the low sun blinding me for most of it ! The Himalayan seems to have the torque, as long as you're in the right gear with a bit of momentum, to go up anything without too much clutch feathering. So following yesterday's success, the next ascent will be the "Trail of Death" and after that I will feel confident enough to tackle new, unknown to me trails with some degree of confidence. And that's why I started this whole off-road thing in the first place, to explore, so really excited to get started with it asap ! Cheers Pete. Here's hoping that you get some dry days around Christmas and New Year to enjoy that lovely Suzuki of yours ! Hmmmm...Suzuki.....🤔 Love from Spain, Garry & Ruby ❤

Hi Bob, well I hope you get your little oil leak sorted soon but at least it's not so bad if you wouldn't be riding anyway. Definitely give salted roads and -1C a miss ! 🥶 Actually, our service intervals are always km or time elapsed. In the User Manual the first three service intervals for the 350s are listed as 500 km ( or 6 weeks ), 5000 km ( or 6 months ), and then 10000 km ( or 6 months ). After that, every 5000 km ( or 6 months ). Every second 6 month service is the big one, the one with the valve adjustment, the one I call the 12 month service. Since I have never managed 5000 km in one six month period ( because I share my mileage between two bikes ) I am always on the 6 month / 12 month cycle with both bikes. Over there I would imagine that the service intervals ARE SUPPOSED TO BE every 5000 km or 6 months too but probably the dealers do what they like. I've heard of dealers in Spain telling customers that the service interval is 10000 km or 12 months but if you look in the User Manual it clearly states that there is a second service ( mainly a safety check, not even with an oil change ) every 5000 km or 6 months ( as usual, whichever comes first ). But if your dealer is happy maintaining your warranty with just one service every 10000 km or every year, I wouldn't worry about it. Anybody can do the six month service at home, it's just check, adjust and lubricate as required ( again, all listed in the User Manual ). Glad you enjoyed this video Bob, I certainly enjoyed getting out on Buddy again after a long layoff ! It was also great to be out walking without the wind trying to rip my head off for once ! A Merry Christmas to you and the crew Bob and of course tummy tickles to Sydney too ! ❤🐕 Garry & Ruby

😎Yes the manual mentions the time frame but going back to my first bike in the 60’s no dealer has ever expected that to be followed. At most mileage or once a year and I have had a few warranty issues with no pushbacks. As someone else mentioned are there no other residents in Spain🤔 rarely are there any people or vehicles in your videos😎

@@bobkidd802 Hi Bob, well as long as the dealer is still happy to put in warranty claims on your behalf, that's all that matters. Spanish dealers do however insist on the 6 month intervals, presumably because the Spanish importer refuses to forward their warranty claims otherwise. I think the main reason that you rarely see other people in my videos is that I tend to be out and about in the afternoon, when most people in southern Spain are taking their siesta. From 14:00-16:00 or 17:00 most people here are indoors resting. Not me of course, I'm not from around here, so I power through the whole day without a nap and prefer to go out on my bikes 😂 If I were to go out on a weekday at 9am or 1pm, I'm sure you'd see a fair bit more traffic and other people in my videos. Fortunately for me, it's usually nearly 2pm before I am ready to go for a ride and it's usually on the weekend, so there is a strong possibility that everybody else will be indoors having a snooze 😝👍🏻 Cheers Bob. We hope that you and Sydney have a great Christmas ! All the best ! Garry & Ruby ❤🐕

Hi John, thank you so much, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the video, I enjoyed going out to make it ! Still trying to figure out what that farm machine was. My guess is, considering what the village is renowned for, that it is indeed a threshing machine. It would make sense if their main harvest was wheat I suppose but I don't actually know for a fact. Yes, we are very lucky that most of the rounds around here are in mountains ( i.e. twisty ) and generally have a very good surface. You just have to watch out for little piles of gravel or goat poop mid-bend from time to time 🙂 Ruby and I are both big fans of the Dax. It's named after a "sossidge" dog after all ! ❤🐕 One of those would be great fun, I'm sure you'll enjoy it once the weather permits John ! I will keep things crossed for some dry weather for you soon, so that you can get out and enjoy your ever increasing "Honda collection" 🙂 Love from Spain and a Merry Christmas to you both John and Linda, Garry & Ruby

I think like you the machine was a Threshing machine . In the village I grew up in they had similar at the farm nearby , run by a large flat belt off the p t o on the tractor . have just put the first 10 miles on the DAX . the roads are still damp and muddy so have got some cleaning to do . its not too bad ,just spray ,no salt on these back lanes . till next time ,john and linda .

