Master vs Master - Omega Seamaster vs Seiko Marinemaster

I'm asked on a regular basis how I would compare these two luxury divers. They are very different in feel as well as price point. In this video I go into specifics and try to illustrate the strengths of each and how they stack up to each other. Let me know what you think!

    I like the seamaster, but I don’t feel like it’s a timeless design. When I look at some of the 15 or 20 year old seamasters, they look dated. People are paying premium prices for Seiko reissues. I think the MM300 will hold up better over time.

    I dive and I've switched to full digital dive watches for accuracy and visibility. I have experience with the seiko and have a dive instructor who had the Omega. There is no way the Omega are even comparable. The Seiko is built for diving period. One piece design and an extending band with good lume. Put on a pair of dive gloves and get the watch wet with slimy west coast sea water and the omega dial won't turn. I know this from first hand experience. The seiko is a pure dive watch and not pretending to be anything else. The Omega is a sports watch. Display case back and a bezel thats hard to turn along with a crown that catches on velcro belts and small loops. The seamaster is made for people who like the look of a dive watch and like to take a watch into the shower or the swimming pool. Don't get me wrong Bruce I love the channel and enjoy your reviews but your way off on this one.

    We buy watches for what it does for us and how it tugs at our heart. Not what others think of our collection. I think Japanese watches are very underrated compared to the Swiss. Japanese have a history of building high quality affordable and tasteful products (Toyota and Lexus). I used to be a Swiss watch fanboy - Omega, Rolex, Tag, Breitling, etc. But after researching Seiko and Grand Seiko, I am really liking what Seiko and GS stands for.

Agree that the Omega takes it against the MM300, but given the price difference, the true competitor should be the Seiko LX SNR029 which is priced similar to the Omega. Mine too, but the variance is what kills it. For most of the time, my Seiko 6R15 could keep anywhere from 0.4s to 1s in either direction per day, my Tudor and Rolex around 1s. But other times of the year, depending on my activity or weather, or what have you, my Tudor and Rolex would be the same, my Seiko would go to -8s per day.

  • @pistolpete023

    @@rousseau327 the 8L35 has very low variance, i.e. high consistency. Meaning if you get a MM300 that is +6 a day, it's likely to remain +6 throughout the year. The 6r15 is several tiers below the 8L35, imo. If it's regulated, the 8L35 would basically be a Grand Seiko movement, high accuracy and low variance.

    imho: omega seamaster diver is the best money/quality watch today on the market. It will just perform better than ANY other diver on the market on a "rational" comparison. The only reason to pick a fifty fathoms, a marine master, a Lange Odysseus, a Submariner is because you like that specific look or history, and you care about that more than the features/finishing/performance.

  • @edteach3r

    @edteach3r

    Many superlatives here: “best”, “better than any”... Really? A ‘Swatch’ for $4000 + ? While I do like the movement, I don’t think everybody would agree with your ‘rational’ comparison. If you really like the Omega, just buy a used one at half the price.

  • @dariodeagostini5176

    @dariodeagostini5176

    @@edteach3r it is quite clear that we value different things. Omega is not "swatch" even if it is in the same group. Finishing and materials of the Seamaster are on top of the watches in the diver sub 10k bracket. Coaxial escapement, accuracy and overall mechanical build are top in the same segment. Those are facts, not opinions, and you can easily verify them through youtube reviews (if you rely on them) or simply by taking a loupe and inspecting the watch yourself. In addition to this, your reply is just a polemic one, in fact there is NO WAY you can find a seamaster at half retail price unless it's a fake. You can easily buy one new for 5k or less, the current 2nd market value is about 4k, slightly less for bad conditions. Is depreciation going to be an issue for omega? Yes, in fact it's an issue with ANY brand except the overvalued Rolex and Patek. The only "opinion" in comparing the seamaster 300m diver to other divers is about your preference in its design and style, almost any other scientific metric is on the favour of the omega. If you disagree, please provide counterproof.

    Void : Personally, I value Omega as a brand and was only questioning the superlatives you were assigning to a watch that is mass-produced. As a quick reference, I am looking at Chrono24 and Watchbox (verified dealers only) and there are a number available at 30-40% over new (including box and papers, cheaper without), and this is without looking very hard. I buy all my watches from my AD and they regularly have used Omega Seamasters (different models) for sale that offer significant discounts over new. I own a 1967 Seamaster (my dad’s watch) and it runs beautifully, and am currently looking at buying the calibre 321 Speedmaster. However, it is not the “best” watch, in my opinion.

