We filmed at the Rolex HQ in Geneva the first time in April, when we presented you the brands novelties 2021. I am sure you watched these 4K-videos yet. Unfortunately, we couldn't show you all the novelties at that time and we had to film watches without movements. Why? Some of the watches weren't released yet and therefore not shown to us and no watches with movements were available.
Last week, September 1st, we came back to Geneva and we now filmed them all! In 4K! Full functioning, including the Rolex 32xx & 4130 calibres…

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Explorer II

The Explorer II is a tool-watch, in “Oystersteel”, it was created for explorers and now features a redesigned case and bracelet. The update to the 50th anniversary brings enhanced visual balance and harmony to the timepiece while remaining true to its aesthetic heritage.
On the white lacquer dial, the hour markers - whose black coating is applied using PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) - and the black lacquer hour, minute and seconds hands stand out for their matt finish. The 24-hour hand retains its characteristic orange hue, which is the same color as the Explorer II inscription that has featured on the dial since 2011.
The new-generation Explorer II also benefits from an optimized “Chromalight” display. In dark conditions, the intensity of the blue glow emitted by the hour markers and hands now lasts longer thanks to the innovative and exclusive luminescent material with which they are filled or coated. In daylight, these display elements also have a brighter white hue.
The “Oyster bracelet” on this new watch features the Rolex-designed and -patented “Oysterlock” folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It is also equipped with the “Easylink” comfort extension link, developed by the brand, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. In addition, a concealed attachment system ensures seamless visual continuity between the bracelet and case.
The new-generation Explorer II is equipped with the calibre 3285, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2018 and is fitted on this model from 2021. At the forefront of watchmaking technology, this self-winding mechanical movement led to the filing of several patents, and offers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability.
Calibre 3285 incorporates the “Chronergy escapement” patented by Rolex, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, it is also insensitive to magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with an optimized blue “Parachrom” hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy that makes it up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. The blue “Parachrom” hairspring is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is fitted on the Rolex-designed and -patented high-performance “Paraflex” shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. Calibre 3285 is equipped with a self-winding module via a “Perpetual” rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3285 extends to approximately 70 hours.
Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Explorer II is covered by the “Superlative Chronometer” certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day - the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) for official certification of the movement alone.

I have the 21xxxx polar dial. It was my first Rolex. I love it still. Beautiful large and clear dial with date and especially the GMT hand. It has everything you need and looks amazing on the wrist as you have demonstrated.

My patience paid off! Over a year of waiting and finally have the Polar model. It's a spectacular watch - really stands out in person. I never handled the prior generation, but have to say that I really enjoy the matte hands & indexes - just superb contrast & legibility. The subtle tweaks to the case and bracelet give a more proportional look imo too. Excellent job for the 50th anniversary!

I own the white one 50th years anniversary "polar" dial. Got after not so long in Abu Dhabi Rolex AD and paid the retali price. Is my watch, for work as a pilot (I prefer this to the GMT master II) and is more "me", as I love travelling and exploration, especially in the north and on the mountains. I cannot be more happy with this incredible watch.

I have the “Polar” Explorer II 226570 50th anniversary model. I put my name down at my local AD at the end of April and took delivery on 15th of July. Such an amazing watch. I feel this is so underrated for what it is especially since it shares the same movement as the Pepsi GMT. Glad it’s not as hyped as this is such an amazing watch and pops in white. Best Rolex you can get in my personal opinion.

Excellent review Alexander. I have been looking at this daily for a few weeks now. The polar looks stunning. The black dial has grown on me a little but I think the polar is superb. The white is really nice but it’s off compared to black in contrast. It’s when you put it on your wrist. The white doesn’t contrast to your skin as nice as the black. So I think the white would stand out nicer on darker skin

Dear Alexander, great video as always. The best thing of the Rolex Line Up in steel watches concerning Explorer and Submariner: no polished links at the bracelet. My taste: Either all links polished or all links brushed - no mix. The mix of polish and brush makes the watch for me looking somehow cheap - cannot help it. Greetings from Germany. P.S.: Explorer I in 36 in steel is my favorite model.

