Had both. Sold the Rolex and my only watch is an SBDX017 now. The MM300 has its own history and lineage that goes all the way back to the same time frame when Rolex was working with the sub. Seiko was doing this in Japan as well. Not many other brands can say that. The MM300 is a true legend with its own story with no Rolex influence.

I own the SBDC033 Sumo and to me the ultimate watch to own would be the Marine Master 300 . Even if money wasn’t an issue I still think I’d buy the Marine Master. Not to say I wouldn’t want both the Rolex submariner and the Marine Master in my collection but I’d definitely purchase the Marine Master first because that watch is to me the ultimate grail watch for me .

Picking up my first SLA today. Its a021.Straight retail. They ordered it,but had a green MM300 and a red Seigaiha MM300 on site, and those are what got my attention. I was merely walking past and saw out the corner of my eye those 2 MM300 amongst those Turtles,Willards and Seiko 5s. And that's why I stopped in.

I'll be honest, I keep going back to a Seiko dive watch. Like I compare my 2017 JDM SPDC053 reissue to pretty much everything, and prefer it to 99% of dive watches at any price! Once you get into the 1000$ or so + range with Seiko, it's a different beast from your run-of-the-mill Samurais and Turtles, like even mine has a bit of Zaratsu polishing on it. Completely changed my opinion of the brand. That MM300 is next level, unfortunately I have tiny wrists.

Interesting take. I Would like to see a similar seiko or GS in the same price range as a sub for a more apples to apples comparison.in my opinion seiko passed Rolex and every other brand in terms of precision and accuracy and robustness as soon as they released spring drive. The case finishing is on par with Patek I have zaratsu watches and they are impressive and stunning the camera just can’t translate it, it’s fantastic considering it’s price hell if I was a professional diver and I had to pick something that isn’t quartz and has the best lume on the planet and has a full titanium option I’m going spring drive all day if My life depends on it m. With the games you have to play with Rolex just to get a watch at retail is off putting especially when you have to pay a ridiculous amount on the grey market knowing you can get a overall better watch at Half the price it’s a no brainer in terms of utility. Rolex makes boring tweaks every year (which I understand if it’s not broke…) they just aren’t as innovative anymore they’ve become a status symbol rather than to be the tool it originally was designed to be….enter Tudor lol on paper the only category Rolex beats it is in name recognition it has better lume, accuracy lightweight materials and has a great power reserve or power reserve meter the crown is oversized along with the bezel making it easier to grip underwater also the use of the more secure pin and caller vs screws although it may sacrifice aesthetically it’s form over function but consider it against a GS diver and or a LX which you could by two for the price of the sub that would be interesting

Beauty lies in the hand of the beholder. That being said, what makes SEIKO MM300 superior than ROLEX SUBMARINER you will have to analogously think of the two icons in terms a JAPANESE MADE TOYOTA LANDCRUISER vs a HAND ASSEMBLED Australian MERCEDES G WAGON. While the TOYOTA LANDCRUISER is big and beefy it ages really well. The G wagon however, does not. "Wabi-sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect." "Wabi' came to connote rustic simplicity, freshness or quietness, and can be applied to both natural and human-made objects as an expression of understated elegance. "

Past 60 and diving with trimix or multiple gasses and it gets really difficult. A whole bunch of divers still use their watch only, especially GUE divers. And saturation divers have no need for dive computers, for them it's just the convenience of having a watch while you work. The mm300 can perfectly fill the roll of a saturation diver's watch and a Rolex will just blow its crystal off during decompression.

Where are you sending it? £380 to service in the UK. OK its a Grand Seiko movement but servicing doesn't require Grand Seiko. Also 3 year service interval is to guarantee the gaskets at the dive rating not the movement, they service the movement anyway because of having to renew and retest the gaskets, 5 to 7 years is fine if you're not Saturation Diving, hell, I have an 18 year old SKX that's never been serviced and my son uses it for Scuba Diving and it keeps time within 10 s per day. Seiko movements can take a LOT more abuse than every Swiss movement I've owned, leave a Sub for 8 years without a service and see what happens. Besides, if servicing costs are an issue for you then you should buy the Grand Seiko SBGX335 which has the legendary 9F Quartz movement, aside from 8 year $100 battery changes the service interval is 50 years and you are getting the most advanced and accurate quartz movement ever made which takes atmospheric temperature 528 times a day and makes micro adjustments to the electronics to ensure the crystals are vibrating to the required hz. The crystals are grown by Grand Seiko who then test each for 3 months before selecting the very best for the watch, each watches electronics are then custom made to suit the spexific crystal to ensure optimisation. Hence the watch is accurate to 10 seconds a year.
