I had a friend spin the "I'm a spy" in a whisper, in the semi dark, a week after we were joking about James Bond. I didn't laugh because: a) a slim possibility it was true (she did work for dept of defense in irregular positions & hours after all), and b) if she was lying (99% my instinct said so), then she was a sociopath and I best just ease out of it by not making a fuss, and getting away from her subtly but asap.

The documentary selects main information, highlights all the obvious ‘tells’, which would have been sandwiched between long periods of would have been perfectly ‘normal’ family life at the time, and compacts years into less than an hour, omitting the full context. Due to the documentary’s title, we also know ahead of watching that he’s a con artist. Mary would also have had no frame of reference regarding the life of a CIA operative. The whole point of a successful con is that the con artist cons everyone, not just their partners, but even those looking from the outside in and who might later ask, “But how could she have ‘let’ herself be taken in?” Otherwise, they would have been caught by public authorities right from the beginning.

At some point a woman needs to take responsibility for her actions. There are real victims out there, this woman was no victim. She CHOSE to keep taking back this man even when she admitted she had doubts about his stories. Am so sick of women who play victim when they don't get their way.

Anytime you hear someone saying something like working for FBI or CIA, it’s a huge red flag. Being cheated for six years is amazingly problematic! Although I feel sorry for Mary, I certainly don’t do with a man who’d asking for money 💵 for whatever the ‘decent‘ reason ever. I believe you don’t have to have a man in your life but yourself! Every red flag possible was frantically waving. I can understand falling for a cockamamie story, but to shred and burn documents to keep from the police is next level. Wow. Props to the first wife for contacting her, meeting up, and empathizing with her. I'm glad she finally woke up. Hopefully the kids are doing okay.

Made it halfway through. I give up! 🤣 This Woman had zero faith in herself, her instinct and intuition. She KNEW she was being toyed with. Yet, she still chose to hold TIGHTLY to the illusion. She was a victim, until he told her that bs story about being in the CIA. She knew, THEN, that it didn't add up. Everything after that, she participated in. There were so many times she could've walked away. Yet, she refused to listen to what her gut was telling her.

I hate people saying 'the benefits of the doubt.'' Ya!..Maybe in the law, before convict the person, make sure, he is the one. But when you are in doubt, listen to yourself and be smart!

I was talking with a man & we had one date but I felt that something was off. After knowing who he’s for five yrs it didn’t seem right that I didn’t know where he lives. He had been by my house a lot tho! I decided to pressure him about it & he got mad & tried to blame it on me, like I was too busy. He also told me that women play games lol. He was playing me & I was the honest one. Crazy how liars try to turn everything around to deflect their deception! I know how to handle a con so he ended up apologizing & he came up with more lies! He’s a cop so it’s not like he’s afraid of me lol. My sis checked him out & he’s married with kids. He has been lying by saying that he has no kids. I saw the red flags early on so I never got intimate with him.

I knew a sociopath/con artist like that. He told me that he never made friends with anyone unless they had something to give him. He had girlfriends all over the world. He even had a gay male friend in Hawaii who he spent the winters with. That friend financed his plane trip every year. Sociopaths have no conscience. They are devoid of feelings.

It was listed in Companies House under his name, so public information anyone could have found. Not very secretive! She could have asked the neighbours who lived there and gone to the Land Registry to find who owned the house.

This is not an unusual story. DON'T automatically trust people just because they are charming and good-looking .

Thank you for posting this today. I got involved with a money grabbing con artist like Mary it took a very long time to heal of denial and I'm still fighting off his manipulations. This movie really helped me.

She's not the brightest bulb. I mean how can you believe all of this?

Stop crawling into bed with men you barely know! All this could be avoided with some old fashioned dating and courtship. Judgement is clouded once you get between the sheets.

At the beginning of the segment she said with baby in hand, " it just didn't work out with him". In the Old days a baby was a by product of it working out.

I had a similar experience with a Sociopath. My con lasted five years; and he still hadn’t asked for money-yet. I had been to his house, met friends, lots of identity fraud involved. Turns out he used an alias, the house was a rental, and he had either paid or manipulated others to validate his identity. Including a sister. The entire relationship, from the beginning, was a con. It is hard to wrap your head around. All the family and stories he told me, his career, all of it-lies. He was a legitimate Sociopath. He is 57 years old now living in GA conning someone else. He will never stop-the con is the source of fuel for these types. Targets single mothers just like this a$$hole. They know no other way, born without a conscience.

I know my Dad was courted by the CIA because my stepfather worked at the same base my Dad was at. We've continuously asked & teased him, but to this day he has said NOTHING. Even to the point that he is retired & won't say a word. But he has taught his children, to always do our homework and check out the left, the middle, and the right more than once. To never follow blindly & to question authority. Always. So NO, the I work for the CIA is a huge NO.

Cannot believe a supposedly adult woman could fall for such obviously blatant BS. For goodness sake woman you have a child, put them first and wait until they are much older before you degrade yourself further.

I believe it is good for women and girls to hear these stories and learn what can happen. Listen to your gut and get away! I am glad Mary shares her story and helps educate others about these types of scoundrels - they are out there. I wish her and her children well.

Sometimes it’s hard to sympathize with a victim, and this is one of those instances. This woman is so incredibly gullible that the truth kept hitting her over the head and screaming in her face, and she just blithely believed what she wanted to believe. An extremely frustrating case.