I confess I bought one of the polar 226570 watches at an elevated price SIMPLY because I wanted a 2021 model that was the 50th anniversary release year of the explorer 2. I only shop the gray market otherwise if the watch I want is a discontinued model. Which, though a technicality I suppose a 2021 anniversary date watch still fits in that category. I love your passion for these timepieces. I can hear it in your voice as you present them to us.

“Explorer” watches are not as sought after as others, so you shouldn’t wait to long… unless your AD starts to fool you and wants you to play one of his stupid games … Remember Rolex manufactures >1.000.000 (most likely 1.200.000) watches per year and ADs get deliveries EACH month… There is NO shortage! Keep us posted please ….
excellent review as always and been tossing between Explorer II vs Omega Speedster 57" 2022 version (of which I also been checking your review thoroughly as well) and just the other day, got the call from an AD for the Polar version of Explorer II - let's just say I could not be happier to have such an exquisite timepiece and a pure tool watch on my wrist!

@@WatchAdvisor The 226570 has been on my wrist a couple of days now and I have to say it is really great. Wears very good, sleek and the updates on lugs and bracelet makes the watch so much more comfortable than the previous ref. I could not be happier and in my opinion this is the best Rolex ref in their lineup apart from YM42, but thats a whole different kinda watch in WG and more than 3 times the price. Got a sub and a datejust 41 earlier and this one is way better.

Because I feel like the video is bias towards the white dial, allow me to clarify the differences in the new dial with the black dial version: There is now anti reflectant coating on the bottom of the crystal, giving it a much sharper look. The dial is now glossy black instead of matte. The mercedes hand is slightly larger, more chromalite lume than old model, the white gold hands are no longer painted black allowing them to shimmer more in person. Rolex logo is bolder and all writing is bolder and brighter orange color as well. Might as well also menton the bezel. The font is bolder than previous. The Black one is better looking than the white but i like them both for different reasons.

Congrats Alexander, great video aligns deity your high standard. Just a clarification: hands on latest black dial version are now in silver colour, sometimes in your video those appear like the previous (in black). Am I wrong? As always Alexander - very very good review. I agreed with you … this is very much the only Rolex tool watch available in their offering. The GMT Master ii is too loud and blinky… hard to decided between the 2 colors but I went for the black (previous version) but I got to see the white one few weeks ago and legibility is impressive… maybe I will go for it ☺️

A beautiful watch. i have the 2012, 216570 polar. my first rolex. sold my Tudor watch and omega seamaster to get it. definitely no regrets!

This polar is the best. Even more confortable than my sub 114060. It’s absolutely awesome and wears like a 40-41 mm. Much better than the 40mm … have checked both and it’s the winner winner chicken dinner 🤘try in person and wait and see!!

Excellent video. Your knowledge and passion comes through. I like the polar dial best. To me, the Explorer 2 is the perfect watch for every day, and especially for travel. The Explorer 2 embodies optimal simplicity and elegance in a tool watch. I’m not a fan of the GMT Master variants, which cases appear taller than they are, and the bezel options are too flashy for my tastes. I’m going to get on the list for a new Explorer 2. I’m very patient and not willing to throw my money to a flipper for the sake of expediting. Thanks for the fabulous video!

