Rooftop Leadership | Scott Mann | TEDxSantaBarbara
"Trust is eroding all around us everyday. Conflict and skepticism fill the void.
In these challenging times, this former Green Beret explains how to lead people who don't want to be led."
Scott Mann is a former Army Special Forces officer who spent 23 years deployed to some of the most challenging and violent places on the planet. He is a master at building relationships in high-stakes, competitive environments. As a Green Beret in the United States Army, he forged bonds and solved problems using values that moved people around the world to stand up for themselves. His secret? He was able to restore trust and create human connections in places where that didn’t seem possible. He is now bringing those same principles to corporate boardrooms and conference rooms-where trusted leadership is more valuable-and more vulnerable-than ever.
Scott is a regular contributor to CNN, Fox News, Wall Street Journal Radio, and NPR.
Today he is a leadership speaker and trainer. He is also the author of the #1 international best-selling book Game Changers. Scott remains on a mission to teach organizations the same “game-changing” leadership strategies he learned in combat.

I'm sorry is the point of this talk really just about trust? Because... that seems so obvious. Don't get me wrong, Scott has obviously had some intense experiences that would have illuminated the importance of trust in a very impactful way but I would hope that the majority of people wouldn't need to go to war to understand this... maybe I've just been lucky in terms of my community but "trust is eroding all around us everyday" is not my reality

People often fear change, but also being undervalued and disrespected. People fear the pain of being overlooked for leadership roles and being disregarded as “not leadership material”.😎

thanks for sending to me!
I am often in awe of people who become specialised in the military. Not for me, but so grateful that it is a calling for others.
I will never fire a rifle in Afghanistan but I will give thanks for people like you, Scott, who have. Thank you for your service.
So amazing that just the presence gives empowerment to the locals. No expectation, just the support, gave people the courage they needed to protect themselves. What a unique perspective to leadership.

Rooftop leadership, oh yes that makes perfect sense. Thanks for telling the story to understand ourselves better! 💪💪
I have never heard such a well-spoken and charismatic speaker. His delivery is spot on. Truly amazing and touching talk.
This is real leadership in my eyes. Leading by example in such a real way.
I'm very glad Scott has this platform as an outlet for the trauma he has experienced.
If we lead with courage and transparency, those that care will always follow. That's how we know we are doing the right thing.
Lessons teach us and experience defines us, this man is proof of that!
Thank you for your service Scott, we are safer because of men and leaders like you.
Trust, you said it. That's amazing work to be proud of and humbled by.
Leading is more than running at the front, leading is often at the back supporting.... And Scott is a perfect example of this.

Impressed by how you connect military service to leadership! Nice talk.
Thank you Scott for all you have done and continue to do for this country and those who defend it
Oh my god, what he sees at the 17 minute mark had me in tears.
Definitely agree with Scott on this stuff, trust needs to be built in to the foundation of every successful relationship you build
Such a cheerful guy, I'd never guess that he is a military!
The physicality he gives to this presentation really connects something for me.
Regardless of what your beliefs about war are these people do an amazing job for their countries.
Thank you for your service, Scott.
a perspective i needed today. Thank you Scott.
To have come out of that with a perspective like Scott has is pretty amazing.
I hate to admit how mesmerised I was by this talk. I normally can't stand anything or anyone so steeped in militarism but this was beautiful.
Defending together. So impressive in the line of fire.
Wow! The fear alone. I have no words.
I've always heard the term "leading by example" but this is truly it. incredible.
Scott Mann is the MAN! His training is awesome and he is a true leader. Just finished a 48 hour Rooftop Leadership training course with Scott and I'm walking out with a new view on the world.

Thank you for sharing your experiences Scott, it can't be easy to relive this.

