Rosetta: The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone
Join Gary Kent as he follows archaeologists and linguists as they decode this strange inscription and reveal the secrets of ancient Egypt.
The Nile flows 6,700 kilometres from its source in Equatorial Africa to the Mediterranean Sea, covering one tenth of the earth’s circumference, and passing through nine countries. Its length is almost twice that of Australia’s Murray/Darling River System and 400km longer than America’s Mississippi River.
Today, as for thousands of years, the central fact of life for the Egyptian people is this river, the Nile. The ancient Greek historian, Herodotus, rightly said that ‘Egypt is the gift of the Nile.’ Without the Nile, there would be no Egypt as we know it! You see, the land of Egypt is 96% desert. Less than 4% of its total land area is productive. All the rest is dry, barren desert.
From the air it can be clearly seen that the only productive land in all of Egypt is found along the banks of the Nile River. Egypt has no forests. Rain is almost unknown. Egypt is a very dry place, and its only reliable source of water is the Nile. Egypt is about one-seventh the size of Australia and has a population of over 100 million. 97% of them live on less than 4% of the land which means along the banks of the Nile. Effectively, Egypt is no wider than the Nile valley. Beyond the Valley, there is nothing but sand. And so, for thousands of years, the whole economy of Egypt was dependent upon this great river.
To the ancient Egyptians, this river was the source of life, and civilisation began along its banks. Great religions were born here - even the Bible story. Its first writer, Moses, was plucked from the waters of the Nile as an infant and reared by an Egyptian princess. This mighty river enters southern Egypt and flows past the magnificent monuments of Abu Simbel, the majestic temples of Luxor, the fabled Valley of the Kings with its 64 royal tombs, and the enormous pyramids of Giza.
Finally, it makes a wide sweep past the little town of Rosetta, also known as Rashid, and ends its journey at the Mediterranean Sea.
Now, it was here at Rosetta, near the mouth of the Nile that an amazing discovery was made - one of archaeology’s greatest finds of all time. Here’s how it happened. Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt in 1798. Accompanying his army was a team of 175 French scientists and artists. They were to map the land and study the mysterious monuments of Egypt. Strange hieroglyphic picture-writing on the temple walls and monuments looked down on Napoleon’s men.
This fascinating picture-writing can be seen today etched everywhere on the huge columns and blocks of stone. Yet, not a person in Egypt, or in all the world for that matter, could read these strange inscriptions.
In fact, for 15 centuries the knowledge of this writing was lost to civilisation. Men had gazed fascinated upon Egyptian hieroglyphs without understanding their meaning. The ancient Egyptians were a mystery because no one could read their hieroglyphic writing. But in 1799 one of Napoleon’s officers, Captain Pierre Bouchard, was supervising the restoration of Fort Rosetta on the banks of the Nile Delta. As he was digging a trench, he came upon an unusual stone- just over a metre high, three-quarters of a metre wide, and weighing 762kgs - with inscriptions engraved on it.
Together we’ll listen to civilisations long dead speak with thunder tones to our generation! And there may even be a message from the past, for you and me.

Not a fan of your sneak attempt to promote the Bible as being 100% true. Rather than someone like you, I far, far trust the Israel Antiquities Authority, who does actual research and admits when things in their holy book are found to not have any supporting evidence. For example, the Canaanites and Israelites were shown to be from the same linked group, supported by DNA evidence. Something your Bible does not show at all.

Me too. I was actionally kind of disappointed of how they tried so 'very subtle' to evolve the Rosetta Stone into a huuuge Biblical thing instead... And then nothing about that the bible was written in the aftermaths of a very dominant civilization as the Egyptians, to make it more legit. Not clever. But well done actionally, and not hard to understand that extremely religious people would embrace this.

The Rosetta stone is the center piece of the film that he uses to make his arguement for the bible. Decoding the stone allows him to confirm stories etched in stone, that also match the bible. Like footntes for the bible.

