Rowboat to Bass Boat Conversion, Part 3

In part 3 of my bass boat conversion I deal with a potentially project ending issue and move on to get some deck framing done. I rebuild the transom with aluminum I salvaged from the boat seats. And we move a bit closer to painting the aluminum hull.

    This project is moving along slowly, but I'm solving the major problems with the hull condition, hull drainage, plumbing and electrical in ways that are satisfying to me and make this worth my time. The custom live-well is coming out really nicely. I'm so glad I didn't take the easy way and use a plastic storage box. The biggest problem in front of me now is time. I work a full time job as an engineer and that means more than a 40 hour week...I'm grateful to be working though! I'm working on improving the sound and image quality but, that will probably be slow too....

    What's happening? This doesn't have anything to do with the boat build but nice going with it so far!. I just had an idea for a good new episode for you to brainstorm with. How about a show about clear coat testing, kinda like KBS vs Epoxy Resins, 5 minute epoxy vs 24 hour - vs UV clears. Maybe use the Rockwell hardness measurement chart to see how each material can hold up and resist indentations and just general rock dragging crankbait fishing to see which holds up the best. Just an idea. I'm really curious along with probably hundreds more! To see which is the best KBS or Epoxy clear! Just an idea. Pretty sure this would get lots of attention and views trust me on this one!

    Man so far this thing is looking great. I can tell you’ve put a lot of thought into the design which is the most important thing before you even get started. I can’t wait to see it finished. I just bought a little 12 foot V hull today. So I’m gonna do something like this soon. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

    Thanks...I have been really enjoying the boat for the last couple of years. Sorry to say that the EVA deck material is already spent . I might go to carpet when I replace it.

    Great videos! But one suggestion, pick up a lapel mic that either works with your camera or a $20 corded one that can plug into your phone so you can record great audio and sync it up in video editing later. Have to crank the volume up, then get blasted with sound when something happens closer to the mic.

    Cool idea. Small boat. Hope your not fishing anything much bigger than a still pond. I can't help to think that's a lot of work to put in for the limited places you will be able to use it because of it's very small size.

    No argument there...boat will be mostly in small lakes and, on occasion, saltwater creeks. Thanks for watching.

    Like the project and the progress you are making. I was wondering if you have any concerns regarding your vertical supports rubbing on the aluminum floor when the boat flexes in the water. Maybe you have clearance between the bottom and the support, I don’t see any flat support between the floor and support to spread the load and cushion the friction on movement.

    That is actually a good point, here's why I'm not worried (assuming you're talking about the small tabs that are supporting the forward angle cross beam for the cockpit floor, attached to the bulkhead) I worked out the expected loads and that wont be a problem, the possibility of them moving around and damaging the hull is nearly zero since they are wedged in there pretty firmly. In addition they will be encased in 2 lb density foam, the foam has some pretty impressive adhesion strength and will bond the hull to the tabs, to the beam, to the bulkhead, and to the deck. Thank you for watching.

    Big project and your doing a great job finding hidden solutions to each problem that comes up and I admire that. Have you ever used Flex Paste? I’ve seen this advertised but never used it myself, yet. When I saw it advertised on tv I was thinking it may work in place of the clay when your creating the 1st half of a silicone lure mold but now wondering if it would work better than caulk on this project? Just a thought....thanks for the videos. I really like that band saw also!!!

    Yes I have...I considered it but, its not much cheaper and the 3M 5200 stuff is pretty bullet proof.

  • @leeadams5941
    @leeadams59412 жыл бұрын

    Interesting, I never would have used liquid nails, instead 3M 5200 In any application exposed or possibly exposed to water that stuff can't be beaten for adherence, waterproofing, and longevity.

    5200 sets way too slow for my taste. I use it on my salt water boat and anywhere where it will show on either boat.

    I have a 12' Sears Gamefisher alumiumn boat, I'm getting ready to try(TRY being the key word) to do the same thing because it's is really unstable. I have the same style seats so I'll use your framing ideas, I was curious, the drainage to the back of the boat with the floor ribs, You are going to have to have 1-1 1/2 inchs of water in the bottom before the water moves over the ribs to the back billage area Do you have any plans for 3/4' PVC style drain tubes in the through the floor ribs? I'll be waiting for the next video in the series, great job. What is the projected additional weigh add to the boat any clue?

  • @EngineeredAngler

    The water will drain down the middle where I'm leaving a channel. The original stiffening ribs have a small weep hole at mid-ship.. so far I have added about 45 pounds. The real weight will come from the deck and live well and all the added hardware. Thanks for watching.

    If that’s treated plywood against the bare aluminum, consider the aluminum gone. Probably at a most inconvenient time, just sayin !!!

  • @EngineeredAngler

    @EngineeredAngler

    The ply wood is a treated ply designed for use on roofs on the coast. That means they use a different kind of treatment that doesn't have the really aggressive copper salts so it can be used with aluminum flashing and trim. I'm more worried that is will rot and I'll have to take all that transom work apart. Only time will tell.