Scott is an amazing man and the work he does is so important in understanding so much of this
What a wonderful man, your experiences of trust and community are so powerful
Utterly inspiring
We often forget when we are thinking about management and leadership that, while there is plenty of information and research about how to be an effective leader, at the end of the day we are dealing with people. Personal interaction and engagement is invaluable.
Such an amazing talk Scott, my mind is awash with so many things I would never have otherwise thought of.
Strongly agree with what's being said here. Trust is a huge foundation in building rapport within ANY kind of relationship and something people are forgetting how to do
And now he saved over 500 people leading a secret operation in Kabul.. what a hero

I find it fascinating the length of time a war can continue, perhaps so long its the only thing they know how to do. Raised by the fight.
If we could all follow our " highest purpose and serve people we will never meet" what a better world it would be.
How incredible this guy is talking about his idea with a retrospective of his time in the army.
Yes it makes sense to break bread and be face to face in order to align with values and trust. The complexity of all this is pretty incredible.

So very true, I think it's engraved in our brains that sharing a meal is a time to find common ground.
Whether we realise it or not, fear is deep rooted in many people and when one of us is brave enough to lead the way it encourages those around us.
Fascinating talk, Scott.
I think I just saw your dad doing a TED talk, you are both amazing!

To lead you must first learn to follow. he has the right path to be at the front.
"connect at exactly the right spot, with precisely the right person" I know he's talking about something that's planned and coordinated but it made me think of so many moments where I met someone by chance and they turned out to be precisely the right person that I needed in my life at the time. Thank you for that reminder Scott.
Added to favorites - much to get from this one
Learning how to become a better leader, regardless of what comes your way. Good stuff.
I would think that Scott is an exception to the rule of what we see our service people as, or have been lead to believe. What a beautiful and thought provoking talk :)

Point of no return! I have been there! It is like the fight for your life starts because you have no other option. So much get done and there is so much innovation and life in those moments.
Such an intense presence.
Well done Scott for coming back and trying to transfer those skills into your civilian life.
Maybe I'm particularly emotional today but this talk had me in tears for so many moments. The part about finding courage when no one is following us in particular just... destroyed me in such an amazing way.
It's so true that people bond more quickly and strongly during intense situations like that, and the idea of always having that mentality is really interesting!

Leaving your tracks in this world- that really hit me. We so often feel the pressure to make an impact but this phrase just tops that… Leave track for others to follow, don’t build monuments for others to idolize.

I think all it takes is for one person to step outside what is being accepted to show everyone that they don't just have to go along with what's happening. This talk really validated that belief, Scott, thank you.
A bit off the war topic and with no malice, I have always loved that saying "nobody's getting out of here alive." It keeps the permanence of things in perspective.
What an intelligent and well rounded man. To have been through what he has been and to come out of it with the ability to be real and raw and honest. It's very refreshing to see! Brilliant man, awesome talk.

MDL- yes. I have had this feeling in big moments and choices in life. Once there is no going back, the uncertainty clears up.
I just went down such a rabbit hole with this guy and his talks. Just... wow. Such a life lived already and then to come home and navigate 'civilian' life so powerfully, to not give in to that despair... amazing.
Pretty incredible that Scott could come back and do what he's doing now. It takes a very strong character in my opinion to be able to move forward after experiencing such awfulness.

Scott seems like such an intelligent, empathetic and well rounded sort, I want to ask him if he still agrees with what is happening!
Thanks for explaining the difference between what Green Berets and Navy Seals do. I had no idea and am in awe of your skills and dedication.
I met some of the military men in my life. I can tell you they are the most disciplined people and their self-control is amazing. And the way they manage anything is just unbelievable. Seems they can do anything and they don't know the word can't.

Those in business and leadership need perspectives liked this to understand that it is human beings who they are leading and working with, however, this is a pretty intense way to be approaching business in a cushy western world.
Couldn't agree more, trust is absolutely crucial for any relationship! Be that in community forming or just interpersonally.. the more trust and rapport there is within something the easier it is to share information and understanding.
Really increased my understanding of how this all works. Thank you so much I couldn't even imagine what this would be like.
