Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV Wall of Fire | Reviewing Every U.S. Saturn Game | Episode 21 of 246

A legendary strategy war game based on ancient China is adding Sega Saturn to its long list of platforms. Will this prove the worth of next generation consoles, or will it make the SNES version look better? tHe AnSwEr MiGhT sUrPrIsE yOu.
Heads up, this was recorded with two different capture cards. My old one died in the middle of recording, so there will be a difference in quality with some clips. Sorry.
Special thanks to Pimpeaux for the release date info research help, and to the people of /r/threekingdoms for moral support. I love this series and plan to play it more. Might try a different port though...

Welcome to the series where I review every single Sega Saturn game released in North America by order of release date. I made a spreadsheet with all the games satakore.com has as American releases, listing them off by order of release date, including sources. All the games are narrowed down to the month they came out in the U.S.

This video was previously taken down by Chinese state media for use of content from the 90's Romance of the Three Kingdoms show. Months after re-uploading a slightly altered version of this episode, this original upload came back online. I will keep both uploads public in case the copyright overlords decide to make this video vanish again. I have no way to control this.

I played 9 on the PS2 years ago (around 2004) and enjoyed it. I think it was one of the first PAL releases in the series, I had never heard of it before. I don't think this Saturn entry made it to Europe.

_RO3K Retailing for 70$ in the mid 90s_ crazy how all games from now on are going to retail for that same price again. We never escaped the inevitability that game prices would go back to the way they were in the early 90s.

So small story about this game. I wanted Nobunaga’s Ambition on the Saturn so bad so I held out thinking it would be next. I just assumed Nobunaga’s Ambition was more popular and if a port of ROTTK then I knew Nobunaga was next. I was even a little hopeful for Aerobiz and maybe even a long shot with Liberty or Death. So I skipped this. I ended up forgetting about until PTOII got ported. Still I waited and waited and that’s how I ended up never playing a Koei Sim on the 5th Gen. I really did you format. Thanks for the reviews!

I appreciate how you actually take the time to learn games like these for this video series, even if they're not your usual cup 'o tea. Sinn0100 in a nutshell, yeah think of your typical Everdrive for cart based consoles but for optical drives, hence ODE (Optical Drive Emulator). For the Saturn you do have a fair amount of options on the market, the MODE from TerraOnion, Fenrir, Rhea/Phoebe and Satiator. All those using SD, USB or SATA drives to pull say a Redump ISO, mounts it, and functions as if you had the actual disc in the drive, with faster loading and preserving the older laser from further wear and tear.

Dream of the Red Chamber (I think that's the name) is another of the great Chinese novels that's probably the least well known. However, there is a whole field of scholarship around it called Redology, with people dedicating their lives to the story, I believe since it was never completely finished and the thirst for finding the ending has gone on long enough for it to be a whole field of study. No relevance to the video, just a fact I like to spread whenever the four great Chinese novels comes up.

Makes Mao Zonggong's insane and borderline demented fangirling over Liu Bei seem reserved(not really). XD I do love the book though. :P

Dynasty Warriors and Kessen! That's my experience with the Romance of The Three Kingdoms...I guess saga. I have always wanted to read it and maybe one day I will. Being truthful, I would rather play this game. I don't know how I missed out on playing this. I love Risk and most strategy games. When this game hit I was literally engrossed with the Xcom series. Which is still my favorite strategy game too this day. I just want to create an arson squad. I want my officers burning everything down every turn. Burn it all down. ;) Addendum- The extreme loading has me a bit worried. Perhaps when I pick this up I will emulate it. I don't know if you do that with your games but I'm really funny about running my older consoles. I don't think I have physical played my Model 1 PlayStation in over a year. I did however, mod the ever loving shit out of the PlayStation Mini and I have so many thumbdrives with games most of them have become toys for our new kitten. He loves his PlayStation games. Coincidentally, that is a beautiful Japanese Saturn!

I studied abroad there in 2015 and was pleasantly surprised by the great arcades and decently sized gaming communities there. Myself and a few classmates found a competitive Smash 4 scene with both expats and Shanghai locals. Console ban was recently lifted at that point and stores selling them kept popping up at around that time. Like any country, the government can have its own ways of being tricky, but the people I met there were outstanding. Would love to go back someday despite the recent political turmoil. I still have some of the arcade tokens I got there and somewhere in my drawer, the Initial D arcade machine cards I acquired there. Came back with plenty of non-gaming related items and memories too of course.
