    For the life of me I can’t understand why every reviewer of this watch keeps mentioning the term “GMT”. Unless I have taken leave of all my senses (or simply retarded) the watch is NOT of the GMT variety. The additional hand is simply to indicate to the wearer whether it is am or pm. If we insist on using the term ‘GMT’ hand that is fine but rather misleading. At the end of the day, it ain’t that complicated.....set the actual time and then set the ‘GMT’ hand to the corresponding military time by using the bezel markers. For Instance, if it is 10:00am set the ‘GMT’ hand to the 5:00 position (or ‘10’ bezel marker). My comment is not meant as a critIcism to this specific reviewer, every review I have seen approaches the watch in the same manner. I just don’t understand why. Why in God’s name would you need a GMT function if you are spending a few days exploring a goddamn cave?

    @@PerthWAtch I wouldn't say it's perfect but it is a very nice watch that stays true to its heritage (albeit with a growth spurt) and offers something different in comparison to the other (imo garish) modern GMT models and the boring old sub. The polar version is my preference and as Christian correctly pointed out, the GMT was a bonus feature added in the 80s with its original purpose being a tool watch that offered maximum clarity when you needed it most, in a cave for example. For this reason the non rotating bezel doesn't bother me, it would confuse me if they introduced it as it would ruin this history of the watch. Also I've never been 100m underwater and if I was, I wouldn't be wearing a Rolex full stop. Finally, let's not forget, outside of your clickbait title you didn't at any point say in the video that it sucks 😉

    Thanks for the video. Recently got my explorer 2 polar. I would say Exp 2 is for a different audience and its the only sports Rolex that have the non rotating Stainless steel bezel, although Daytona once used to have it. All the famous grail watch have SS bezel; 5711 and AP 15202. It's just something that ceramic bezel cannot replace; the texture of the stainless steel on the bezel are an art just like the bracelet.

    I have one of these exactly like the one in the video... the brushed 904L has a white-silver shine that is hard to see in videos or pictures, but makes it a surprising piece when you see it in the wild. I love when people notice it because you see their eyes lock on and widen slightly... it's a surprise!

    Thought this watch was ugly when I first saw it, it has steadily grown on me - now I think its appearance is quirky and quite attractive in a no-nonsense, utilitarian manner which I guess is exactly as it is trying to be. And I love the black and orange contrast. I agree in that I think they should have gone all out and imbued it with 300m resistance and the sub glidelock clasp to make it truly a go anywhere explorer, in that instance I wouldn't hesitate to get one and sure many others would too. Quite a fair review that belies the hyperbolic thumbnail in my opinion. I also like that you make an effort to reply to all comments, more content creators should do that.

    Thanks for sharing those thoughts - Pretty sure that if they made it 300m and gave a glidelock the price would be at least $1k higher... likely even more... Yep, the thumbnail is indeed hyperbole. Glad you can get that... so many others don’t seem to understand the concept!

    The polar dial version of this was for many years my most desired watch. I still love it but as I've aged it's been surpassed by many including other Rolex models. I just personally don't see the value for what Rolex sell for (having said that I also never find myself going weak at the knees at the sight of "Swiss made" on a dial, so Rolex isn't alone in that). But like everything in life it's all about personal choice and personal opinions. Something I don't see the value in others will and vice versa

    I've outgrown Rolex. They are great for what they are, but EVERYONE has one or wants one. It's no longer special and too many douchebags wear Rolex. I don't want to wear the same watch every other dickhead is wearing. I own a few Rolex watches, I will keep them, but I don't wear them as much. Rolex got boring and basic thanks to demand and popularity. I will get the Polar late this year or if a new Polar comes out next year (Explorer II anniversary). It's the only true tool watch Rolex makes. Everything is Luxury Sport.

