Rowboat to Bass Boat Conversion, Part 2

I'm converting my aluminum rowboat into a decked out bass boat and learning how to do it as I go. In part two I work out some design issues and get started on the framing. I also test spray foam to see if it is water proof, I think you'll be surprise at the outcome.

From idea to reality is a constant measure twice cut once and then test fit and cut again. HaHa! Just finished my 16 foot Deep-V and the crux of the whole project was the engineering of the frame and storage. I’m 95% there still want to add some more storage without losing seating. Trying to keep it a multi- use boat both pleasure craft and fishing rig. Great series of vids. I came u with some similar designs while working my craft out.

As a former boat repair guy, I can testify that even 2 part foam eventually breaks down with moisture. The idea behind using foam is to occupy space as the weight of 1 cubic foot of foam is less than the weight of 1 cubic foot of water. Which is on average 2 lbs for Foam over the 62.5 lbs for Water, creating buoyancy. And the foam is to occupy space so water doesnt accumulate in an area, even if water logged, the foam will remain buoyant.

  • @EngineeredAngler

That is all correct. I'm using 2lb foam for most of the boat with some spray can foam which is has a much lower density.

If you make a styrofoam cutter with wire and car battery or boat battery it makes cutting foam so much easier and seals it as it cut they are super easy to make and well worth it.

For the bulkheads, did you somehow seal the cut edges of the foam before installing them? If so, how so? I’ve been pondering using foam and sheeting like that for a small casting platform so it’s cool seeing someone using different materials.

  • @EngineeredAngler

    @EngineeredAngler

No...I didn't seal the cut edges of the foam...Didn't seem necessary. This arrangement works really well for carrying a load in compression. If you need to span an area for a casting platform you'll need some other material for the surface you stand on...good luck.

Hi Marco, I know this is a year old video but I'm hoping you'll see this comment. What kind of adhesive did you wind up using after the carpet glue failed? Also, I saw where you said you're looking for a 4 hp outboard. I have an old 15hp Mariner two-stroke you can have if you'd like. It needs a new impeller which costs about 11 bucks, she'd make your boat scoot!

Hi, Nice build!!!! What about some pvc tubing for electrical wire chases? Always nice in case you want to add any additional electronics later. I am working on a WellCraft boat right now and it is a complete disaster. Getting wiring from the front of the boat to the console and to the rear is very difficult if not impossible in cases due to the way the wiring was installed in the boat. They put one pull cord from the console to the rear of the boat but the wiring was not in any conduit and when you tried to use the pull cord supplied the wiring being pulled just got caught up with the existing wiring and other construction debris utilized when building the boat. Also, the fuel tank is under the floor with NO large hatch access for tank removal or maintenance. John

Yes! Lack of access for wiring is a pet-peeve of mine. My Flycraft flats boat has good access from the center console to the stern but nothing going forward and no way to make it! I will definitely have both plumbing and conduit from stem to stern.

Cause it is my first boat ever I have to learn everything about maintenance, etc. A simple question, I build myself a lithium battery, 4 cells 12 v, bms, etc. From battery can I run a set of 4 cables, "2 +", "2 -", one set for my electric motor, Minn Kota edge 45 lb, another set for a couple of plugs? I mean is it safe to run more than 2 cables from a single battery? Thanks

That framing looks good . I don't think the test your using is the right one, I think you should be using starting mass versus ending mass. I have seen a number of boats taken apart that had foam that was saturated with water. Something that seems to be been successful is using Ping-Pong balls for floatation. Not a mess to use and if you ever need to open it up its a very easy clean-up.

  • @EngineeredAngler

That will be the next test. First I want to see if it allows water to seep...if not...then I'll take it and weigh it. then I will set it out in the sun and weigh it daily until there is no change in weight from the day before...I cut my teeth on materials research in fact I designed a similar test for testing the permeability of concrete. But, you are right on with your observation. Thank you for your input and keep watching.