@@johnbellamy6449 Aha, thanks for that John. Well in that case it almost certainly was a threshing machine. I found the combination of wooden frame with metal panels in the construction to be quite fascinating. Never seen that before, would have expected a machine of that age to be all metal in construction. It's fair to say that the wooden parts failed first, they were not in great shape ( the Spanish summer sun really dries out anything made of wood ! ). Enjoy cleaning the little "sossidge" dog John, such a fun machine ! 🙂 Take care you two 🙂 Garry & Ruby

😂 Every four years, "Like the World Cup" - love it Simon ! Yes indeed. It would be far better for the planet. A really great austerity measure for those families struggling financially too. I would back your plan !!! Yes, the surface of that particular road is impeccable, apart from a few stones in the road, which can get washed down if we've had a lot of rain. I enjoyed this ride so much that I will probably do it again, as soon as we get another nice day when I also have the time to get over there ( it's about an hour from home, that one ). Yes, Buddy is under warranty until June. So I only have the January service 🥶 and then the one in June and then I can do what I like. I think that I will then just do the 6 month service at home ( check, adjust and lubricate as necessary - sounds easy ) and then drop the bike off at the dealership in the summer every year to get the oil changed and the valves adjusted. They seem to do a good job with that, so as long as that remains the case, I'm happy to pay them to do it for me. Cheers Simon, enjoy ( endure ? ) Christmas ( alcohol helps 😝 ) and hugs to Chilli ❤ Garry & Ruby

G'day Gary, Sydney's roads are awful, too many lanes and too many cars. European roads are definitely better for bikes. However, I do like taking my trail bike off road here to get away from the traffic. Where you live looks idyllic. What's the closest international airport? Is your RE dealer planning to get the new Himalaya in the near future? Would value your opinion. Have you fitted a battery trickler to Buddy. Thinking about fitting on to my RE Classic but looks pretty difficult. Thinking about buying a new battery with four terminals to fit a trickler. Merry Christmas to you and Ruby and all the best for the NY! Quent

Hi Quent, yes, I have noticed that you lot tend to have a lot of lanes on the roads around your urban centres. Plenty of scope for chaos there with people trying to get across the lanes, I imagine. I don't think I'd enjoy it either mate ! I don't know what it is about Andalusia but somehow the local government seems to prioritise road infrastructure in their budgeting. They seem to completely resurface roads as soon as they start to break up, rather than patch them up for decades, like they would in the UK. The road in this video was pretty high up, they probably get a lot of ice up there in the winter and yet somehow, the road surface remains perfect. I suppose part of that is the relatively low volume of traffic the roads have to deal with but on my travels I do often encounter the road maintenance squads spray painting imperfections in the road surface, presumably for somebody to come up with a schedule to go out and repair it. I still manage to find terrible road surfaces from time to time but more often than not they are extremely remote roads where the local residents have been happy with dirt and gravel for centuries, they don't really expect to have tarmac, so they are probably low down on the list of priorities ! We have an airport in Almeria. It does have direct flights to some countries but very few these days. When I have to go to Düsseldorf, I have to fly from Almeria to Madrid and then from Madrid to Düsseldorf. For you, the easiest way would probably be to fly to Madrid. From there you could fly to Malaga ( where there are many bike hire places ! ) or Almeria ( where there are none ). If you were thinking of a riding holiday, I think Madrid-Malaga would be your best bet. Then pick up a bike and head east towards Almeria. For context, Malaga is just over three hours from here if you take the motorway. If you are ever planning a trip to Spain and need any further help or advice, feel free to ask me 👍🏻 I always fit maintenance chargers to every bike I buy. Here is a video of how I fitted one to my Classic as soon as I got it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/imetksN9YrjegNY.htmlsi=OZO4S0MWkiQYDCp- It's a bit tight for space in the battery box and side cover ( to stuff the excess cable into ) but it can be done. Just slide the rubber battery holder out until you can get to the battery terminals, connect the cable, push everything carefully back in ( just being careful not to crush or stress any cables as you do so ) and then feed the charging connector end through the gap in the side panel. As long as the wire isn't being pinched it will be fine. In my video you can see that even with the side panel closed, the cable could still move freely, there was enough of a gap. I don't think a battery with four terminals would help to be honest. There may not be the space to attach anything to them. I'd just do what I did. Just treat all cables with respect, you don't want to break a wire, that could lead to all sorts of problems. The cheapo charger I fitted in the video was absolutely fine. Still using it on Norman the Himalayan. Without a maintenance charger, I was replacing batteries every 1-2 years ( because I don't ride every day, just once a week if I'm lucky ). Since I started fitting them, I haven't bought a single battery. The one on my scooter must be 12 years old by now and it still has enough power to fire up the electric starter. I highly recommend maintenance chargers Quent. I think they do save you a lot of money on replacement batteries, particularly if you don't ride your bike daily. I will be at the dealership in January for a Meteor service and I will find out if they are getting a 452 in as a demo bike. I really hope so and I suspect that they might 🤞 By the end of January we should know. So, I hope this reply was long enough for you 😝 Have a great Christmas Quent and of course a happy and successful New Year 2024. Cheers Quent. Garry & Ruby ❤️🐕