    I mean YOU can claim you can go anywhere with this. Almost all manufacturer recommendations are that 100m is ok for swimming but not scuba. I’ll believe the manufacture. YOU can claim this movement has paraflex over the GMT Master II, but that’s actually wrong. Cal 3285 also has paraflex. YOU can claim this has the same resistance as a Milgauss. Rolex doesn’t - no prizes for guessing who I’d believe ;)

    @@PerthWAtch This is true for all 100m WR watches, except for Rolex. Rolex 100m WR watches are water resistant to 100m. You can go scuba diving with them, though with a twin lock crown I'd probably stay above the recreational dive limit of 30m. If you want to go below that, I'd recommend a triplock crown model like the GMT-Master II or a Submariner. That same triplock crown is on the Sea-Dweller and the Deepsea which can go down to 1200m and 3900m, so it can handle the depth with two fingers in its nose. It's the crush depth that's different. The submariner was tested down to 1000m, and it was still waterproof. Only the caseback was crushed and destroyed the movement. The Submariner is a sturdier build than the Explorer or GMT-Master, the Sea-Dweller is a sturdier build than the Submariner, and the Deepsea is a sturdier build than the Sea-Dweller, but they use the same seals.

    This is a very nice watch and probably Rolex's clearest and most legible dial, especially in black. A good size and comfortable on wrist although the lugs could curve more to hug the wrist as could the bracelet if designed better, alla Longines conquest for example. The bezel can scratch much easier than a ceramic. The polished sides can also scuff very easily as the 904 is a softer compound although it is stated that it can be polished easily. My biggest pet hate is the taper on the bracelet. The oyster although well built, is a flat, old looking boring and bland style for starters and when it tapers to a child size clasp, it actually makes me sick. Does not matxh the case at all. However you can swap it for a Rubber B strap which looks fantastic.

    Thanks for your thoughts on this piece - I do agree it is perhaps one of their most legible dials of all. You're right in that the 904L steel does scratch more easily, so that bezel is not a great thing. Interesting point about the oyster bracelet taper... can't say it has bothered me but I get what you mean.

    @@PerthWAtch There are $40 watches with intricately designed case backs. I'm not that hung up on it, unless it provides something about it's history or legacy. I don't need a big Rolex crown on the case back, nor do I need an engraving of a mountain range to justify calling it an Explorer, or of a Kraken to justify calling it a Submariner, or of a helmet to justify calling it a Daytona. They could move some of the dial text to the case back, like they did with the Sea-Dweller. I don't need "Original Gas Escape Valve" written across the dial. Having it on the case back works fine for me. The only thing I like the case back to do (if anything), is show off the movement, but that would mean that Rolex needs to start finishing the movements, because the way they are now, I don't need to see them either.

    The is no rotating bezel because it is not a GMT, it clearly says Explorer II on the dial. The 24 hour bezel on this watch is intended to tell am from pm. And as you said yourself it is not a Submariner which is why it doesn't have the 300M water resistance. This is a wonderful time piece if you understand its purpose and history, perfect just the way it is. The small fraction of people in the world that might actually use the three time zones on a true GMT is probably just a little greater than the small fraction of people who would ever use this watch to explore caves and use the bezel as "intended". I'm sure as you can tell by now I own a 216570, and love it a little more every time I wear it.

    It not having something doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice to have it. I wouldn't mind seeing Rolex implement the Glide Lock clasp on every model. I also wouldn't mind seeing Rolex implement an exhibition case back with the high quality finish on the movements like they do on the platinum models now. Is it necessary? No. Rolex (despite what many people are saying nowadays) still mainly makes tool watches. Expensive tool watches, but still tool watches. Almost every model they make comes in stainless steel, and many also in precious metals to cater to those who want a bit more bling on their wrist. The ceramic bezels may be more glossy than the previous aluminum bezels, but those were implemented because they're longer lasting, making the watches even tougher than they were before.

    Thanks for the informative review. I've just purchased this watch for my first Rolex. I paid pretty much UK RRP for an absolutely mint unworn condition watch, originally sold in Japan in 2017. I have the new Omega Seamaster 300m which is a great watch and originally when I got the Explorer 2 I genuinely felt a little deflated I'm not exactly sure why. However over the last 2 weeks wearing the Explorer I have really grown to love it. The more I inspect it and gaze at it the more I am appreciating the build quality and the overall feel of the watch. I think my knee jerk deflated reaction was perhaps just the immediate first impression as the omega is a fantastic looking watch however the comfort of the oyster flex bracelet is just amazing. I think I made the right decision not to pay the £13.5k for the pepsi GMT master especially now I know the Explorer has pretty much the same movement and all that really differs is the rotating bezel. In summary the Explorer is a fantastic looking and functional watch. When I decide to water ski or free dive to over 100m I'll wear my Omega Seamaster. And the extra £5.5k is definitely better in my bank than on my wrist for now. Maybe I'll see what the Covid 19 situation does to the grey market prices over the next few months and get myself a Pepsi if the price drops to 10k. Cheers