Thanks for the other video about the Rolex “game”. I was too stubborn to believe it, but I do now. 8 months passed and I feel like I’ve learned a lot about the Rolex business, and watches as well. As I wrote previously, I had my name added to “the list” at my local AD (Mayors in Sarasota Florida). My wife and I made monthly visits to chat with the sales person, and talk about life events that were coming, hoping this relationship building would lead to a retail purchase. Nope. The AD never gave any indication that my chances were improving. She did try to sell me on some previously owned pieces, at higher markups than the grey market. Lol. In the meantime I had read much about how the 32xx movement was problematic, with a clearly documented amplitude, and ultimately a time keeping problem, which Rolex still fails to acknowledge or have a remedy. So with my new eyes, and a realization of my dim prospects of buying at retail, I went to a fine reseller, paid the premium (less than Mayors previously owned price), and walked out with an unworn 3187 caliber Explorer II Polar 216570. I’m happy as the retail price continues to climb, and will likely surpass the price I paid on the grey market in my lifetime, the watch has a reliable movement that I don’t have to worry about, and I have my watch NOW. Like a child that learned there’s no Santa Claus, I’m disappointed and angry with the Rolex AD game, but peacefully thankful that the AD didn’t sell me what I wanted, which turns out to be a watch with a defective movement. Sorry to all those that are waiting, or have waited for a new 32xx series movement watch. Do your homework and you’ll see you’re aimlessly floating down a river, heading towards a waterfall of disappointment.
I have the 216570 and I'm not unhappy that they stuck to the design. It might be a good idea as an affirmative move for the design in the Rolex lineup.

I Have the new model (polar ) since 10th June this year !!! I had no buying history in the AD and only wait 2 months since the launch of the 50th anniversary models of Rolex 7th of April ☺️ it’s a great watch!!! Ja, die hat das Zeug dazu eine echte Familienuhr zu werden... die Explorer II ist nicht so gefragt wie andere Modelle... eine vernünftige Wartezeit ist somit eher gegeben...

Love the orange details and the contrast makes it legibility unbeatable. I payed exactly what’s on Rolex’s page, directly from the AD here in Costa Rica. I would choose white! But end of the day you have to decide… If you can compare them 1:1 on your wrist in different light conditions and then let your heart decide. It won’t lie!

I've got the 2021 Exp II polar dial and to be honest I can't tell a difference in the lume from my 41mm Sub or 39mm Explorer. But the contrast with the white dial does give you really good readability in low light. I like to wear a watch to bed. Early in the morning the hands on the Sub will be hard to read, but on the polar Exp II they are a lot more visible. I went with the polar because I have enough black dialed watches already!

The official list price is 8100 CHF and NOT 10.000 CHF! Where are you based? Is it due to higher taxes? Or, who is that greedy AD asking more than the official list price?

@@WatchAdvisor I'm leaving in Persion Gulf (Bahrain),,, Our VAT is not much, only 5% of total amount, 10000 cost is including VAT. Our AD called modern art studio,. They sale 124300 silver Dial on 7561CHF including VAT ,.

Love both of these! It's a hard decision. Both dials are very ledgeable. 🤔 White dial seems to be more popular and probably the one to get but I like the black too.

Great video as always Alexander. Not a big fan of the polished case sides on this watch but other than that it's a fantastic watch. So glad they didn't put a ceramic bezel on this as many had predicted/ wished. Have put my name on the list for a white dial version....hope to take delivery in around 18 months (at list price!)!

Same thoughts here! Ceramic would have literally destroyed that cool & eternal design… I have seen to many ceramic inlay in bezels recently… prefer aluminum and/or massive steel ones… much cooler and relaxed… Thanks for sharing our passion! Keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Please do a full review on the Datejust 36 Palm Motif :) domed bezel with oyster, and fluted bezel with jubilee!

Hi Alex, greetings from the UK, great review thank you. 👍🇬🇧 Just a couple of minor points… the matt black finish on the hands, indices, etc are a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating, not lacquered. Plus the non-polished areas on the bracelet and case are usually referred to as satin brushed finish, rather than matt. Not trying to pedantic. Keep up the good work. 😀

@@WatchAdvisor I am starting to like the Explorer II now, after watching your video. Was always worried about changing the date on my Sub and would only do it after setting the time to 6 o'clock am. Is this necessary or just a myth? Thanks for your guidance!
Thank you Alexander. I like the new proportion of the bracelet and lug now. It looks more refine. Excellent advice toward the end of the video. People can help stop this nonsense of buying way above retail and view the lavish lifestyle of gray market owners.

