Man when I get out of the military with my contract I’m gonna buy an explorer 2 with a white dial

This is my watch. I've had it for five years and many, many others have come and gone, but my trusty E2 is always there. I love the darn thing. And at 47, I'm glad everything on the dial is a bit larger. Makes it very easy to read. Thanks for a great video on the best watch ever made!

That line between Orange and Black on the GMT hand is appalling, really poor QC. It really is true what folks are saying about Rolex ATM, if you are selling all you make why bother with QC.

@@07cars No, this is reference 216570. The newest reference does not have the shadow hands or matte dial, amongst some other changes.

Yeah the GMT hand is awfully finished. I did enjoy both dial variants of the 16570 and 216570 over the years because they kept the tool watch essence of what Rolex once was. If you don't put the brand on a pedestal they can be enjoyed like any other. The problem is 'buying for an investment' and then not wearing or enjoying them as a watch should be. Take the stickers off, get it scratched - nothing stays perfect forever and neither should your watch!

For the money this costs i'd really like the finishing on the hands to be better.

@@joninawhitecoat just watched the justonemorewatch review you mentioned, that's absolutely criminal from Rolex!! Not a big fan of them anyway but that takes the p*ss big time.

It’s amazing how a company like Rolex can make the same looking watch over and over with slight variations and people go nuts.

People that can afford things look for value not just an expensive price tag. Rolex has lost some value propositions with their crazy prices. I chose BMW over Mercedes exactly for that

The Explorer II, my old man's watch, is also my favourite Rolex.

Those macro shots do not do Rolex any favors. The GMT hand finishing at 6:01 is shameful for a $9k watch.

I have a Explorer Polar and its amazing timepiece! Understated and beautiful! And that white dial really shines.

the QC is horrible, imagine paying more than 5k for a watch with finishing worse than some Chinese watches

Literally every fake I see online in macro videos these days has finishing miles ahead of anything I see actually coming out of Rolex's mass production facilities. This would be pathetic at 1/8th the asking price!

A little prep before photography, with a lens brush, or an extra-soft toothbrush would dig out most of that clutter around that cyclops... it's " gunky" looking. Previous owner's skin dust. Ew.

I love my Polar II. GMT is a must for me. Wears like a feather too. And it's ultra elegant.

I am somewhat surprise how appalled people are with the poor quality of the hands on this Rolex, this is not unusual when you put Rolex under the microscope. Rolex quality is what you expect in a luxury watch, those who expect more should not be buying a luxury band rather buy haute horology if you want pedigree and craftsmanship.

After seeing the messy colour transition on the 24hr hand, I had to check equivalent hand on my 1990s GMT Master. I was relieved to see that the end of the red part of the hand is perfect, so what happened?

6:53 i wonder if the GMT hand is supposed to be longer than the seconds hand like that? looks like a mistake to me, but who knows...

The finishing of the paint on ALL the hands is very poor for what I would expect on a Rolex. If I were picking up one tomorrow I would take a loupe and give it a thorough looking over before I walked out the store.

Wow. Rolex quality control isn’t what it used to be.

The explorer looks so much cooler than the Sub.. No offence to the sub.. Sub is king in its own right, but I am sold for the looks of the explorer.

I own a polar dial 216570. I find myself often just staring at the finish quality. It wears great and feels so solid. Even down to the safety clasp. Such a beautiful watch, love it!

Does the bezel rotate? I like noon at the top of the dial/ midnight at the bottom of a 24 hr.

Polar explorer is one of my faves. It is more tool watch retro, the original heart and soul of Rolex.

The interesting part about this watch is that the images of this 216570 is misleading online. It’s in person and on the wrist where you you really get the sense of how beautiful it really is. I went in thinking I was going to walk out with a Batman or Pepsi GMT but this guy with this black dial won me over in store. I’m glad not many are buying it, not because of what it will do to it’s resale value, but because it’ll be rarer to see someone wearing one 20-30 years from now like I intend to do from here on out. My favorite watch I’ve purchased by far.

Marvin S couldn’t agree more. Explorer II is the last real Rolex sports watch. No bling and all function. The complainers are people disappointed it doesn’t look more like the hyped models.

enamel at that scale is very difficult to apply, most enameled hands of even the most detailed manufacturers end up like that, not visible with the naked eye, you need a 50X lens to notice.

I have one of theses and just love it ..

