I LOVE Gary Cooper + I love this film! Esp'ly on the ship and Coop says: "We need to see the captain." Merle says: "but why?" GC: "bc where I come from, when a man feels the way I do abt a woman, he marries her." Then he switches off the light...She turns it back on...He walks to the door...Then, she turns it off again...Perfect writing + acting! 💞

ok this just makes me feel infinitely sorry I wasn't born in his generation next to his house as his wife. that would be one really good dream.

It's Merle Oberon from The Cowboy and the Lady (1938). There are a few clips from that one in the video.

It's a shame that Gary Cooper is known primarily for his westerns and movies that he made when he was much older, such as High Noon, because you can see what a versatile leading man he was. He could be funny, sweet, sensitive, and charming and had a combination of innocence, vulnerability, and smoldering sex appeal that few of his peers had. I felt bad for his female co-stars because he completely dwarfed most of them and made them look older and less attractive. I think the only female co-stars who managed to look beautiful next to him were Jean Arthur, Ingrid Bergman, and Patricia Neal.
