Roman you are such a beautiful skater and what a beautiful program. I can't wait for the day that you lay it all out there cleanly cause we know you are more than capable.

If Roman has outgrown or is getting into a rut with Tracey, that's not her fault. There IS such a thing as a collaboration no longer mutually benefitting two people, even if it once did. Saying he may need a new coach is not laying blame on the poor woman who can't control how her relationships with her athletes pan out over time. Realize there is nuance to what human beings imply.

Completely agree. A good coach might not work well for anyone. I had one who was quite strict and had good results with my peers, however, with me that was not the strategy as I internalize every negative feedback resulting in more anxiety and poor performance. So it's a difficult balance between the two personalities and styles of teaching and the athlete's poor performance might not have anything to do with the coach. The problem here might be that he's very comfortable with her since they have been together for many years and doesn't seem to desire to change. But maybe he needs someone who pushes him more, who can help with anxiety, and maybe take some accountability. In his YT videos, he seems always to look at failure with a "half-full glass" mentality, but in some cases, I think he needs to reevaluate things. The issue now is that he has lost any opportunity to compete again this season.

He is an artistic soul. That doesn't fit very well in a competitive world. And, I think that the war in Ukraine has to weigh heavily on his mind since his family is from Ukraine. How could it not?

What I want is for people to stop, blaming his shitty performances on his coaches.

People want very easy solutions like "new coaches!", "sports psychologists!" - the reality is while both of these can have meaningful and significant effects on performance but Romskys disasters are obviously not just a little anxiety or a need to settle yourself because you have too much adrenaline. An inconsistent but stunning competitor like Sasha Cohen is what you get with that issue (who still managed an Oly Silver!). Romsky's issue are so clearly just bad competitive mindset and that's not something with some simple fixes, if even fixes exist. i love him, he is a stunning skater, it's just clear that competition isn't for him and i don't think there is much to be done about it, sadly. I wish it were still the 90s/early 2000s with a serious North America show and pro-competition scene where we could just see him skate in all his gloriousness without the pressures he just isn't equipped to handle. I'm not shaming him for it but it's just so obvious this goes beyond the right coaches or needing a sports psychologists to do some little CBT tricks on him.

@@ASRIBEIRIO brilliant response. Those tropes are peddled by the likes of Dave Lease on The Skating Lesson who himself has been trying to learn a single Axel for years after working with 27 different coaches , not the least of which being victor Petrenko! If it were that easy , he would have. While his sal technique isn’t perfect, I can see that he understand the technique perfectly and what he’s trying to do. It’s just we may have to be OK with the fact that he’s never going to be a good competitor. The Sasha Cohen reference is apropos from the standpoint of being a good overall skater with the ability to invoke emotions and those that watch but the inability to control technique under pressure that you can do with your hands tied behind your back and practice.

@@Bnizzofashizzo The only thing I really hope is that these disastrous skaters are just a poor competitive mindset (some people it's not just for them) but instead isn't just the physical manifestation of deep pain in the way it was for Gracie Gold. The chirpy and cheery interviews after his disasters really do make me worry something more serious is being masked - I hope I'm wrong and I won't speculate about his mental health - but the whole thing feels really off. Gogolov was pissed off after his short, Romsky acted like just a little bump on the journey to success! Something is off, I hope it isn't serious like Gold, but it's way beyond the interventions of sports psychology or a more positive coach or whatever.

How is saying he needs a new coach blaming his coach? If he's outgrown his coach, that's not her fault. It's not anyone's fault. You make a silly assumption and come off radically aggressive for no reason. You ignorantly comprehend what people are getting at. He's literally too comfortable and stuck in a rut because his life is no different now than it has been for years now. Yet he's 23 years old. Not growing at that time in life is like death. A change in location, coaches, and rink will do him a hell of a lot of good, but he seems to think he can continue to skate like he did three years ago and continue to progress. It's just not possible.