@@economicalrides Thanks Gary, I’ve reviewed your video on the installation of a battery trickler. It’s doerable but not much space and I’ll need to run the feeder between the battery panel door. We give it a go this week. Thanks for the tips. Next year’s European trip is pretty much locked in Milan ( including a trip to the Moto Guzzi factory) and then to Croatia for a couple few weeks (trains and planes, not bikes). We usually do a mid year trip to Asia, but I am not game to ride in those cities. May has seen things differently 30 years ago! Lol. We flew to Broken Hill in July this year. It’s in the outback and about 14 hours west of Sydney. I reckon Norman would be perfect for that trip, if there’s no rush. Fingers crossed you get the chance to review the new Himalayan as I am toying up a new bike in the new year. That said, the RE Shotgun has really caught my attention. All the best and looking forward to communicating more in the 2024! Quent

@@quentendawson81 Hi Quent, yeah, but it's pretty easy to feed the cable through the gap in the side panel without pinching it. The panel door has quite a large "panel gap" in it, it's not a precision fit by any means 😂You should be fine and it's one of the best mods you can do. Your battery will thank you for it ! Sounds like you do a lot of travelling there Quent, I'm quite envious but then again, I have everything I need right here ( well, that's what I tell myself and in all honesty, it's probably close to the truth ! ). The trip to the Guzzi factory sounds really interesting. Moto Guzzi is definitely a brand I could get into should I ever come into some excess money ( unlikely ! ). I love their classic looking bikes, with shaft drive too 👍🏻 Blimey, riding in the outback sounds brave but if you were to do it on any bike, I would imagine that the Himalayan would indeed be one of the best for the job. Nice and simple with a decent reputation for indestructibility ( which I will probably be testing at some point ! 😂 ). I have a remote possibility of taking Norman to Africa next year, some friends have invited me, but I'm not sure I can do it because of Ruby and probably mainly because I am a wuss 😝 I'm at the RE dealers in January for a service with Buddy and will be asking if they are getting a 452 in as a demo bike. Hopefully they will but they are quite stingy when it comes to bikes for people to try before they buy. But if they get one, they'll certainly be happy to let me have a go on it ! By the end of January I will let you all know if I will be getting access to try one 👍🏻 The Shotgun is intriguing. Initially I thought, what's the point of a cruiser which isn't actually a cruiser ? But having looked into it a bit deeper, it actually makes sense for a lot of people. Cruiser looks but neutral, "normal" riding position. Sportier handling because of the rake and wheel sizes. The standard foot peg position also makes it easy to stand on the pegs when going over harsh bumps ( something all cruisers are terrible for and cruisers generally have short shocks and harsh rear suspension ! ). So yes, I can see why there would be a market for it. My only caveat is that I WAY prefer a single to that parallel twin. The single just has more character, the RE 650 twin always feels a bit bland to me 🤷‍♂ Keep me up to date on what you decide and what you are up to in general Quent. It's always nice to hear what my viewers are up to ! Merry Christmas to you and yours and here's to some great rides in 2024 !!! 🥃🥃 Garry & Ruby