Thank you for the review Alexander. By far best available review for that watch. I will go for the polar, such a beautiful watch!! Detail question: you mention AR is now on the inside. Date cyclops however show a blue hue which is often an indication for AR on both sides. Can you confirm the cyclops have two-sided AR? I'm asking because the cyclops area has been prone to scratches.

@@thorstenmichl6983 The Cyclops are anti reflective treated on both sides - yes! The sapphire crystal only on the inner side… I just got the confirmation!

Just purchased a brand new polar for USD 15.5k ie at 1.6x retail. Waited for over two years but no AD could offer it at retail. It was my grail so absolutely delighted with it. Stunning watch. Just wish if I had got it at retail price or if I should have been more patient ?

To support that artificial created, greedy business probably was no good idea in fact, but on the other hand side I understand that you did it... You should no longer worry about it and just enjoy your Rolex! It may always show you happy seconds, minutes and hours...
Nice review, I overlooked the explorer II. However, now the price is 9000CHF, 11% more in 1 year!! Which common person on the planet gets a 11% salary increase in a year? This is madness and greed. I am already 1 year in wait list for a gmt black&blue at the only AD in Zurich area that has still not closed all lists. Very upsetting.

I live in the time zone of Paris. CEST or zone time here is UTC + 2 … A time zone is an area where you have a zone time… so a watch showing a time zone is nonsense, the watch always show a zone time…

I like the Explorer II but I already have an old titanium Omega long discontinued GMT that I really love so can't justify another. If I didn't have it and was choosing one of these models it would be the white dial like my GMT. Interestingly my Omega (pre METAS but co-axial) also has the hour hand jump at the crown 1st position that works the same as the Explorer II and applied lumed blue markers and hands for super at a glance readability. If I did want to purchase one I would not go gray market.

Only if you can set the hours independently, without stopping the movement, it is a real GMT… all other solutions are gimmick watches you rather not buy…

@@WatchAdvisor My GMT Aqua Terra at the first crown position changes the hour but the seconds continue to run, the same as my Globemaster METAS master chronometer now also discontinued. A great function that I miss on the SM300M.

The Explorer is easier to get than other Rolex models… you should try and be a little patient… I am sure you can get one…

@@WatchAdvisor I might add something else that your audience might appreciate. GMT master 2... Feels like a heavy watch. 116713. Sea Dweller... feels like a heavy watch too. Tool watches we can agree. The Explorer 2 feels like a jewel on your wrist. It is perfection.

If your AD is honest and does NOT fool you this Explorer II should be available very soon… so be aware, smart and don’t beliefe what your AD might tell you concerning waiting times…

This is not a watch that so many have an eye on ... INMHO it is THE tool watch of Rolex and not a show-off-watch as many others are ... ADs get deliveries EVRERY month... an Explorer II with white dial should be available in less than three months... Keep us posted please...
A 2 yr old Rolex Polar Exp2 offered to me at an AD in December 2019 with original papers, box and guarantee for £5K. I said no because I hadn’t finished Xmas shopping for the family. Now it is worth more than kidnappers would ask for safe return of my family 😂

@@WatchAdvisor I panicked at the thought that a 20 yr dream was within reach, but could not justify it at the time. Now I see prices have recently gone through the roof and I regret it a little bit. However, I would have ended up behaving like an investor and never wear the watch rather than wear it and enjoy. I’m no wheeler dealing asset hunter, so any Rolex I get would be for life, and for the family heirloom.

Well I personally don’t think so… my wrist is 17 cm and I would not hesitate to wear the Explorer II… If you can, try it on your wrist… Honest Rolex ADs will have one “not for sale/for demonstration only/blablabla” 😆 so you can at least check the size and wearability… keep us posted please…

The orange colored hand is showing you a second zone time that can be set individually...
just got my 226570 today in blackdial .. incase anybody with smaller wrist need to know if that fit.. im with 6.5" wrist and it fit just perfectly..

I was on the wait list for 2 years now for Explorer II, yea before this latest ref was even released. Still nothing. Then I saw people going out of the AD with a couple watches, likely a split with the AD under the table happen when they flip the watches for profit