I wanna start with I'm Christian but lived 35 years as atheists/agnost. But the bible was written after all this right. So I agree it's not the "proof" he says it is. It does dit together nice tho

..words "discovery" is abstract. Champollion found it on an Island named Rashid, 'Sage'. The French named the Stone Rosetta.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video and it is well done. I wish the producers had taken less liberties with the connections with the Bible. Standing alone the story of the Rosetta Stone is an amazing one of discovery and I agree it is one of the great archaeological discoveries. However, the biblical association are, in some cases a stretch. For example, the discussion about Hatsheput being Moses' adopted mother is not necessarily correct. There are some scholars that believe she was but not many. More importantly, there is no correlating evidence that Thutmose III tried to wipe her memory away after she died. In fact, Hatsheput made Thutmose III the commander of all Egypt's armies prior to her dying and him becoming pharaoh. Many scholars believe to wipe her memory was by the priests who did not want history to remember a woman who was a great and successful pharaoh. There is insufficient evidence to make any conclusions but thankfully enough history survived despite the efforts so we know about this remarkable woman today.

I know what you're saying but this is a Bible based channel. There are countless resources on the Rosetta Stone and ancient Egypt that don't reference Biblical text. So I'm thankful that we have this video to help people see that there are extra-biblical sources that validate Biblical scripture.... Especially because today there are MANY people that claim nothing in scripture can be proven at all.

I believe the ancient Bible and I appreciate the effort made by the author to this channel and I think that this program that was interested in the Pharaonic language was published only about two years ago The strange thing is that archaeologists have tried to explore gas pyramids 200 years ago and they have explained that the inscriptions on the graves and on the walls of the tombs and on all the rocks that they used to tell the biography of the kings of the pharaohs in all the years that they ruled and did not talk about the Bible
Some people are still living in disbelief...
I'm learning about the rosetta stone in history so now I can tell my Bible teacher that this is pairing up with our history class so why not play it

There are several copies of the Rosetta Stone which is at the Britain museum. I didn’t know there were in existence so all the facts can be verified.
I never heard or read a scientific research mention that the Pharaohs culture has any stories that confirm the Bible...

@Siba Hory There's a story in Egyptian hieroglyphs that tells of how a slave found favor with the pharoah and that eventually his family came to Egypt to co-habitate with the Egyptians, but they out numbered the Egyptians and when the King died who found favor with the foriegners, the new pharoah enslaved them for fear that they would come into power because their numbers were greater than that of the Egyptians.

God led me to this video at the perfect time. In our home school, we read the Bible daily and are currently studying the Book of Genesis. For English, we are reading To Kill a Mockingbird. At the beginning of chapter 8 in To Kill a Mockingbird, the Rosetta Stone is mentioned. We wanted to learn more about the Rosetta Stone and were led to your video. Through your documentary, we not only learned about the Rosetta Stone, we also learned about the Rosetta Stone's significance related to the history of the Bible. it was just a proclamation and laws. written in 3 languages so no distortion. we prolly should do that too. but yeah should have dived a little deeper. great presentation otherwise!

1/3/2024 After seeing this video, no one should dispute any of the "Old Testament" of the Bible, but still they continue to do so. Why is that? The same objectors have no trouble with Egyptian history, until it confirms the Biblical accounts, that match, Why is that? Additionally, if the "Tora" (Old Testament) is true, why not the "New Testament"? One day this all will end, one way or another. It is just sad that this disputes continue. ;-)

As a Jehovah Witness, our main job is to offer anyone a free Bible Study. Everyone needs to have the opportunity to come to know the creator of the universe, Jehovah God and his only begotten son Jesus Christ. It’s always nice to know that others know the Bible is authentic and accurate in all it says. 1Timothy 3:1-5 makes it very clear that we are living in the last days, “critical times hard to deal with”. It is of the upmost importance to understand the Bible and come to know its author. Thanks for this article.

Wrong! Deciphering hieroglyphs was started by British guy Thomas Young, who discovered that it was a phonetic language. The French dude picked it up and finished it. This video doesn’t give any credit to Young whose efforts enabled eventual completion of the work.

On the otherhand, if the hieroglyphs were not written based on the stories from the Old testament, then, we could say that may be the fact that these hieroglyohs exist suppport that the events depicted in the Old testament actually occured as real events.