I have a WAIT-MASTER, Superlative chronometer, the reference among all those who wait.

I hate how they've ruined the hands with black paint in the black dial version, the hands look way better in the white dial versions.

I wish Watchfinder was available in the UK

A compare of Explorer 2 with Sinn U2 would be more interesting!

I have to believe that it was too little, too late. The 2011 Explorer II should have been a leap into the future, a vehicle for Rolex to drive into the new era, making other watch brands envious, and making customers question the sanity but idolizing the chances and risks taken with such new craftsmanship and design. I think Rolex dropped the ball when it should have been flying over the goal line.

I sold a Speedmaster to fund the white version. No regrets whatsoever. I absolutely love it and it is not as popular as a Sub or a GMT Master II.

Does anyone know the name of the background music?

It's the only Rolex model that interests me and we'll see how daring they are next year with the 50th anniversary Explorer 2. Radical change, or a nod to the 1971 original?

The way the brushed steel bezel catches the light in combination with the polished surfaces is amazing. I get more compliments wearing it than any other watch I have worn. It looks amazing from any angle and never seems too tool-like or too blingy, I could wear it anywhere (Until they throw me out!).

I adore my black 216570. It feels a true Rolex, more than a Sub feels a Roles. A Sub feels like a sub and less of a Rolex. Even the poor finish of the orange GMT screams handmade quality. To me it is more of a purposeful signed fail rather than a QC issue.

Keeping my five digit ref black dial Submariner and the only Rolex I’d ad the my collection is the Yachtmaster but I doubt that I will. My Sub keeps me happy so far as my dress diver but the Yachtmaster platinum and light blue second hand is very tempting. This watch makes me appreciate the Tudor Black Bay Steel on bracelet even more. I might add that into my mix.

Never understood the black dialed Exp II. The polar, any way, is much more interesting, in my view.

I love it! I have a hommage to an older Explorer version, the Steinhart Vintage GMT I honestly dont understand why people would want this with a white dial. The contrast of the orange GMT hand on the black is just stunning.

Rolex either needs to stop painting hands, or paint them entirely. Every time there is a transition from paint to polished steel, or paint from different colours, it is a sorry mess. This can be seen on the GMT Master's as much as on the Explorer II's. Shameful.

The black paint spillage on the orange hand is unacceptable at this super high price point. Deal breaker. That’s all I would see. I love the polar white dial a lot.

Rolex II 2165x is the most polivalent Rolex, so far. I love the white one.

So if it's supposed to be a non-luxury tool piece, why is it 9000 to 23,000 dollars?

A chunk of steel with large numbers on the bezel and some orange paint. A design project that started in the morning and was finalized at lunch.

Why is there a antique camera on the table?

No much inspiration coming from the watch world these days. Relentless marketing with little heart, it seems... But there does seem to be a race of industrial design in stainless steel watches. Cartier, VC and Lange have all gone into exceptional bracelets with some giving easily adjustable clasp expansions or easily removable links and of course easily removable bracelets to swap with proprietary straps... That would make a good video! The Santos, Overseas and Odysseus are great candidates to challenge the Rolex oyster bracelet even including the glide lock clasp. Features not really available on the Royal Oak and Nautilus, does that meant they’re being complacent and could fall behind?

I do like the previous explorer more though.

Exactly, playing it safe isn't going to fly forever.

This presentation has more than just a hint of what used to be called a shaggy dog story. Some may say that this fitting, since the design changes are of no consequence.

I’ve commented on this before and either people don’t believe me or they’ve never tried one on. The bottom of the case is not beveled at all. In fact it’s very sharp and as a result it digs into your wrist. I wear my watches on the right wrist so the crown is facing towards my forearm. If you wear this watch, the bracelet has to be tight enough so that it doesn’t slide down your wrist. If it does that sharp edge of the case will dig into your skin and you won’t like how it feels. At this price point they should have smoothed that out a bit. In contrast, my Datejust 41mm on the jubilee bracelet is very comfortable. It just fits perfectly. Like the comments below that paint transition on the GMT hand is atrocious, absolutely unacceptable. If you’re going to buy this watch (I almost did) just make sure you wear it around the store for a minute to see if you like the way it wears. After five minutes on my wrist, despite the fact that I love the way it looks, I decided against it just based on the fact that it just didn’t wear well on my 7.5” wrist.
