Hey, this is Charles from the video. As you might know by what I typically play, I don't usually run Thassa's Oracle or Demonic Consultation in my decks. Do I like Thoracle/Consult in my cEDH games? Why actually--you might be surprised--yes, I do. The joy of playing competitively doesn't come from *what* I or anyone else is playing, but by *how* it is being played. I occasionally pop in here to write about the thought process behind the plays, not the cards. While the "ending" might feel "bland" for some of you, I think there's still a lot of exciting things to think about and observe--like the multiple Force of Will battles in Game 1 (and Don's decision to use tutor to preemptively find interaction instead of a win con), and my inability to draw anything relevant outside of Sanctifier even with all the Esper Sentinel triggers not being paid; or Ashani's Ad Naus to find interaction and a win later that game; or how impactful the Wheel of Fortune was in giving Drake the winning hand, and how I deliberately fed Don cards to his Rhystic Study so he could find something. There's a lot to say about what could have been countered, why it was countered, and when to have countered it--for example, in game 2, Don could have countered the Cabal Rit with his Spell Pierce instead of the Ad Naus from Drake and potentially stop a quick game-ending turn. Would that have been the right play given what he knew of the board state and number of cards in hand? These are questions that always interest me. These are the thoughts that go into what makes cEDH "competitive." I understand, however, that in "EDH," a lot of how it is touted, presented, and expressed is through the "spicy" brews. People want to see powerful, old, and expensive Magic cards get played on this channel. I implore you all to understand, however, that is only one part of the cEDH equation. The existence of the most eminent threats like Thoracle, Dockside, and Ad Naus creates and builds upon the games you've all seen this past year. Why attack the player who is running Black in their deck? Why play Torpor Orb? Why run Null Rod? Next spicy tech you'll see might be someone playing Titania's Song (if you don't know what that is, look it up--hint: it's not a White card, but I bet you'll think it's a spicy Stax piece). But *why* even consider Titania's Song? The point of all this is because cards like Thoracle, Dockside, and Naus create that meta and present players problems from which an opportunity arises for them to find interesting and innovative answers. It would *not* be cEDH if we weren't thinking about the hyper-lethal A+Bs like Thoracle, so why be surprised when someone shows up at the table with it? These are my two cents. Drake and Ashani piloted well. Give props to them. I'm happy to see Drake get a W. It's probably not released yet, but we've got another spicy video of Drake Epic Demonic Consult. I like this video, I hope you guys too.

I believe there is a difference between playing cEDH and watching cEDH. When playing cEDH, I don't care what finishers anybody runs. However, when watching cEDH as content, it feels disheartening to see Thoracle after Thoracle finish. Even if logically speaking the journey, thus the whole rest of the game, is different, the emotional part of my brain will instinctively brush it off as "just another boring Thoracle finish."

@Charles, it's not really that you don't play oracle/consult or breach or dockside, etc. There's plenty of other interesting cedh wincons with kinnan, zirda, malcolm/glinthorn, anje etc. The fact that you basically only play mono-white (or sometimes boros) is kinda boring because it's all stax and combat beats. By all means play spicy brews, preferablely in other colors. Even mono white can be interesting with teshar or oswald.

Redblasts are thing in obv red, so are RoL effects in white or Endurance-type effects in green. Yes blue still has the most options to interact with oracle but to me its always part of the challenge to tech your decks to your local meta. I see the problem more at the speed of which oracle is executable, expecially with AdNaus. FastMana is a bitch. Anyhow, interaction should still be cheaper than fast mana so at least when people come to a pod with good fastmana these players also have the good (free) interaction. It's a little more powerful than other options, but at least it resolves quickly so we get two games. When it comes to Ad Naus, I don't see the difference between LED/Bomberman or Brain Freeze/Breach combos. Anything after resolving Naus is practically flavor text. With that being said, Naus is still fun to watch. It's not unbeatable. It gets hit by practically every counterspell run in cEDH, even Dispel, and often requires additional setup cards like Dark Ritual, meaning having cards to turbo it out in addition to protection is hard.

Can you guys ban thoracle and breach from your games for a bit so we can actually get some more interesting gameplay?

If the only part of the games you find interesting is the very end you may not like cEDH as much as you think you do 😉

cEDH is about doing what it takes to win, no point in watering it down. Some of us (I hope most) come here to see a showcase of the best decks and strategies

@@DrakeSasser Over half of the game plays out the same, cast ad naus, get thoracle combo or play breach, win game, you sound like the type of cedh player every complains about, trying to tell people what they do and don't like lmao

Old school EDH player here... I am a deck builder and really enjoy the process... I guess I sudo get why cEDH is "fun", but to me it's 99% the same cards/win cons/net decks (with a few cards swapped)... I mean how much fun is someone playing a game winning card on turn 4. Or wait for it... wait..... He gets stopped with a..... counter spell.... Yawn... At our table we ban all cards that say lose or win the game, makes the game so much more interesting...

Thassa's Oracle is the worst card in this format. Such an un-creative deck building win condition at this point. Anyone who plays it should be ashamed of themselves.

Competitive EDH players should be ashamed of playing the most competitive, efficient win condition? What are joke. People playing competitively aren't going to be "more creative", because that means not playing the best they can.