    I'd like to debunk the 904L-myths that circulate. 904L is more corrosion resistant than 316L. It is not harder, but actually a little softer. It is not more difficult to machine, but you can't use tools for 316L to mill 904L. Because the market for tools to work 904L is far smaller, they are more expensive. That and only that is what makes 904L watches more expensive: the tools to machine it, and the fact that Rolex does it. Chinese fakes made of 904L steel exist and are, guess what, not really more expensive than other fakes. It can be done without the ridiculous markup if you want it, Rolex:) Price of raw 904L is only marginally higher than 316L and should not be reflected in something the size of a watch.

    Nice review. Definitely not something I would buy, too expensive. However, it is nice. Does not need the cyclops, the date changes once a day, really don’t know why it gets highlighted. I’m curious about these chronometer-rates watches. Are they able to maintain this accuracy over time? This one is running faster this it’s certified to run at. However, there is nothing wrong with +6. There are so many variables that affect accuracy. Is giving it such small parameters practical? Would be nice to have something on he caseback. I doubt Rolex will change. I’m completely lost on the price, especially if the accuracy rating is unrealistic.

    Thanks for the thoughts as always mate! Regarding the cyclops... I have been thinking about this and I wonder if it is because the typical buyer will have started to have presbyopia, hence needing the magnification to read the date! Re: accuracy... oh absolutely nothing wrong about +6spd... unless of course they watch is claimed to have +/-2spd. Then it's just... well, wrong! Accuracy of mechanical watches can deteriorate over time if not serviced, which may be the case here. But it is disappointing nonetheless.

  • @bloodymarvelous4790

    @bloodymarvelous4790

    2 ай бұрын

    @@PerthWAtch The cyclops came about when Mrs. Wildorf complained she had trouble reading the date on her watch. Since then every Rolex with a date complication received a cyclops lens (apart from the more extreme dive models like the Sea-Dweller and the Deepsea, which they couldn't apply either because the glue couldn't stand up to those pressures or the thickness of the crystals made the cyclops lenses ineffective). On mechanical watches, nothing is constant or eternal. They can lose accuracy over time due to magnetism, degrading lubrication, or the balance or regulator getting disturbed. The same goes for water resistance. The seals deteriorate over time, reducing the water resistance. It's recommended to have the water resistance checked every year to prevent water ingress when submerged.

But, would be disappointed if the make an upgrade in 2021. But let's be honest, even if you have the money to buy, very very very very few people will get to even touch one. What do you think? For me personally, I much prefer the 31xx movements over the 32xx movements, but that's because I'm OCD. If I move the crown clockwise, I want the hands to move clockwise. With the 32xx movements, the hands move counter-clockwise. My brain can't stand that.

    This purpose designed watch was never intended to have a rotating bezel. Hopefully it never will. Hopefully it will stay brushed stainless and fixed as it is. Solid case backs make perfect sense for Rolex if you think about it. Not that it wouldn't be nice to watch the Daytona do it's thing.

  • @PerthWAtch

    Indeed, it is purpose designed primarily for one thing: maximising company profits by not duplicating what the GMT Master already does (and does better). 904L steel bezel is a bitch given how easily it scratches. As for the case back, solid makes sense if the movement is ugly, which is the case with Rolex. But I wasn’t suggesting they make it display, more that they give us something nicely crafted (see Omega).