I have owned both; the Seiko is terrific but for me it was just too similar to all of the other Seiko divers, albeit with a slightly higher quality apart from disappointingly low rent bracelet. Furthermore it's seriously way too to heavy. Just impossible too relax with. The Seamaster wore a lot better with it's better proportions and is a stunning and very individual looking piece with an epic movement. Handled both extensively. If you're not a titanium fan, the LX will seem too light. The watch is also very thick and compared to the mm300 wears truer to size due to larger dial and indices pushed to edge of dial. The bracelet and clasp are disappointing just like the sbga231. The crown is very chunky and will bite into your wrist (depending in how you wear it). The dial in my opinion also looks cheap and plasticky with the matte charcoal finish. In prefer the regular mm300. If the lx is supposed to be the pinnacle of prospex and spring drive, they should reduce thickness by 2mm, reduce crown size, improve bracelet and clasp and use a deep gloss dial for it to look the part. The smp300 has better bracelet, clasp, dial and wears better than the lx

    Seiko spring drives I have not had great luck with in GS watches, one of mine stopped moving within a year. GS didn’t cover it under warranty since GS stated it was in contact with an exterior magnet like an airport scanner. GS charged $880 to recharge the internal magnets on the watch and it took almost 3 months since it had to be sent to Japan. My GS spring drive chrono constantly ran fast about 10 seconds a day but GS claimed 1 second. GS also would not cover adjusting under warranty since the warranty states an guaranteed accuracy of plus or minus 10 seconds they just advertise plus or minus 1. While my Omega seamaster has been between plus 1.5-2 seconds daily and measured and my speedmaster is plus 4-4.5 seconds daily measured. So both are more accurate then my two spring drive movements. My A Lange Lange 1 beats both of them at less then 1 second a day measured even beats my two pateks which run 2-3 seconds over a day. My Seiko line watches are not spring drive just autos and my newest the Propex Alpinist is not very accurate at all but a great looking cheap watch at $750, it measures plus 10 seconds one day then minus 7 another, then minus 10, then minus 7 again, so far it’s all over the place but still nice looking for the price. I love the look of Seiko watches but their movement accuracy is only at the beginning and more hype then truth from my experience. Still amazing looking watches but movements are not at the level of many other brands out there unless you’re looking at their bargain or made in Japan but under a grand watches. Great finish on the watch and you really can’t expect COSC or DIN level movements at that price point no brand offers that under $2,000. I will say GS spring drive chrono watches have terrible resale value, so if you like them buy used since GS’s warranty covers almost nothing anyway.

    It's an optical illusion. The dial of the Seiko is smaller, but the case is a little wider (if I recall correctly; sold my Omega and kept my MM300 some time back) and much thicker. The size of the dial does so much for the perceived size of a watch, I've found.

    I don't know what Bruce has, My MM300's finish is noticeably nicer than my Omega's was (it's gone now while I still have my Seiko). From what I've read about the movements, the Seamaster has nothing on the Marinemaster in terms of design; in fact, the MM300's movement appears to be a more efficient design while, according to one watchmaker I talked to, the Omega's Coax is a throwback to a less efficient design used as a basis for no other reason than so Omega can say they have something Rolex doesn't. However, he also did say that the Omega had more attention put to its movement's assembly while the Seiko could stand being regulated.

    What a lot of people don't know, is many top-end watches do not give a crap about variance. APs have +7s from some users, same as Lange, etc. The mid-tier luxury watches (Rolex, Omega, Grand Seiko, etc.) is where people actually really care about accuracy.

    Old thread but just watching this video. I’ve had 2 Of the new Seamasters and loved the bling and waves on the dial, but hated the sharp edges of the case, the helium valve look on the wrist, and the non tapering bracelet. I avoided the Marinemaster because of all the reviews about it being too chunky. I have to say that that the Marinemaster is in a league of its own at half the price. If you can wear a Tudor GMT, you can wear the MM300. The bracelet is not as refined a the Omega but it works great, plus it’s a strap monster (great Strapcode options). The negative for me is that the date is too small. But who’s looking at the date while diving 😂

    Good comparison, but the scores need weighting - not sure 'box and extras' are equally important as 'quality!' That aside, these are two very good, but quite different watches. From my diver/owner perspective, the Seiko is a pro-level dive tool, the Omega a versatile luxury sports diver. The Seiko is more similar to the Planet Ocean or Sea-Dweller, the SMP to the Sub. I'd add that for diving, the Seiko has the better clasp: it doesn't matter if it's cheap pressed steel, it will clamp over a wetsuit or glove without removal and is very tough. Also, servicing is much cheaper on the Seiko and I'd say it's a more proven, reliable movement, that's easily regulated at service. I've got 4x 8L powered watches and 3 of them are more accurate than my 3x Omega CoAxials... But these are both nice watches, both are watches for life. For me, if Seiko improved the look of the bracelet (it's fine, functionally) and binned the Prospex logo, the Marinemaster would be at the level of a Sea-Dweller - that good.

    I especially like the DUST on the Omega dial which is easily seen on close ups starting at 1:42. I have never seen any on the 20 plus that I have owned but quality control is first to go when cranking out a product. I have had two large metal filings (1/2 mm) on a white dial Rolex that took 4 months to get in after ordered from their #1 retailer. It took another week to get that fixed and back to me from Rolex. I have only seen one piece of dust on one out of 120+ Seiko watches. Japanese culture frowns on needless imperfections.