@@johnjacob6774 I have seen them used before, there's no perfect solution it is a fairly common thing to use. One of the issues is that foam used on boats will over time take in water and reduce buoyance. I don't recall the article I saw it in but I saw an article where someone got the OK from I think US Coastguard to use them. Yes your right about ripping a whole in the hull but since your filling between the members you are not likely to have a lot come out unless your boat is ripped in half. Also if you need to redo it once its likely that the foam has failed and you spent a ton of time cleaning out the old foam unlike the balls that you can scoop out and rewash if you need to do work on your boat later.

Her name is Alumina with the accent on the "i". As you know that's word play with the Spanish word for illuminates and the word aluminum. That's just the kind of dumb s##t I do. I thought about coating the inside of the hull but coating aluminum is tricky. Since most of the hull will have expansion foam, I plan to scuff up the metal with sand paper and let the foam grab on.

awesome build... but that foam does take on water, it does take exposure to water (uv does't help) for a couple of years. also if you any cut to the surface it will take on water. even the marine grade foam will take on water after time if you break the surface and in an aluminum boat in our area it can lead to long term problems. if you get dead leaves in you boat and the foam stays wet against the bare aluminum you can get pin holes from galvanic corrosion because of the weak acid solution the the tannic acid from the leaves... it might take 5 to 10 years or more, but i can/dose happen. so to stop that, i first coated the inside of the hull in a bedliner before any expanding foam. also the only time i use that flexy seal junk is when i have to cut the foam, and it is just to reseal the cells of the foam (you could use a number of paints or sealers for this but flexy seal seems to really work in this one application). you seem like a guy that wants stuff to be made to last so figured i'd drop this little advice from another local like minded fishermen, and fabricator. p.s. cutting out my 2 part spray gun parts with my cnc router right now!

I know what your saying about the foam and water absorption...it would really suck if it happened. But I have an issue with information not backed by tests. When I pulled the original Styrofoam blocks out of the boat, one of them was notably heavier and had taken on about a pint of water. But after 58 years in the boat and the last 14 in the water tied to my dock I would say, you can't expect anything more. The sad truth is that all materials degrade over time. If that piece of foam in the PVC tube with 4 inches of hydro-static pressure does not allow water to get through it in the next few weeks ...that is as good as you can expect. remember I cut the "skin" off the foam before I put water on it. Also, the boat would have to be near sinking to have 4 inches of water over the foam. Of coarse if in a couple of weeks I find that the foam in saturated...then I'll be eating these words. Either way I'll be learning something... Thank you so much for your input and interest.

@@EngineeredAngler oh I totally get the need for testing... i have rebuilt my old sea nymph twice now. the 1st time was about 15yrs ago and all the expanding foam out of those cans had failed where there happen to be water. Also the real marine foam was taking on water if i had cut into it. Also I use ridge a lot in my art making. The Extruded Polystyrene sheet (the pink or blue depending on brand) is a lot easier to use/cut and gules up great. You should remove the plastic film off before gluing, but I was thinking it's the plastic sheet you used that isn't allowing the glue to bond. I have used the same plastic sheet top my gluing tables (because nothing sticks to it other than stuff like pvc cement/acrylic glue).I am sure there is something that will work that doesn't damage the foam as well, and looking forward to how you solve that problem and all the other things that come up when rebuilding an old boat.

The glue I used really is not meant for non-porous surfaces, of course that's exactly what I used it on. I only noticed it after the fact. I think the foam core idea is still valuable and I plan to use it on the inside walls of the open hatches (where I'm not using a tough box). But I will use 1 inch foam board and probably the blue stuff...it holds up to the propellant in the spray contact glue. I did find that the coefficient of heat expansion of the plastic sheets is high enough that you can't have all sides restrained. The bulkheads are actually pretty nice. I was planning to use a series of them throughout the hull but they take up too much room. Thanks again for your advice, definitely will consider how I will get my flotation.

It looks good but from experience that spray glue stuff ounce trying to fill a large volume doesn’t cure without access to air I made a diy mooring buoy filling a ball with that foam and it sat in the water and barely floats because the inside never cured, use foam sheeting or a expandable foam with a catalyst