    Like the GMT-Master, the "GMT" hand was meant as a 24 hour hand. When the GMT-Master went the way of the dodo, and the GMT-Master II was introduced, it got an hour hand that you could set independently from the GMT hand. Rather than designing a new movement for the Explorer II, they just used the same movement they had for the GMT-Master II. The added bonus is that you can use the Explorer II as a GMT/travel watch. If you want the rotating bezel, you should get the GMT-Master II though. If the Explorer II had a rotating bezel, it would just be a GMT-Master II, so I don't get that criticism. If that's your reasoning, you should be equally upset the Submariner doesn't have a helium escape valve or can only go to 300m, when the Sea-Dweller can go down to 1200m. Another thing is that 100m water resistance means something different with Rolex than it does with other brands. 100m WR generally means you can go surface swimming with the watch. With a Rolex that means it's water resistant to 100m, and probably beyond that. You can go scuba diving with this watch and it will be perfectly fine (provided you regularly have the case checked for water resistance). The major selling point for this watch, for me, is the white dial. That sets it apart from other sports models in Rolex's lineup. You don't notice the cyclops lens that much because it's enlarging a white date wheel against a white dial. The contrasting black outlines on the hands and indices makes it supremely legible. Far better than the black dial in my humble opinion. The only thing I don't like is the case size. I wish they still had a 40mm version. The first time I laid eyes on Rolex watches I thought they were hideous, but I've come to appreciate them. My favorite being the 116600 Sea-Dweller. Other than the first 6 digit Sea-Dweller, my preference generally lies with the 5 digit models. I quite like the modern vintage Rolex watches, with my favorites being the 14060M Submariner, 16710 GMT-Master II Coke or Pepsi, and the 16570 Explorer II.

  • @PerthWAtch

    @PerthWAtch

    Ай бұрын

    The lack of a rotating bezel was mentioned along with a list of other things Rolex deliberately held back (trip-lock crown, glide-lock clasp, movement etc) to neuter this watch so they can justify marketing it alongside the GMT Master II. To isolate that comment is to miss the point. Rolex is the only brand that dares to say "waterproof". Essentially everybody else says "water resistant". Look it up - it's not the same thing. Also see comment about dynamic spikes in water pressure with sports which might kill some watches. I agree with your comment about the white dial... except that it's not the only sports model that has a white dial version. And thanks for sharing your thoughts about the 5-digit models often being more preferred.

    The peak of Rolex design occured in the 80s and 90s with the 5-digit references. Ever since the release of the 6-digit references it's been a continual downward spiral. Modern Rolexes with their giant cases, fat lugs, and shiny center links certainly get noticed, but it's the wrong type of attention. Nothing beats the understated elegance and graceful lines of the Rolex 5-digit references. The 16570 Polar is IMO one of the best Rolexes of any era. Awesome piece you have there. :)

    hi Ivan, how are you again, there? Not really much to say about Rolex in general. Rolex is Rolex. However, there is one thing that is very strange. Normally all the Rolex cyclops has 2.5 magnification, of course, including Exploror II. But this one that you are showing me only has x2 magnification. The owner changed to after-market crystal? for me, that was the first give-away that it looks kind of "fishy"....Ivan, can you double check that for me? thanks

    Meh stuff to like stuff to slag. The marketing is hilarious. A 24 hour bezel. Tell the time in all light conditions on your adventures. Whether in the twilight of a cave (yes, caving for days on end where you lose track of whether it’s night or day) or at the poles where the sun doesn’t set. That’s really handy. I’m always lost in caves for weeks at a time, or sledding across the pole. The orange against the black looks cool. The size is nice. The brushed steel is resilient to marks so it’s a good daily wearer. But the 24 hour business is lame as hell.

    I like the sterile case backs of a Rolex I'm saving to buy a Rolex and for me the blank case back means I can have something engraved on the back when I finally get one as with a lot of people they buy a watch like that to mark an important time in their life or an important achievement and it's nice to be able to have the back engraved I'm never going to have to worry about reselling mine when I get it it's going to be passed down and stay in my family that's my opinion

  • @PerthWAtch

    I get the idea of the engraving... it’s just that so many others give a nice stamped case back with great design, and Rolex pretty much never do that, just stick with their plain backs. Not even giving it as an option to have designed back vs plain back.

He’s also probably wary of all the Rolex nutters who will become hysterical if he’s too critical of a Rolex. I however have no such concerns. Just look at it! It manages to be boring and ugly at the same time. An ideal watch for a man with more money than taste (or sense?). If you disagree - ask a woman what she thinks of the watch, and tell her the price. See how you feel about your Rolex then.
